Well that's great i guess not that i can't just emulate every version available these days (PS3 HD remaster in RPCS3 is my favorite by far) but native pc ports are always appreciated and good for preservation.

So they can re-release this game 2 times (PS3, now PS4 etc) and they can't dunno... Remaster Viewtiful Joe 1+2 and in the meanwhile make the 3rd entry of VJ?..I mean, the 2nd left a big cliffhanger ending...

And where's my Jet Set Radio Future HD port!?

Anyways, back on topic. Great to know this. The game sometimes was pretty confusing though when it comes to battles or making the fucking brush to paint or make the results working..

This here is easily the best non-Zelda Zelda game, heck it is even better than most Zelda games and IMO stands tall among the best games of all time, created by the team we now know as Platinum Games, back when they were still part of Capcom.

It is quite lengthy for a non-grindy adventure game, probably around 40 hours just for the main quest the first time around, including loads of unique and creative gameplay mechanics, beautiful art style, great level/boss/enemy design and a very fitting soundtrack.
The game is simply a masterpiece and a work of art.

I 100%-ed this game on 2 different consoles already and will do so again on PC, finally in 1080p60 (whether native or Durante'd).
All of you who haven't played it yet, should do so now, and if you don't like it, you're probably dead inside Razz

Aw yiss, I've always been interested in this game Very Happy
I only tried the emulated PS2 version for a couple of hours several months ago but eventually had to abandon it because of the missing effects and technical inaccuracies, so this is an excellent news.

30 fps confirmed:

Which is not surprising since all the other versions run at 30 fps as well, i tinkered with the 60fps code for the ps2 version before in pcsx2 and so much shit is hardcoded to 30 fps in this game it really is a shitton of work, the code breaks a lot of the gamelogic unfortunately.

Understandable, it would take actual work to uncap the framerate, a herculean effort really. These are professional game programmers who are being paid to do their job but come on, do you expect them to make all these changes? Too much work, 30 fps it is.

Also, did I mention that this is old code for the PS3? Probably written in ALGOL 60 or some other arcane language, better not touch it.

If they released the source, some hobbyist would implement uncapped or 60fps in a couple of weeks... Laughing

I wouldn't count on it as i said i tinkered with the code it's a lot of work to get this to run in 60 fps without breaking the game.

CRINGE!!

Well, I am not talking about memory hacks on a fucking emulator. I am talking about the dev team that does the PC remaster, they have the fucking source code and can make any engine changes they want.

Same shit, well actually memory hacks are bit easier to do since you don't need to change so much code to achieve the result, the only hard part is finding the correct values.

Also port isn't done by Capcom inhouse, QLOC is contracted to do it and they are one of the best porting teams in the industry if they say it's too much work it probably really is.

Budget & time wise it would probably be a few weeks worth of work and testing ensuring nothing else breaks.

Durante has some experience with this with DSFix which breaks a number of things in the game if 60 FPS is enabled but it's since been improved via commits to the project since it's on Github but there's still a rare issue with ladder climbing.

He also worked on Little King Story and despite having source code access it couldn't be done so I'd imagine Okami is the same due to the way it's coded where you'd have to rewrite large parts of said code to support uncapped framerate or even just a 60 FPS cap instead.

Emulator hack above is sped up for example and has a few broken gameplay features, uncapping it is the easy part, slowly fixing every little problem that arises is the hard part taking a lot of coding and testing of basically the entire game to ensure nothing breaks and then more testing for every fix to ensure nothing else broke.

Perhaps a fan made fix will be provided but I'd imagine it's the same here, initially things will be kinda broken if it just uncaps the framerate and then it's months of tweaking until it's completely fixed.

Capcom/QLOC could probably get it done with an extra month or two but delaying just the PC version was probably not worth it and I'm not sure what they're expecting in terms of sales though if it does well they might spend some time patching the game up although even then uncapping the framerate might be too big of a thing to do.

I'm not a coder though but I do know that the way this is coded makes it very difficult and time consuming to remove or change and requires testing the entire game over and over again to ensure nothing breaks which it definitively will the first few builds.
(Made worse by being a older game and code base too.)

Durante did improve that game significantly, even though 60fps may not be perfect

Yeah compared to what the previous dev team did not having 60 FPS is offset by the numerous other enhancements and fixes though last I heard the game was still in a rough shape and I guess XSeed considers themselves to be just about done with the game though they do occasionally come back to older games and patch them up so who knows. Smile

For this well the focus was probably 4K support and retooling the code to support this and 16:9 over 4:3 though it sounds like the game can handle both aspect ratios now, 21:9 community might be out of luck though but that can also be fixed via a third party and with less risk of game breaking issues besides perhaps not perfectly aligned menu and UI screens depending on how those work.

Will be nice to have the game natively on PC though emulators have allowed the game to be playable in a similar state for a while now so in that regard 60 FPS would probably have been the big improvement though it's nice of them to put in as much effort as they do for a old game that seems to be having a strong fan base but not quite the same strength for actual sales though this HD release might see it pick up a bit.

While it would be nice if it was the norm it's good that they aren't just pushing it out with near minimal work, Capcom used to do that a few years ago but has at least improved a bit. Smile
(DMC3 might actually get a somewhat more playable PC port at long last, RE4 well that a bit rough initially but had some improvements via patches and it's better than the first port attempt though the amount of work that HD mod group is putting in retooling textures, effects and 3d models is astonishing.)

And then there's Bandai Namco and Koei who kept putting out one weird port after the other but it looks like they too are finally improving a little bit.

Well I doubt Capcom will go with Denuvo for the game so it might be worth a download at least though you never really know with publishers.

EDIT: Well I only have a passing knowledge on how some of this works, I do know a old unfamiliar code base is not easy to work with though or even come back to if it's the original team (Which I guess it's not.) QLOC especially for the PC port likely had a lot of work to get that build in order, gamepad support for three different systems with Steam, X360 and PS4 support and then mouse and keyboard in addition for just the input options so if there was to be feature parity or if the PC was the only platform that could hit 60 FPS reliably then that was probably in the risk zone already and then it was sealed when they did an attempt and found just how much it broke and likely estimated the amount of time it would take to fix this.

Which since it's old code and basically comes down to testing and trial and error fixing bit by bit yeah I can understand Capcom not wanting to delay the game if they already had a deadline for the end of 2017 unfortunate as it might be, probably also influenced by the estimated sales figure since it usually always comes down to money for these decisions and how much work they're willing to put in for certain features or the amount of time to spend on the port in general.
