Would you buy an expensive car if you like cars and you like road trips, or do you think it's fucking stupid? I am planning on buying a relatively expensive car (25-30K) in a year, a Merc or a Lexus. I like luxurious cars and we like touring Europe with a car. I floated this idea between my family and friends, maybe someone wants to buy my Prius for a nice price, me happy the guy buying happy. I've gotten some weird remarks.
"Why buy an expensive car? Doesn't a cheaper car work?". Well, why buy a 60" TV? I'm sure you can watch TV on a 32" one. Why buy a four bedroom house? Two bedrooms should be enough. Why buy a 250 euros shoe because it has some guy's name on it? etc.
"You should have enough for the rainy days!!!". What is "enough money"? What if I die before the rainy days come?
"Guys buying expensive cars are compensating something". Isn't a car too big to use as a penis?
"Modern cars are devalued, never buy an expensive one". Doesn't everything get devalued? When did cars ever go up in value? What age was that?
"You should save up for your old age". Why would I need a shitload of money when I'm 70 years old? Is that when you're supposed to start enjoying life?

I'm not sure what the purpose of this thread was supposed to be Very Happy So here's a question to make it an almost useless thread. Would you guys save money until you drop dead with a lot of dineros in your account, or would you just buy that shit? Especially here in the Netherlands, there's an obsession with saving money. I don't understand this hoarding behavior. Everyone needs savings of course to counter life's inevitable shit, but I doubt it needs to be more than 10-20K. I don't understand people saving and saving.

If you are financially stable, buy what makes you happy... Once you tick that first box, money is for enjoyment and making your life more fun.

Many people just save money their whole life and never truly live.
If you can afford it, use money to make your life fun and yourself happy as chiv said.

Someone would interpret this as "spend all your cash on fun" But yeah, have fun, but keep it in moderation!

If there is something that you can truly appreciate, you can afford it safely and there is no reasonable alternative, go for it.
Perhaps in case of the car, a used one may be such a reasonable alternative. But I don't much about that Smile

I own expensive speakers. I like listening to speakers a lot and I need them to be good to really appreciate them, so it's money well spent. Not as expensive as the car though Razz

I wanted to drive a nice car at least once while I'm young and grabbed the opportunity with the BMW. Yes it's expensive, yes I can barely afford it but I also know that my next car will be something much much smaller ^_^ like corsa or similar ... (though it should be still reasonably quick!). And I wouldn't be even sad if tomorrow was the last car with the BMW. It was mine and I enjoyed it and I knew that I payed for it with my own monies Smile

But while driving the small car I'll save money for my dream car. That fucking GT-R will be mine! One day I will own a GT-R Crying or Very sad

Oh it's going to be a used car. Devaluation in the first three years is crazy here in the Netherlands.

Haha, I expected reactions in the line of "you stupid fuck" Very Happy

@PumpAction: yeah that's exactly what I feel. I doubt I'd care about a car when I'm 50. If I ever want to go somewhere, I'd just take a plane.

So OP has a tiny penis Troll Dad

If you like cars and road trips it makes sense to spend a bit more buying a comfortable car for those two reasons, plus you're being smart about it and buying a new one (wouldn't be surprised if they are some of most in shape used cars, provious owners were likely some careful old fucks that only got it at 55-60+ yo.)
Now buying a derptan X, THAT would be retarded

actually I buy expensive cars because they have what I want

I want a car
that is German or Japanese
that is under 1400kg that can make 100km/h under 7sec
that has navigation and rear view camera
all round parktronic
that has xenon or led headlights
that has sport suspension with at least dynamic shock absorbers, dynamic ride height is a big +
that has sport seats with side cushions that hold you in tight turns and heating
that has a manual gearbox
that has at least 2 zone climatronic
that has sun roof
having windshield heating is a big +
having HUD display is a big +

find me a cheap and reliable car that does all that, and I'll really consider it

smart people rent fancy shit , road trips means extra dangers, why submit ur own car to that, the moment u buy your new car it loses 50% of its value once u have the key in your hand, its a rip off scam like the diamonds

It's called a road trip, it's the trip that counts. I'd like to drive through the mountains in Austria, Italy, Spain. We also don't like to stay in one city for long. Going to a couple of cities with the plane is time consuming and tireing.

PS. it seems I wasn't clear in my opening post. I am planning on buying a uaed car, 3-4 years old. Buyung a new luxury car in NL for 25-30K is impossible.

A 3-4 year old car for 20-30k? That will be something really nice ^_^ How important is speed for you? Except for germany you won't be able to drive really fast but you still shouldn't go for anything less than 160PS in case you want to overtake easily without taking any risks and especially if your car is a bit bigger.

With anything you enjoy or will use a lot: put in the money for quality when you can afford it.
I find the approach quite the opposite of being stupid. So don't bother too much with what others say... well except the wife xD

Then you've come to the right place. There's a rock-solid, trip-ready, family-friendly, adrenaline-fueled Toyota Yaris waiting for you Cool Face
Perfect condition**, digital display (not like those obsolete speedometers with needles), only ~400k kilometers (which is nothing for the renowned, proud Samurai engine), friendly price depending on the amount of sexual exchange involved in the deal.

**it doesn't take fire when you turn it on, the engine works almost every day!

All joking aside, I would definitely do it, I mean...the initial question Smile
As all the other Humpers have said, if you have the possibility, you should always pursue what gives you positive vibes and makes you happy. Life is definitely too short to waste it on pointless compromises and mental masturbations.
I save money only when I have plans ahead, that require spending such money xD (who needs banks anyway!)

I think it is important to spend money if it helps you enjoy life more. I agree with those that say saving it until you're 60+ is "safe" but who knows if you'll even make it to 60+, so sometimes you just have to live a little to make life a less repetitive pattern.

Lexus is luxury? You mean overpriced Toyota?

About buying something expensive or not, in the end it's up to you, do w/ever "floats your boat" so-to-speak. If you consider it's worth it, it's probably worth it, if not, then don't do it.

Lexus really seems silly at this price point. I have a perfect fiat bravo for you man. The polish guy that wanted to buy it didn't show up today so you can get it for a super price! Normally the car would sell for like 20-30k but just today you can have it for as low as ... 3.000€? 2.500€? 5.000€??! Come in and find out!

(no srysly buy my car!)

Hm I expected reactions like "be sensible guy!".

A Turk driving a Fiat? I'd be gunned down the moment I get out of the car.

Danyutz wrote:

Drive a GS450H or anything from the LS line, than come say that again. Sadly those two are overkill for me, so I go for the little brother. The interior finishing of a modern Lexus is beyond any of the Germans.

I never liked BMW, but I won't go into that since it'll unleash a loooong discussion. To make it short, if handling was my only concern I'd go buy a ricer.

Lexus is amazing quality, ignore the haters. If you buy used merc or bmw make sure you save a couple grand for a decent initial maintenance. And have the gas prices/cost of travelling in mind as well. But absolutely go for it, it is worth it if you like driving and road trips (just, as I said, try to have the costs all written down to avoid bad surprises and set some extra aside for unexpected maintenance).

I grew up with BMW and Mercedes, my father was a Turkish car nut, the "premium German quality" is waaaay overrated. The old Mercs were tanks, unbreakable, but that age ended 15 years ago.
I actually take my father as an example, that's why I want a sexy car when I'm still relatively young. The guy who changed cars every two months in the past, drives a 2002 Clio now, because he doesn't give a shit about cars anymore Sad I assume that'll happen to me also.
