Quote:
Triggered by technology giant IBM, Sword Art Online: The Beginning is an upcoming virtual reality (VR) MMORPG which will be tested in a secret location in Tokyo from 18 March to 20 March. Only 208 applicants will be selected for this project, and I expect Sword Art Online fans to flood the registration page.

Quote:
IBM will use a cognitive system, known as IBM Watson, which “uses natural language processing and machine learning to reveal insights from large amounts of unstructured data.”
Also in the fray is SoftLayer, IBM’s cloud computing subsidiary which will most probably host the massive virtual reality world of Sword Art Online. Hopefully this is a full-fledged project, and not just a technical test.

So Much Win Frap Frap Guy

The future really is near.

Depending on how this will end up, this will take MMO games to a next level of entertainment.

They have a hard time coming up with entertaining mechanics these days so I don't see what VR would add to already bland or grindy Asian MMO's. Razz

The whole problem with SAO is: It's written by someone who doesn't have a fkn clue about MMOs the author just researched the genre a bit and then made some shit up he thought was fun this works mostlyfine for the novels or even the Anime but i can't see them making a game from it that will be actually fun to play this will just be a gimmicky VR tech demo riding on a popular license.
Btw the trailer is a total joke mostly scenes from the Anime some buzzwords and unfinished assets just great...

I kinda like Log Horizon since the author is an old Everquest veteran and played a lot of other MMOs as well he knows his shit and it shows.

So what is it then? Sword Art Online: The Beginning is a 20 minute VR marketing demo. It is a neat marketing stunt for both IBM Watson and the Sword Art Online anime/manga/movie. It is not a game or an MMO, or anything that has legs beyond being a promotional vehicle.

ugh what a shit anime and i guess light novel series

i mean maybe if they were just regular guys gaining grinding levels

but no, self insert loser's fantasy hero kirito is a cool sleek dressed in all black trench coat wearing secret high level dude because he played the beta or something and is thus better than all the other players and gets the girls and wins the universe

so he spends his time romancing women who he knows are women because of the convenient "ohohoho i will now make it so everyone here will show up as themselves and not their toons" which eliminated any potential plots concerning a who dun it <spoiler />

it really just makes it obvious that the author just wanted to ensure that his fantasy self wasn't banging an ugly girl or a dude

accel world is way better even if it's just the same shit really. dunno about the novels, but as far as the anime goes, yeah, way better because they get fancy suits and it's a proper trying to get strong thing

Only now i read it.
Man, that sucks. And now the next step for MMOs is again far away.

I am still interested how this demo looks with the two technologies from IBM.
