Just install him Runes of magic, its free, its actually very good when u get some levels in, and it looks good.. For a free to play mmo with shop if you want its actually a good effort..
Better than others ive tried..

get a 10 day trial account , then move over to the blizzard test realm when they are up, you can play for free on them.

Why play free clones that are shitty, when you can play WOW for free? At least with this you get the excellent art that Blizzard provides.

Shaders does not make art and style, which WoW has plenty of. I don't like the gameplay, but I certainly find the world and art beautiful, and I will still find it beautiful 20 years in the future. |

WOTLK.
They're supposed to upgrade the gfx slightly more in Cataclysm as well. Only thing that actually stood out in the screenshots for me was the new water.

You can make a trial account without credit card, I did more than one. I bought a classic wow key and a 60 days key and used it in one of that trial accounts, I played full 90 days (classic include 30 days)
I NEVER used credit cards at all, I can recharge 60 more days whatever I want with another key. My account is inactive right now, but still there.
Some links (for trial) ask for credit card, and others don't, but don't ask me, I lost all that links.

Well, account creation (whether it's for full or for trial account) does ask for credit card details.
However!
It doesn't actually check if those details are valid, so you can use practically anything, as long as it's in valid format. Just use any of these
http://www.darkcoding.net/credit-card-numbers/
and you are good to go. Worked for me all times (I had several trial and three full accounts).

You have a point there, if I had viewed some videos of this game I could have known it wasn't my cup of tea.
But I was desperately looking for another MMO when GW losts its charm for me.

If he's just to fool around a bit any server will probably do. If he likes it and wants to keep playing for more than a couple of weeks though, you might want to consider getting him set up with a proper account to give him at least a fair shot at enjoying the endgame and connecting with other players. On top of that, any RL-friends he may have who also play WoW are, I would assume, likely to play on legit servers.

Uhm, that makes no sense. WoW looks like a rotten burger, has an addictive drug inside it that many players get hooked and and in the end is as empty as an old rusty tin can.

My account has not any credit card info at all, indeed, I don't have any credit card right now, just a debit one and never use it. I buy everything with cash or doing bank transactions via internet (I am a little paranoid about using cards, I am not from USA)
I used a link for a promo Blizzard did about the trial, no credit card asked. I also created another account for Europe servers without credit card too. Google it, create account without credit card; I insist, I am not sure if this is still possible, or if will be in the future.
