With PC Games getting bigger and bigger and even these "repack" releases now going over 50GB, do you people see a revival of the rip scene coming to games with some video or audio ripped and or better options such as things that are not essential like videos / audio downsampled to 720P / Lossy Audio Compression?

I look at some repacks and I can see this happening because some video and hd audio take up more then half the game and no options for smaller file size to help people in bad places of the world with slow internet.

I can see it happening with games getting bigger. It wouldn't be exactly like the days of 2001 but quality downsampled releases will probably be made.

Repackers may make it an option to download games 1-to-1 bit perfect packs or being able to choose downsampled video / audio addon packs.

I feel for you man. What's even worse: this whole Covid crisis has exposed how bullshit those data caps are to a lot of Americans. I really wonder how those ISP's that gave unlimited can get back to that scam after showing they've been lying all that time. Wish the people would actually protest against that than other nonsense.

I still use repackshits and even have them lying around on a 2.5" 4TB HDD.
Beats having to DL the whole shebang, and it will only take a long while to install if the repackshit is amateurish or if you have a really really REALLY potato-like machine.
*shrugs*

Years before I left I had unlimited bandwith (since 2008). But yes Belgium was backwards on it as well. And why shouldn't I shout to loud? I live in Sweden son. Glorious land of 10gb internet speeds and unlimited data. Troll Dad

I thought Telecunt and Belgascum finally offered unlimited plans or did they go back to their usual fuckwittery?

I just want unzipped releases to be a thing.

I can download a 50gig game faster than I can unzip it. It's dumb.

Makes no difference. It's based on storage location. SSD definitely help extracting but it can still suck.

My specs:
Ryzen 5950x @ boosting 5ghz, Gigabyte x570 Aorus Master, 32gb G.Skill Trident Neo pc3600 ram, nVidia RTX 5080, SoundBlasterX G6, Samsung 980 Pro m.2 1TB and Hynix m.2 1TB storage SSD. Custom watercooling loop.

Shit, having more than one hard drive will already speed it up a bit. Or do people still have just one massive drive partitioned? Confused

I have 5 SSD's. I can never afford the largest ones so i'll just increase the number of drives over time. The biggest is my system disk which is a 1TB. Eventually i need to sell them off and just get 2x 4TB or whatever.

The main reasons for it is that seems the scene groups "disapeared" recently, and P2P releases are also dry.

I think cloud gaming is becoming the new "RIP". Especially regarding space, because "dirt cheap" is all fine, but if you have a game like CODMW, that is like 150GB all in all, You still need to spend 20-40$ of ssd space, just for that one game. Add another 2 like Destiny 2, TESO, GTA V, all games someone could play at the same time, especially now, and you have like 100-150$ of ssd space occupied.

And then you can argue, yeah, but you can also download @ much higher speeds, which is true, but swapping games all the times by redownloading them, I could just as well install them on HDD's again, since loading a game from HDD is still a lot faster, then to redownload and reinstall.

Or I could just, in the near future, stream it from the cloud Smile

i hate repacks (fitgirl), still huge amount of time to download, huge amount of time to unpack, and probability game will work it's 60-70%, and when the game not working go play detective on google why is not working, not worth the hassle.

Unlikely, because a lot of games each use custom format for the media that can be made lossy and repacking them properly takes time and research and doing it for each game it really tiresome. Plus, let us be honest, most of the internet is in better shape than in very early 2000. I dont think it will go any further than what FitGirl does with optional setups. Simply not worth it.

+1

Back in 90-00s most of the games used red book audio format and avi,bik files for FMV/Cutscenes which were easy to rip.

Today games offer a more solid experience by using the game's engine for cutscenes which are rendered realtime. Also games tend to pack every resource into 1-2 files making it even more complex to decide what can be ripped….

And then we come to the speed and popularity of the internet: Huge speed and you get internet in you veins when you born.

They are very small because you get rid of the things you don't need, like languages. And they are fast to download because there are many seeds. And usually these prepatched and precracked releases just work out of the box.

I like the fitgirl releases, I prefer it over regular ones, as it removes the useless bloat. I guess it's the closest we are to the classic rips.

And after downloading you get 45 minutes to 150 minutes of unpacking, how many gb i can download in that time, 3x of that unpacked game.

Nope. The pc-rip scene died when CLASS gave up the throne, but somehow lasted until MYTH got busted. There's really no need to have pc rips anymore, and the p2p repack groups do a good enough job if you're on limited bandwith.
