Quote: |
Originally launched in Nov. 2002 but shut down three years later (in Dec. 2005) Turbine announced that Asheron’s Call 2 has returned!
Turbine has opened up a new server for anyone who has an active Asheron’s Call subscription to play Asheron’s Call 2 for free! Although the devs would have loved to revisit some of their old characters with you, they were not able to bring over any of your old characters. They do, however, present this new Asheron’s Call 2 server, Dawnsong, to all active Asheron’s Call players with a paid subscription or who purchase an ACTD retail key and subscribe.
What does this mean to you?
Below is a link to the Asheron’s Call 2 client installer so you may get the game up and running. This will provide access to the new Dawnsong server. Although the server has passed Turbine's initial tests, they have a lot of monitoring and tweaking to do to the game environment and want to ensure that the players understand that. This game service will be provided as a beta for all players with an active Asheron’s Call account. That said, the game server is currently up and running. So join Turbine for a nostalgic trip back to a Dereth where the golden age was not interrupted.
If you are an active paid AC1 subscriber there will be no need to create a new account for Asheron’s Call 2; you will simply log into the Asheron’s Call 2 game using your current Asheron’s Call credentials.
Please note that this is a beta, the environment might have some known issues that Turbine will be working on. The friend’s list functionality, for example, will not be available when this new server goes into beta. As can happen during a beta release, the server might be taken down for maintenance or troubleshooting at some inconvenient times if deemed necessary.

Actually it was the opposite I think. They bought all the rights to Asheron's Call from MS and migrated everything from microsoft's servers years ago. I'm not sure about AC2 but they probably had it as well and just sat on it. Or maybe through some agreement with MS, couldn't do anything with it until now.
Asheron's Call was fun. But once they axed all of us advocates because of the Everquest lawsuits, I just didn't play anymore. Our accounts actually were all flagged as free until they switched back to Turbine a couple of years after that. But beyond that I just couldn't afford it at the job I was at then.
AC2 was a bomb though. They simplified everything and made it all "streamlined" like everything else today. They took out everything that was fun about the original. What they should have done was just revamped the original with the graphics engine of AC2.

very much so. I remember getting this way back when, hoping for ...well asherons call 2 , got some derpy linear shit... *does not compute*.
Would love to play a ac1 remake with that engine today though, do remember the game looked quite good for its time. and ac1 = <3

Quote: | As of August 2014, Asheron’s Call and Asheron's Call 2 will no longer charge a subscription fee for players. The last payments will be processed on June 31st, making July the final “paid” month. Note that this means some players will technically receive some portion of July free as a result, as we have decided to absorb the cost and not run partial payments to cover it. Other important information for the transition:
After the transition, new accounts can be created with a one-time $10 purchase through our normal sign-up page
We will no longer be performing MSN Zone migrations after May 31st (click here for more information regarding MSN Zone Migrations)
Any inactive subscriptions that players wish to access after the transition will require a one-time activation fee of $10 via the myaccount website
Note that after the transition, help requests will only be available regarding harassment issues or account assistance with the $10 one-time activation purchase.
The AC forums will remain up and available
We also wanted to provide an update regarding “community” servers. Our current plan is to offer the first player run server packages and to open up our player run server sub-forums by the end of the year. Our first offering will be a basic AC1 server and client download. We expect the first offering to be light on documentation, as it is intended for enthusiasts with experience in setting up servers and dealing with networking. While set up instructions will be offered on these new sub-forums, this initial offering will be intended to be used in conjunction with the forums to allow the community to begin the process of running servers and creating documentation for that process. |
Well 10 bucks for one time deal for both games and no sub
I am more interested in this the player run server packages.

2 had great potential and it did grow on me, was a good game after you got into it, I guess it was slow for me to appreciate due to playing AC1 since beta and 7yrs after the fact
But classic AC1? fuck yeah! with no bot stuff for vendors full on player help only etc.
I can envision a pvp server like darktide classic appearing soon

Man I miss doing the late night gatherings to teach each other magics with the tapers and shit, magic was so strong before the dude made the taper configuration helper and the widgets. My Ice bolt VI and Fire Bolt would beat the shit out of anything. After that it's main damage fell by 200 or so.
I had first created a melee character as I thought it was like normal rpg's. Then realized I was super gimped because I had not trained Item magic and could not bind nor port back, except by running....So much nostalgia lol.
AC2 was ok but it lacked the feel of AC1, it felt like it tried to make it derp by becoming mainstream and make everything a fucking chore like on neverquest.

Same here, if possible be best if someone brought it to pre expansion level and ran the server, for maximum nostalgia.
