Synopsis "Today is another typical day in Gleaner Heights. I got up, went to the general store, bought some seeds, planted them. Cooked some spaghetti bolognese, went out to chop wood. Milked my cows, fed them too. Got in my boat, went underwater with my diving suit. Found a cave entrance, fought a giant-ass crab, grabbed some treasure. Got back up, went to the showroom for a drink. I think the hotel owner's daughter is throwing funny glances at me. I shouldn't have gifted her that boot I fished out the other day..."
Gleaner Heights combines the old-school charm of classic farming games with the suburban gothic atmosphere of certain 90's TV shows, along with adding contemporary game mechanics.
In the day, tend to your crops and animals, go hunting, craft items and befriend the townspeople.
In the night, take a walk around town. Behind locked doors and lit windows, secret lives unfold, and an ever-present evil treatens everything.
Why should I write an article or generally bother with this game?
Gleaner Heights is the product of furious, everyday development for nearly the past two years. It takes away the "safety net" of your typical farming sim and, while remaining cutesy-looking on the outside, it injects themes of lurking supernatural threats, gruesome events, and world-affecting choices and consequences.
Development-wise, I did everything by myself: Programming, graphics, music...but most of all I struggled to create an outstanding experience, a living, breathing world full of mysteries and secrets.
