I had two of these for a while - sold them ultimetly when I got bored with what little games they were supported with. But accuracy was never a problem - when calibrated right my character's arms or other... appandages were moving pretty much exactly as they were supposed to. I don't see why it would suddenly perform differently under VR - but, of course, there's no way to tell for sure, until it's here.
I'm certainly interested in trying it. It's not as expensive and I think it just might work well enough for a beginners experience with gaming VR - gaming, because there are cheaper solutions for other stuff. I'm just not sure if PS4 is powerul enough to run anything really immersive in VR. Colorful, childish games and VR demo gimmicks are all fine, but they aren't the reason I'd be inclined to throw another bag of cash at Sony I need something with more substance for that. We'll see. |
The move feedback is good to hear - at the moment I couldn't find anyone else complaining about this, and plenty of press spent hours playing - so that's a good thing I guess.
With regards to the power of PS4 vs PC hardware, it's a valid point, but then again if you read articles they state that it really isn't as important as you might think. One of the links I provided said they were actually "dumbing down" the visuals as it freaks people out too much. Obviously if it turns out that PS:VR has been left behind in the industry, then I'll just sell my VR and invest in a PC, although I really hope I don't have to do this (I don't really have the space or desire to spend that much money if I don't have to).

But why'd you need 120/90 hz refresh rate if your console cant display more than 30 FPS?

Actually, Sony will reject a game for VR support if the framerate drops below 60.

To be honest I thought it was because most places would be requiring a deposit and Shopto were not. And to be honest I didn't check anywhere else. So do Amazon not require a deposit either?

Don't know mate. I just preordered- they don't usually charge for a preorder so they better not have taken any money. I went with them because they handled the PS4 launch well- custom page to "upgrade my preorder" to one of the bundles which were announced later on.
I pre ordered the day after the announcement though, hope I still get day 1!

It's the same source though, I think they've just reused their previous thoughts in a new article.

I think you may have misread that.
Sony's display has less screendoor than the DK2, but not the CV1 or Vive. It doesn't "kick the ass" of the others other than its higher refresh rate. Quite the contrary, people are saying that the FoV (10 degrees less than the other 2) is quite noticeable. Screendoor is similar between all 3; PSVR is a bit different because it uses a sub-pixel array so it's less pronounced (vaguer, if you will).

That part about lowering visual fidelity because it "freaks people out" is nonsense
If anything, higher fidelity is desired. When I had the DK2, I would've loved for ETS to look better than it does for example, because there are things that do almost stand out as too "fake".
I think PSVR will still be great, but it's definitely behind the other 2 on all fronts. But the price matches that. Then again, all 3 are priced a lot higher than I'd hoped.

http://www.polygon.com/2016/3/15/11241782/playstation-vr-cinematic-mode
Quote: | The system also has a cinematic mode, which "lets users enjoy a variety of content in a large virtual screen while wearing the headset," the press release stated. "Supported content for the Cinematic mode includes standard PS4 games and videos as well as variety of PS4 features including Share Play and Live from PlayStation. Users will also be able to enjoy 360 degrees photos and videos that are captured by devices such as omnidirectional cameras on PS VR via PS4 Media Player, which will let them feel as if they are physically inside the captured scene."
How big will the screen look? That's up to you, but Sony gives some idea. "Users can enjoy content on a virtual screen up to 225 inches (5 meters in width) at a distance of 2.5 meters," the release explains. "The size of the screen will feel different depending on individual users."
The cinematic mode will allow you to play existing PS4 games and use video features, and the player will be able to select small, medium or large sizes for the virtual screen. We were able to try the feature during Sony's event, and the software places the viewer in a black space watching a floating screen; there is no surrounding environment. Nearly all UI elements of the PlayStation 4 will function in this mode, although Sony didn't detail which features wouldn't be available. |
Wow thats truly awesome.

Weren't you expecting that? I was, but maybe i had/have unrealistic expectations.
Certainly the question will be whether or not it's more enjoyable than watching on a high res to screen at a distance?

I kinda was but Id never seen anything confirmed about it until I read that article from 11 days ago last night lol. It will be shame if I prefer my TV to a virtual screen to play games though lol. I guess time will tell.

I'm skeptical about the early vr tech..I've owned the gearvr and sold it after the initial wow factor. I've had an hour with the vive and whilst the tech is very impressive I was underwhelmed with the resolution, the cost and the amount of space it looks like you need to get the most out of it..basically it looked to me you would need a dedicated room for the sensors and wires(that need to be ceiling mounted by all accounts to stop you tripping over them..on the demo the guy was behind me holying them so I could walk freely)

I guess I never really got to experience the true initial wow, so I'm still excited. I had a mediocre PC running the first dev unit of Oculus Rift, so I couldn't experience much... Just enough to get a taste and be excited.
So I'm ready for the next step!
