I just started getting back into my POE save again and of course the controls are remapped (along with everything else)

Question: why do they set arrows as defaults for moving the camera instead of WASD in RTS/RPGs like this? What benefit is there? I was thinking that the numpad is closer, so you can switch certain things around quicker, but I use my right hand for that anyway. If I have to use arrows, I have to shift the entire keyboard over so my left hand is in the right place and then function keys and everything else are so far away. Not great when you're in fights and want quick/near instant access.

Worse are the games that do this where you cannot remap keys.

I just use the mouse to pan around the camera although yeah they do tend to favor the arrow keys.

Of course for some RPG hybrids you just control the camera tilt this way and not the movement though the scroll wheel on the mouse tends to have that function too if needed although for gameplay you'd usually be playing in a pretty zoomed out view.
(Aside from Sacred 2 with it's expansion adding a very configurable camera view, that one I played as a third person RPG now that was different. Razz )

A throwback to the origins of the genre perhaps? In POE's case, some sort of Sawyerian mandate perhaps?
