Lack of memory is a pretty big problem in the current gen of consoles. They really need to future proof the next gen of consoles in terms of memory, there is no excuse now with how cheap memory is.

As Steelone says, there's not really an excuse not to have even more than 4GB as cheap as it has become; and it'll be even cheaper by the time they need it for mass production of these consoles.

RAM wasn't really that expensive before. Though consoles use different type of ram, and I'm guessing that's not priced at the same level as your average PC consumer RAM. Still more RAM is always a nice addition, 4 GB minimum if you're talking next-gen - that's PS4 and Xbox 3/720/whatever.
I doubt the Wii HD will have anything more that 2 GB of RAM. Or, for that matter, anything really next gen in therms of hardware, this is Nintendo and they're cheap as shit when it comes to hardware. They're more likely to put a 3Dii power led or some other "innovating" crap.

Don't kid yourself, this won't happen unless PCs have 16GB of RAM or something by the time the next consoles are released.
Besides Carmack has already gone on record that he dreams of the next gen consoles having a whopping 2GB of RAM.

Which year is the rumor mill estimating for the consoles? The Xbox/PS4 that is. 2015? Possibly 2014? I mean, it's not like we're talking this year or the next here, and we all know how quickly this technology advances. With that in mind, I'd say 2GB would be a huge mistake. 4GB of RAM and 2GB of video memory should be considered the minimum for these things. And even at that point they'd still be *far* behind the high-end PC at that time, possibly even behind the mainstream PC market.

Oh. I can't predict what will happen in 4 years from now, I was talking about the amount of RAM I would expect new consoles to have if they were released soon; in 2012 (like the Wii 2 will). For my predictions for the year 2015 ask me in 2014

Don't think like that. It's irrelevant of how much memory PCs have. Gaming rigs had 2GB of Ram in 2006, the PS3 released in the same year had only 256mb of Ram. That's 8 times less the amount of RAM.
Don't expect consoles to have as much RAM as PCs, it's pointless, you said it yourself new consoles are expected to be released in 2014+ which means the current ones did just fine for MS and Sony despite their shortcomings.
Besides a console with 4GB of Ram will have 16 times more memory available than the PS3, that's quite a huge step up.

Well, for 2012 I think I can agree that 2GB of RAM would be likely.
Anyway, while I agree it's largely irrelevant how much RAM most PC users will have at the time, and while 4GB would certainly be a huge step up from the 256MB(512 total) the consoles currently have, one must also consider that these things will likely be there until well into 2020. And though MS and Sony might have been happy with the way the current consoles have performed, I'm sure developers/publishers will be pushing for more RAM and video memory so they have less restrictions in terms of design, not to mention being able to use better textures.

Plus, developers will want easier cross-platform development methods, so expect the next generation of consoles to be extremely close to high end PC performance levels.
It just makes sense! |
