VALVE ANNOUNCES THE LAB

March 7, 2016 -- Valve has announced plans to debut "The Lab," a compilation of new VR experiments, at next week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA. Set in a pocket universe of Aperture Science, "The Lab" offers multiple ways to enjoy room-scale VR. It will be offered free of charge via Steam this spring. More information will be made available next week at GDC.

Since these will be released to the public I figured a new thread is justified. I wonder if they will be made in Source 2 or Unity.

Depends on how good the Rift supports room-scale VR. Palmer claims "works fine". http://www.roadtovr.com/oculus-rift-touch-room-scale-vr-palmer-luckey-works-fine/

Palmer claims alot of stuff. Like how no one would buy a $600 device and how the Rift would be in the $350 ballpark. Or that there are no Rift exclusive games.

I highly doubt the Rift will ever do room-scale anywhere near as good as the Vive. It's just not made for it, otherwise Oculus wouldn't tell devs to develope for a 2 front facing camera setup.

Description of the 5 demos: http://www.roadtovr.com/valves-lab-wondrous-playground-full-vr-toys-htc-vive/

Quote:
The level of graphical polish is incredibly high on each of these experiences/minigames, something that we’ve come to expect from Valve’s VR department. Voice acting, character interactions, and a tight understanding of hand controlled devices with the HTC Vive make it clear that Valve isn’t just throwing out interesting tech demos for the sake of it, but rather using the demo collection to give Steam VR users a ready-made tour of the headset and it’s capabilities.

Oh so it will be 12 in total! http://www.shacknews.com/article/93757/going-hands-on-inside-valves-the-lab

I was transported back to the hub of The Lab. This will be the place from which players will jump to the 12 different experiences. There will also be content unlocked inside of the hub as you progress through different games. The Lab could very well be the Wii Sports of HTC Vive's launch lineup. It has a number of fun games with serious replay value. It is all packaged up with the trademark humor of some of our favorite Valve franchises. I did ask one of the developers of The Lab if we would see future standalone Valve franchises make there way to VR, and he just smiled and nodded. Half Life 3 not confirmed, yet. In the meantime, The Lab will provide HTC Vive early adopters with a bunch of really fun activities that showcase the platform's strength.

Well guess what, Valve the game developer still exists, and it still has the goods. At GDC this week I played Valve's next game, which will be out in the next month or so and which is bloody brilliant.

Alright, so The Lab will be free, and is no more than a Portal-themed collection of virtual reality demos designed to show off the capabilities of the HTC Vive headset. But it's no less than a totally thrilling gaming experience assembled with a characteristic mix of humour, invention and finesse. Welcome back, Valve-the-game-developer.

It kind of blows my mind that all of those experiences I just described, plus eight more, will be completely free. Valve says they should arrive at or shortly after the HTC Vive's April 5 launch.

How many years till a full blown Valve Portalesque VR game.. Very Happy 2? 3?

Thought the two cc's was the correct one, guess not:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculus

And what I meant was: will someone with oculus be able to run "the lab"? Or will it be exclusive, or only playable with the vive(since the controls for oculus aren't out yet)?

Well, they've reached Portal "2" now, so don't expect a continuation at least.

Occulus was a Marvel Villain. His name was probably a misspelling originally Very Happy
