A-Train

Anyone here into the A-train series. I've been interested in it with the recent absence of this type of game over here, and apparently 8 was released in English. 9 is out now, but I'm not sure if there is an English translation available for it.

I just thought of it again as Gamersgate has 8 on sale for the next couple days:
http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-AT8/a-train-8

Graphics aren't bad, apparently 9's are much better.

I never played it as the reviews were terrible. Have you got any info on 9? Haven't seen anything about it.

Think I'd rather just play A-Train on an Amiga emulator instead.

9 is out, but there is no translation yet. You can buy it online but it's expensive.
around 90 GBP. There is one guy working on a translation of it. 9 looks very good and the only really negative things I've heard about it is that it's just hard to get into. Not necessarily that it's bad. I think it's just a little more hardcore sim than say a simcity societies was.

Yeah, I couldn't find a good download for it, so I'm debating just jumping in and getting it on sale at Gamersgate. I really like to keep all my purchases on steam, but I've gotten a couple at GG so far, so 1 more probably wouldn't hurt.

If you want to get some info on the game, this guy writes an English blog about the game:
http://www.a-train9.com/blog/

and he actually has some ebay auctions up to buy the box version of 9 (Japanese)

They really just gotta hire some Japanese college student to spend a couple weeks translating the text. I really don't understand some of these companies. For a couple weeks salary you could translate most games (Except for large RPGs which have massive amounts of text) and open your game up to a whole new market.

Even if you didn't translate flavor text in this game, menus, information, etc. would basically make it playable.

Been looking into the series a bit and I'd love to give A-Train 7 a try since I dig the iso gfx, but I can't find the game anywhere. Anyone have any idea if there ever was an English version? Official site has screenshots with mixed English/Asianese texts: http://www.a-7.jp/screen.htm

So a bit of a mini review here:
I've played it for about 3 or 4 hours now. At first it seemed impenetrable but I quickly got the hang of it.
It's misleading at first because of the way the first town is laid out.

Essentially in this game you're doing 2 main things. Moving materials and people.
Your main source of income is moving people, materials are necessary to increase that income.

Material factories produce materials but they must be first transported before they can be used. Even though each factory has a depot attached to it, you can't build from that depot and they won't fill up deports themselves. They will only deliver to a station. Which means you have to make materials in one area and move them to another. Need materials in both places? Send a train each way carrying materials.
odd yes.

People are transported to work and what not. Usually residentials go off to business areas, etc. but as the game expands those get blurred.

Towns will use the materials you've brought autonomously, but sometimes they don't want to, so you can initiate construction of things if you want.

So what you need to get started is this:
a materials factory producing materials near a station. A freight train to haul it to another station, with a materials depot nearby.

People tend to go to work at 8 am and come home at 5. If you keep your trains running non-stop, you'll waste money. So set up your trains at one station to depart at 8 am, and at the far station to come back at 5 pm. Doing this on the starter town and dumping a couple waste of money trains, I'm making like a million a day give or take.
But that's not a lot in this games as costs are realistic. A low-end train alone costs you 6 million. Laying track for even a short journey can be 30 or 40 million.

All-in, this isn't too bad. I've read that 9 dramatically improves on a lot of things and adds a lot of features , I think there are trucks and things in 9, to make it more like TTD. This is more like railroad tycoon.

You can buy some buildings if you want to spur development. You'll need materials for most of them except for materials factories.

You can try to make some money off them, and there is also an extensive stock exchange.

There is a pretty large amount of trains in the game. I'm not sure around 30 different trains.

As a hint the AR3 is a good commuter train. 200% carry and low cost per mile. They start you off with 2 AR5s which basically make no profit.

I think it's decent and worth a look once you get ahold of it, oh. E-S-D-X are the scroll keys for the screen in this. Took me a minute to figure that out.
Not sure how to re-map them.

I looked far and wide and I actually found A-train 9..
it took some doing, but I've got it. installed, and updated. It's totally Japanese but after playing with 8, I can probably figure some stuff out. However, this is far more detailed. It is much more like TTD. There are cars, trucks, and other things in this version. So fairly different from 8.

[edit]
I need to figure these menus out,

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

the game looks pretty great compared to 8.
Should have learned Japanese instead of Korean.

Well I've been playing 9 more now and started to get the hang of it. I've also got a friend who has graciously agreed to translate what I can't figure out from the menus.

she's done the settings screens for me, and I've just shipped her off about 10 more screens.
I knew some of them, but she'll fix them up for anyone who wants to try it out.

The game is very interesting and is much closer to a TTD.
Trains are a big part, but there are buses and trucks as well. You can set up trucks to move freight to areas you don't need/want to run trains to, and you can set up buses to pick up passengers outside the radius of the train stations you set up
I know basically no Japanese, and other than having been to Japan 3 times, and a very tiny knowledge of chinese characters from Korean (I recognize a couple in the game, mostly to do with size and dates) I know none, but this game is very playable with out. At least to the point I'm at now.

You can also build roads in 9, something you couldn't do in 8.

Here are the two config files translated.

I'll post the rest when she sends them to me. I'll also consider writing up some basic walkthrough stuff as well. A few things I've figured out thus far.

If you're interested, I've generated a couple new screenshots since I've sent the bunch to her with some new things on it.
There is also an HTML manual you could run through google translate and tidy up. Google doesn't do a bad job these days, but parts are still a bit awkward and not clear. It's not actually very big. For a sim game. Apparently the company also sells a guide book, this is more of just an explanation of how to use the various tools and what each menu option does.
I think that for those who like TTD this could be a decent time. I played more with the buses and trucks last night. I figured out how to make custom routes for everything, set start and stop times for buses (don't want them running at 2 am wasting money)
etc

I got back a few translated screens for anyone who wants to try this. I've been playing it more and it has actually become fairly easy to figure out a lot of the basic stuff, just by trial and error.

Here are a bunch of translated menus in no particular order:

The game is very expensive in Japan. It seems both 8 and 9 are very expensive in Japan. However, the price for an English version of 8, is much cheaper $30 on gamers gate (full price) vs like $70 in Japan.
I expect if 9 were translated and released it might be cheaper, $40-$50.
but yeah those are the prices of games in Japan.

You might try googling that big giant number I posted earlier, it might provide enlightenment..

You should see the price for the complete Railworks pack (Railworks is a hobby railroad simulator, on the comp rather than built on a table) This the the Euro price at time of writing;

€712.43

All games are expensive in Japan. Most games range from 80$USD up to 150$USD. Same with Anime, extremely expensive, this is why some developers, and animators hate bringing things outside of Japan. They need to lower their prices for it to even sell.

Did you grab yourself a copy?
I find that you have to get ready to play with it on high speed. It can take a few months for areas to start developing, it's far more realistic than other style games. So stuff doesn't just spring up overnight. I just started my first totally new area on one map, running materials and bodies out there (2000 people a day or so) but it's taken about 6 months for it to really turn into anything but a couple of houses.
Got a couple office buildings and about 2 dozen houses out there now, plus a couple other commercial buildings.

It's been out awhile in Japan now..like 1.5 years..so I'm not sure if they'll translate it at this point or not. But believe me when I say it's very playable without it. I know no japanese and I'm getting by okay and learning the ropes well. It's worth "trying" until we get an English version at least Wink

The taxes in this game are brutal...at least they say taxes, but usually taxes are a percentage.
Each year the tax guy pops up and then bam 150-175,0000,0000 yen just gone. I thought it was a percentage , so I spent a bunch and had like half the money of the previous year, but same amount gone.

It's hard to generate that kind of income, and be able to do anything else. I think if I just let the game run for a year without spending any money, I might be able to cover it, but I'm not sure how you're supposed to get ahead having to pay that kind of cash.

I must be missing something.
Perhaps xdbs will find something in the help file I sent him.
