Valve Software and Vivendi Universal Games today announced the settlement of a pending federal court lawsuit filed by Valve in August 2002. "The settlement provides for the dismissal of all claims and counterclaims. Under the settlement agreement, VU Games will cease distribution of retail packaged versions of Valve's games, including Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and Counter-Strike: Source, effective August 31, 2005. Additionally, VU Games has notified distributors and cyber cafes that were licensed by VU Games that only Valve is authorized to distribute Valve games to cyber cafés and grant cyber café licenses"

Looks like steam will be the only option soon, if you want a valve game. Shocked

Why would you think they would do that?

What would they have to gain from that...it would be quite possibly the worst move they could make as company trying to make it on their own. Talk about shooting yourself down.

soon valve will turn into an isp... and be the only one available on the entire internet... then it will buy out coca cola, so we are all forced to drink Steamola... then it will go after microsoft so people can play steam on their steamos xp... soon after they will mass manufacture everything from toilet paper to tanks... later on they will most likely devide the entire globe into ct's and t's and have a gigantic counter-earth battle...

don't deny it... u know that's how it's gona end up... you know... don't u? silly steam00b Very Happy

I'm not sure. You've seen how much they've been pushing the use of steam, and this way they get the profits directly.

Doesn't affect me really, but it's nice to have a retail box sometimes.

but if you read the terms of the settlement you understand that the only winner here is valve, vivendi stops to sell games in stores, previous cyber cafè license by vivendi are cancelled etc etc

Not true, getting the money directly through steam is far more profitable for the developer, rather then having a publisher take a major slice at retail.

It all depends really on whether they keep churning out quality titles. But this is what Valve wanted, so they must know what they're doing.

Yea with steam valve are gettin like 80% of the profit, the other 20% is used on bw. By using shops etc. i bet they see no more than 40% after all the charges / shipping / advertising.

Do I need to repeat myself? settling out of court is not the same as winning in court.

13% is a closer figure. Yet only 0.6% is lost to Piracy using Steam. Compared to a normal system thats closer to 11% lost to people copying their software is fantastic. Expect more Steam type systems.

that probally cause everyone wanted the game and didn't want to wait for a release group to put it out. not having boxes on the shelves would end up hurting them more in the end unless they change the service were you can send them a moneyorder or something

This is a good point, there were a lot of loyal fans such as myself who pre-ordered blindly.

You say that as if the game wasn't fantastic.

That depends on whether you read between the lines or not. Taken literally it just means as a fan I pre-ordered blindly. But I'll concede I was less than amazed at the end result. Functionary is how I would describe it - instead of pushing the boundaries like Half Life originally did, the sequel played ball within them and suffered as a result in my opinion.

I've never seen such interaction with a game world though, thats what really impressed me. The fact that all the puzzles could be solved by thinking logically and actually felt like something you might encounter in the real world was quite revolutionary for me.

If Valve plan on selling all their games exclusively via Steam, they better lower the prices.

Why? They'll just keep selling them for similar prices to what they do now via steam.

Because I won't buy a game for full price if I don't get something to hold in my hands.
If Valve intend to cut out the publisher and have their own profit margins rocket into the sky, they might as well have the decency to pass some of that along to their customers.
