Quote:

New turn-based RPG from the creators of Cthulhu Saves the World. Inspired by Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star & Suikoden. PC/Mac/PS4/Vita.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a turn-based sci-fi Japanese-style RPG from Zeboyd Games currently scheduled to come out in 2014 for the PC, Mac, PS4, and Vita!

Alyssa L’Salle is one of the galactic government’s top agents and always manages to save the day! But when she accidentally uncovers a dark conspiracy, her own government outs her as a legendary spy and the people’s champion! Sure, now she has hordes of adoring fans but every villainous organization she’s ever crossed in her career knows who she is and is out for her blood! Can she save the day once more while she faces her greatest challenge… Everyone!?

Quote:

=Unique Features=

  • Good old-fashioned classic turn-based RPG!
  • Save anywhere! Minimal grinding (unless you want to)!
  • Brisk pacing that respects your time!
  • No separate battle screen! Battles take place directly in the dungeons & areas that you explore!
  • 2D visual style straight from the height of gaming's 16-bit era!
  • Animated cutscenes reminiscent of the Sega CD & Turbo Duo era!
  • Soundtrack by Hyperduck (Dust: An Elysian Tail, Precipice of Darkness 4) inspired by the genre greats!
  • Multi-character combo techniques!
  • Intricately designed encounters make each new battle its own challenge!
  • Your own spy headquarters! Recruit new agents to help it grow!

=Gameplay=

  • Turn-based combat!
  • Four character active party!
  • Non-grid-based 2D exploration (diagonals! woohoo!)!
  • Battles take place directly on the maps that you explore! Where you fight may influence what happens in battle!
  • Upgradeable spy headquarters!
  • Character LV-Up system allows customization while still making each character unique!
  • Characters can also be further customized with equipment & support characters (allies that hang out at your spy headquarters who don't go out into the field with your main characters).
  • Multiple difficulty levels so you can fine-tune the experience to fit your own playstyle!
  • Multi-character combo techniques!
  • And much, much more!

Yippeeeeeeeee!! I freakin' love Zeboyd, their games have been nostalgia soaked in happiness, really enjoyable 16bit-style RPGs and I can't wait for this one. Sounds great, looks great, WILL be great! What I like the most? This is a Kickstarter where the developers already know exactly what they're going to make and, roughly, how long it will take .. no stretch goals, no ramping up the development difficulty and time requirement, just this game requiring our money and that's it Very Happy GIMME!! December 2014 and "possibly earlier" if they can raise more than enough money to improve development. YES! \o/

Quote:

What if the kickstarter gets overfunded? We don't know about you, but we hate it when kickstarters get a lot more money than they expected, drastically increase the scope of the game, and end up pushing the release date back months or even years. What's worse, some of these kickstarters drastically underestimate how much all those new features are going to end up costing with the result that they end up running out of money before they manage to fulfill all of their promises.

We don't want this to happen to us!

With the December 2014 fulfillment date, we've given ourselves a bit of leeway as far as development time goes. If we get enough money that we decide that we can spend a couple extra months polishing up the game, we'll be able to without pushing back that date. In addition to that, we could use additional funding to increase our audio budget and hire additional help so that we can get more done without noticeably increasing our development time.

And what if after all this, we end up finishing the game and still have a good chunk of money left over? How about using that extra money to develop some free post-release DLC? We've released some major free DLC for our previous games (the alternate storyline in Cthulhu Saves the World & the Epilogue scenario in Precipice of Darkness 3) so we'd be game for doing something similar with Cosmic Star Heroine. Maybe a separate mini-Roguelike mode ala Lufia 2's Ancient Cave...

So Much Win Me Gusta So Much Win

~edit~

Trolls go away. If you didn't like Zeboyd titles, if you're "not into JapCrap lolz" or you have nothing to contribute, just stay away and kindly don't shit up the thread.

Gonna back this Very Happy. I loved Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star series. I only played the first Penny Arcade RPG though.

Thanks for the heads up Sabin!

Meh... (don't worry, this won't be hating) I'd propably be happy about this since I really enjoyed the old JRPGs in the NES/SNES times (and even further down the road)... but I think that's the problem for me.

There were soooo friggin many of them.

And I played most of 'em. So yeah, while I get a bit of nostalgic flashes when I read names like Chrono Trigger, it just doesn't exite me for some reason. I guess I'm just too fed up with the genre and them becoming cheesier and cheesier over the time didn't help. Maybe cheesy is the wrong word though. I mean, back then, most of these games were something new (because different) for western audiences. I'm talking about the time when we westerners thought that when the first Final Fantasy was released here that it actually was really the first FF game ever (Which it wasn't if I remember correctly. It's the 4th one I think).

Nowadays I just can't get into them anymore Sad

But nice to see that someone wants to deliver such a faithful experience for people that crave for it Very Happy

For me it's not about nostalgia; I'm a jRPG fan through and through Smile I can still go back and play the classics but it's definitely nice to see the original style still living on, rather than being bastardised and butchered for the retard crowd (ala; Final Fantasy XIII) As for the FF game you're talking about, it depends really... FF1-NES was the released globally, then nothing until Mystic Quest on the SNES. That was pegged as the "introduction" to Final Fantasy and was then followed by FFIV, titled Final Fantasy II, for America.

Yeah you're actually right. It was this way. I'm still confused about that whole matter after all these years. All I remember is that I visited a friend back then and we talked about FF and he showed me some magazine that stated that the FF I was playing was actually not the FF sequel or something I thought it was and alot of other games that had completely different titles in the US/EU or weren't released over here at the time etc Laughing

Aye, Square screwed up the naming since they didn't release the two ACTUAL sequels in the West and didn't want to confuse the American audience with the next English release. It took almost a decade after release before the real FFII and FFIII were playable in English, so you had;

FF1 NES
FFMQ SNES
FFII SNES
FFIII SNES
FFVII PS1

GG Square! Laughing

Yup, the Gameboy games Very Happy The original Gameboy RPG was called "Seiken Densetsu" in Japan and then "Final Fantasy Adventure" in America and "Mystic Quest" in Europe. The series went to SNES for its sequel and was called "Seiken Densetsu 2" in Japan but Secret of Mana in the West -- and Square, being Square, didn't give us the next entry in the West either; "Seiken Densetsu 3" Laughing

The OTHER Gameboy Final Fantasy titles, "Final Fantasy Legend" were actually the West-named versions of the Japanese "Makai Toushi SaGa" series Laughing

Sorry, forgot about the EUROPEAN name Very Happy In NA it was "Final Fantasy Legend" and in EU it was "Mystic Quest" but bore no relation to the later SNES version of "Mystic Quest" Laughing Honestly, Japanese developers always bitched about there being "no market in the West" for their RPGs, but it was all their own fault! They kept sabotaging themselves with the name changes and the skipping of entries in certain series', it's ridiculous. Games like FFIV (II), FFVI (III), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana (SD2) and Earthbound (Mother 2) all sold SPECTACULARLY and are considered amongst many to be the finest 16bit jRPGs in the world, not to mention some of the greatest jRPGs of ANY generation .. but nope, apparently there's "no market" >_< It's a goddamn crime that neither FFV nor SD3 were localised in English. FFV at least got a release as part of the PS1 "Final Fantasy Anthology" pack but never a legitimate release on the SNES and neither has SD3 to this day, you have to play the translated version - though admittedly Neill Corlett's translation is sublime.

*cough*

So yeah, I think you can see why I get so excited about new jRPGs in the classic style Very Happy

It's been over a year now but, sadly, the game is no longer coming in 2014. I can't really recall any KS that didn't massively overshoot their claimed launch dates.. but oh well. Now it's;

In 2015 when it’s good & done and when it’s been approved by all platform holders.

https://twitter.com/ZeboydGames/status/547398713602109441

Seems like games will be released as and when certification is done for that specific platform. YAY! No sitting on a finished game for 8 weeks while Microsoft "certify" their XBONE version.

Either way, 30 minutes of alpha footage has been released from the Playstation Experience conference and the FAQ has been updated on their site. Looks incredible, like a scifi planet-hopping Chrono Trigger Very Happy $10 preorder up on their site too, freakin' bargain if the quality of previous Zeboyd titles is anything to go by.

Still no release information, the game script isn't even finished yet, so it's going to be some time yet Sad Still; if anyone was planning on picking this up for the Vita... it seems it may be a tad tougher than the devs were expecting;

Unity for Vita has enormous overheads and the performance is terrible, even "Saturday Morning RPG" runs/ran poorly.

Planet Araenu World Map, Over 200 Maps, Character Themes, Spy Base, and More!

Quote:

We hit a major milestone recently - we have created over 200 maps for Cosmic Star Heroine! To be precise, we're up to 203. This is just over twice as many maps as Cthulhu Saves the World had & almost twice as many as our biggest game to date had (Penny Arcade 4 with 113). And of course, the maps in Cosmic Star Heroine are generally larger & higher quality than the maps in our previous games. From the look of things, final map count in Cosmic Star Heroine will be between 210-220. We still have more stuff to finish after the maps are created, but we're quickly running out of things left to do which is a great feeling!

Oh and in case you didn't know, a map is an area that can be explored without leaving the screen. Most of our maps are 1024x1024 pixels in size, with most of the smaller maps being 512x512 (used mostly for small building interiors). The demo we shared at PSX, E3, and PAX and that can be viewed online had a total of 9 maps in it, although you only see a small part of one of the maps (the demo ends before you really have a chance to do anything on the final map).

We haven't shared any of the character musical themes yet (although you can hear parts of Alyssa's theme in the original Cosmic Star Heroine teaser music) so we thought it was time to fix that. Here are 3 song teasers - Z'xorv, Psybe, and Sue's character themes!

In the original Kickstarter pitch, we talked about having your own spy headquarters. Now that the game is nearing completion, let's talk about how that works.

Originally, your headquarters were going to be just a large building, but given the planet hopping nature of the game, we decided to kill two birds with one stone and have your base double as your own spaceship so you didn't have to constantly be traveling back to any one location. Your base has 3 main floors & 2 smaller floors and as you recruit more people to your base, you unlock new rooms. We're looking at around 20-25 different recruits (a few of which automatically join) - all of which can be equipped as your support teammate to give the entire party a bonus like higher stats, improved healing, more credits earned from combat, bonus turns, and more. Recruits also may give bonuses in your base itself like being able to buy high-end equipment or even being able to fly away from the final "point of no return" dungeon to go finish up any last minute business you may have.

Your base also has a dining hall. Periodically, you'll be able to dine with your allies and chat with them - if you've played the Grandia games, it'll be similar to the dinner scenes there.

In other news, we've got the Vita version up to a decent performance level. We're still working on optimizing the code to make it run even better, although right now, our focus there is on lowering RAM use so it'll run on actual Vita hardware (as opposed to just the dev kit which has some extra RAM). We're making good progress there and hope to have Vita RAM use and performance in an awesome state by the end of the month.

That's it for this update! Thanks again for your patience - the game is really starting to come together now and we're really excited about how good it's going to be when it's done! And if you haven't responded to the surveys that we sent out last month, there's still time!

https://soundcloud.com/hyperduck/cosmic-star-heroine-triple-character-teaser-zxorv-psybe-and-sue

They're still targeting 2015 release, supposedly they're coming up on a lockdown date now that the map construction is nearly done.

Hi everyone! Sorry for not updating last month - we've been busy!

You've been patient with us for so long so we feel it's time to commit to a release window. We expect the game will be ready to release sometime in June, July, or August of 2016. It's looking like we'll be done with all of the art/animation assets (minus any scenario-specific odds and ends we may have overlooked) by the end of April (next month, woo!) and the game should be fully playable from start to finish a few weeks after that. After that, it's time for the final stages of polishing, debugging, marketing, and getting the game approved for release.

All maps have been animated and have obstruction mapping (so you don't walk through walls).

We expect to start the beta next month (hopefully early next month). The beta will initially just include the first few hours of the game and at a later date the rest of the game will unlock. We will not be placing restrictions on sharing your beta experience with others whether that be through text, voice, screenshots, videos, or streaming. We just ask that you be respectful and don't spoil things for anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled. To indicate that this is the beta and to help us better track bug reports, we are most likely going to put a small text overlay in the corner of the screen that indicates the current version of the game. This will only be in the beta and won't be in the release version of the game.

I went through that game on GB emulation not so long ago! Such a fond memory of it.

I played it on my GB when I was a wee lad, but got fucked in the desert world by saving twice in a room where you had to go through barbed wire to go out, without any mana or potions left. I felt crushed Sad

I also remember beating one of the first bosses (the one you need the ball and chain weapon to kill) with mattocks only, since I didn't find that weapon Laughing

Great game, and happy to know it has been remade Smile

They remade the second and third SaGa aka Final Fantasy Legend as well for the Nintendo DS both ports where japan only but they have translation patches available.
I replay them from time to time in Drastic on my Phone or tablet since Final Fantasy Legend II was my very first JRPG, i got a imported (game was never officially released in the EU) module when i was a kid, game was english only and i didn't really understand much of it but i played trough it about 10 times and learned some english in the process.

Yeah it was pretty much perfect don't understand the comments from people not liking the artstyle i think it captures the 90s JRPG feel perfectly especially the Phantasy Star IV style cutscenes.
