"The growing virtual reality platform wars got a little more complex this morning. That's because graphics chip maker AMD has thrown in with Toronto-based startup Sulon Technologies to unveil the Sulon Q headset, which aims to provide a PC-based, fully tracked virtual reality experience without the need to tether yourself to a computer tower.

According to the announcement, that "wear and play" untethered design makes the Sulon Q quite different from competition like the Oculus Rift or SteamVR-powered HTC Vive, which both need a relatively high-end PC to actually generate the images on the headset. With the Sulon Q, the Windows 10 PC hardware is built into the unit, including an expected four-core AMD FX-8800P processor with a Radeon R7 graphics card."

Well it seems like it's something alongside microsoft hololens, that is wireless, because it's got win10 pc inside... so yeah... not really something to rival vive or oculus. Not that I think any of this technology will make sense in less than 5 years to say the truth.

Even as someone who likes their graphics card and think they offer a great value (and even decent drivers recently), I have to wonder how didn't they went bankrupt yet.

Even more competition on the VR market is more than welcome.
Drops the price in the long run and hopefully means better quality devices too.

Why AMD is wasting money on this pos?

1) Lenovo Legion 7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3080 16Gb, 32Gb DDR4, SSD 1TB +2TB

Why ?

Their gpus are actually the only good thing they do.
I am super happy with my now aging 7870. It never runs hotter than 60c in stress but that might be thanks to gigabyte...

That GPU will never be enough to drive high quality VR titles, but its a start I guess and it may be an investement in the future.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Wonder if the Sony VR will have something like this for their headset since the PS4 won't have enough power by itself.

I think this is more likely to be a competitor to the Gear VR mobile VR.

Are they?
It's not them making the devices. They seem to just be supplying the hardware. And selling chips is how they make money.

That would actually be an interesting solution, especially if there was a way to make the GPUs in PS4 and the VR set work together (one GPU per eye and all that). Unfortunately there is no way to connect an external GPU to the PS4, so it's not gonna happen.

As it stands now, it's an "either or" scenario and it would only make sense if the system onboard the HMD would be more powerful than the one in the console itself, which is unlikely to happen for obvious reasons.

EDIT: Now if they introduced some kind of a side-port thing in a newer PS4 revision...
