Nekro is an overhead, randomly generated action game about summoning evil forces of darkness to do your bidding!
Hailing from the era of great classics such as Myth: The Fallen Lords, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Dungeon Keeper and more, we are creating a game rooted deep in PC gaming's history, but with all the flourishes you've come to expect from a modern experience.
Combining full HD graphics, a unique premise, solid gameplay, and tight controls Nekro can be one hell of a game - but not without you...
THE GAME
We love that old school gameplay with new school flare and attitude. For Nekro, we decided to combine the best elements from our favorite games of the last couple decades while adding in our own personal twist.
Nekro is a light-hearted yet dark themed game about controlling a powerful necromancer. The game's premise was created from a conversation that went something like this: "Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a game where you could just walk into an innocent town, raise a bunch of zombies, skeletons and monsters and watch while they rip the townspeople to shreds?" Then we paused and said, "Well, why isn't there?" What followed was many nights concepting, discussing and creating. "Wouldn't it be cool if the Nekro could craft his own spells, but...collecting reagents in a randomly generated world!" The cumulative result of these discussions is what you see before you.
In Nekro, you are the bad guy; a powerful necromancer able to create unthinkable horrors out of the twisted lifeless corpses of your enemy. Blood is your fuel; razing towns and slaughtering anything that opposes you is your creed. Even though you are evil, the humans of the land are corrupted, and will stop at nothing to wipe you out. You will face many enemies and challenges in the world of Nekro. Here's some of the content rich features you can expect to see in the final product:
A completely randomized world: Never play the same game twice.
Fully-integrated crafting system: Your spells and 'armor sets' are created with the things you find in the world...and the things you take from those within it.
A beautiful and rich world to explore: Nekro will have a host of unique tilesets and locations. From the burning hells to the ravaged lands of the east there will always be a new place to go, and as always, all of them are randomly generated. The game will put a big emphasis on exploration and discovery. The world is teeming with things to find and enemies to conquer.
Unique creature-based gameplay: Your summons will do your bidding but are not under your direct control. Each creature you create will have a set of behaviors unique to it. It's up to you to find the best combination of creatures to use for each situation. However, the nekro himself isn't powerless. If all else fails, you can always run intro the fray; transforming into a powerful demon and lay waste to your enemies.
World changing events: Each faction of the game (the nekro, the humans and the neutrals) gets their own world events that happen at random and can drastically effect the outcome of a fight. The nekro casts the world into Eternal Darkness, boosting his power. The neutrals summon The Werewolves of the Full Moon, spawning deadly werewolves across the land. And the humans call upon The Crusaders of the King, sending out extremely powerful templars to hunt monsters.
Available for PC, Mac and Linux: And completely DRM Free! (We hate it as much as you)
Sounds cool. They're talking about how there's no game like this though. Haven't they heard of Overlord? It's pretty much the same thing they want to make.

No seriously now, this game looks fairly good, if i ever wanted to "kickstart" some game, it would be this game, sadly, with upcoming GW2 Digital Deluxe version and probably Diablo3, i wont spend any money on games in upcoming months :X
Did all those kickstarter videos try to be funny? Schaeffer IS funny. Why does every other dev think, that he is funny too? BTW the problem with kickstarter right now: There was/is a game dev boom right now and people spend lots of money in those different kickstarter projects. Well and I guess people want to play some of those before firing out and more cash

Project sounds interesting though, best of luck!
I guess humour is the way dev's try and get a message remembered plus showing some part of their creative talent. The Al Lowe Larry one was quite good.
The best part of Kickstarter is that has underwritten the future of the gaming industry. Pre-sales to fund development of the product is a viable business model where file sharing becomes more and more ubiquitous. (May information, thought and ideas continue to run free)
Of course the real question for the future is where do publishes fit in the new model going forward. Well that's the innovator's dilemma right there. This maybe be small but it growing and will probably end up overtaking the big publishing business model.
This combined with the GDC presentation on the decline of consoles and the uptake of tablet games funded by kickstarter would suggest that crowdsourcing is the future and big publishers are in terminal decline.
yea, most of the videos are horribly unfunny
wasteland intro was ok as it parodied the publisher side of things
but the follow up fake talk-show was embarrassing
brian said they wrote another one but then decided against it, thinking people would prefer an informative one instead, and they were right
If for example Molyneux was on-board with this project, I would definitely support it since the concept seems good, but well no big names and excruciatingly unfunny video makes me doubt this project's success. Still, best of luck. Hopefully it will succeed what it is trying to do.
The true test for kickstarter will be when the games should be delivered. Schaeffer's and Fargo's projects may succeed becuase they are fairly simple (in terms "not big budget") - a classic point & click adventure and top down rpg. And those are legends in gaming business so they are some kind of guarantee that it will be delivered.
And they wanted a lot of money.
And now there pop uped a lot of small developers that want money promising great ideas. But do they really can guarantee to make it with much smaller budget? I have my doubts. I think that some smaller but innovative games may make it like FTL but the rest won't and thus bring the end to the motion. And Takedown - I smell wasted money there.

Molyneux? Fuck that idiot who never makes games he promises.
Well you could say the same about almost every veteran of the gaming industry.. Remember W.Wright over-hyping Spore? Or S.Meier promising the best CIV to date with CIV5. These games weren't the best, but they were certainly above mediocre.
Its part of their charm, but I do agree that making promises which never they never deliver is annoying, but alas they are at least trying to make different games, not just some Generic Shooter v.666 again.
How about The Movies ? It was quite unique and often overlooked.
How about Fable 1? I think it was quite good. Sequels however not, but he did recently say that one of the reasons for leaving Lionhead is that he didn't have time to be creative and that running a big company requires more attention, thus he was able to contribute very little to Fable 2 and 3.
This is what he said said, but if its true or not, we'll never know.
Moreover I quite strongly disagree on the "celebrated for trying" part. People need to take risks, that is one of the basis for creative success. Usually the end result is that you'll have more failures that successes.
I do see your point of view, but as long as he has backers, he must do something right.
This is it! We've come down to the final days of Nekro's Kickstarter Campaign.
We have some big news, and some important information to talk about on this final push to the finish line.
It's come down to this: We're going to keep doing as much as we can to get the word out until the very last hour of the campaign, but for now, with no big leads, we have to assume what we have is what we're going to get. This, however, isn't a bad thing. In fact, it's very good. See, we have over 2,000 backers. If you look on this very site, there are Kickstarters that have half the amount of backers we have and twice the amount of money. How is this possible? Pledge tiers.
We have over half of our backers subscribed to the $15 and $25 dollar tier. If we have even a quarter of those backers up their pledges to 50$ or above, we can make our goal. There's been a bit of confusion on what happens if the kickstarter doesn't succeed, so let me explain where we're at. I'm going to be a bit blunt and completely honest here, as I want all of you to understand exactly what's at stake.
If the kickstarter does not go through Nekro cannot happen. This is the unfortunate reality of the situation. We will not be restarting the kickstarter for a lesser amount and the game will not be coming out 'one way or another' as many seem to think. Let me explain.
The amount we are asking for is the bare minimum we need to make this game. Up to this point, myself, my partner, and the few other people working on the project have been doing so either without pay, or have been using our savings. We have put in countless nights, staying up until the sun rises, neglecting our families, sleep, and our lives. We did this because we wanted to prove to you, our backer, that we aren't just all talk; that we can make this a reality. We didn't feel right asking for money without having proof of our claims. However, the process that lead us to this point is not suited for the development of a full-scale title. If we get the $100,000, this will be used to offset the massive time demands this game is making on us by hiring more people (we will not be taking the money for ourselves at all.) However, we will still be paying for this game for the remainder of its development cycle out of our savings, even with the $100,000. Making a game of this type takes a lot more than the amount we're asking for, so know that the $100,000 is our bare minimum. A lot of people are saying we should restart the Kickstarter and ask for half the amount in the event of it's unsuccessful conclusion. The reality is, this cannot take place for the aforementioned reasons.
That's the gloom and doom part - but here's the good news. There's over 2,000 of us, and we're all passionate about this project! We have seen other Kickstarters do it with less, and we know for a fact it's possible. It comes down to you guys. The cool thing is it won't take a lot. $40,000 may look like a lot of money at a glance, but if everyone slides up their pledge tier we can easily hit the mark.
We know this is for some a difficult thing to do. So we wanted to sweeten the pot a bit and give you guys what we know you've been wanting - a box copy of the game. For the next 6 days we will be offering a special $99 dollar pledge tier just for you. Here's what you'll get for this special tier:
A Collector's Edition Box Copy of the game: We will only be printing this for you guys. This is a one-time offer and will not be offered again at any point. The box will be signed by the entire team and made out to you!
A Behind the Scenes "Making-of" DVD included in the box: Go through all of Nekro's development and see how the game grows from day-one all the way through to launch. We'll show concept art, game builds, and brainstorm sessions that will not be released to the public.
A Nekro iPhone/Android 'Alchemy App': View in-game models in real-time 3D, get all the stats on any unit in the game, try out different brewing combinations, test out unit stats, and read live updates about the game on this awesome portable app.
Get access to our Live Development Stream: We've decided we're going to stream out work on the game. Watch us make artwork, write code, talk about ideas, and even chat with us live on our stream.
Of course, anyone that's pledged higher than $99 will automatically get this new tier included in their list of rewards. Additionally, the new $99 will include all prior rewards: the soundtrack, the t-shirt, a digital download copy of Nekro as well as your name in the credits. This is a ton of content available for this price, and we're really excited to be able to offer it to you guys.
If just a quarter of our backers purchases this exiting new tier, we hit our goal. Plain and simple. We have all the backers we need to make Nekro a reality. We can hit the goal tonight if everyone makes the switch. I have no doubt we can do this and you guys should too.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me or leave a comment. As always, I'll do everything I can to help. Thanks so much for your support! We're so close to our goal. If we all band together we'll all be exploding punge corpses in no time!!
For international shipping of the $99 tier, please add $15.
