Heavy Rain
The origami killer

  • Platform: PlayStation 3
  • Developer: Quantic Dream
  • Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
  • Aspect ratio(s): 720p
  • Release date: February 23rd 2010
  • Genre: Interactive Drama
  • Mode(s): Single-player

Description
Quote:
"Heavy Rain is about normal people who have landed in extraordinary situations. I wanted a much more personal story. The first thing that came to my mind, as a father of two little boys, was that the main theme should simply be a father's love for his son. This is not a game about saving the princess or the world. It's purely about a father's love. The main story will revolve around four different characters, and we're putting the spotlight on their perceptions. The question 'what is good and what is evil' is the key here, that will be just a matter of viewpoint...I believe heavily in moral choices, I'm going to use them A LOT. They're not about being good or bad, but about finding the right balance." - David Cage

Reception
Quote:
Eurogamer.net - 9/10
"While it is an intricate game that deserves to be debated for a long time, it is also a simple one to enjoy: a thrilling mystery, cleverly composed, and unlike anything else you will play this year. It may also be the only game you play this year where pulling the trigger makes you really feel something, and I can think of no greater compliment."

Kotaku.com
"Heavy Rain is a strong effort by Quantic Dream. It succeeds as a game that doesn't need the constant killing and chaos that so many video games depend on to be interesting. It may ultimately be a murder mystery and an exploration about the lengths to which players might push the characters they control. But Heavy Rain is, at its frequent best, a game about emotion and subtlety, a game that doesn't condemn choices as bad but instead allows them to be different, allows them to be meaningful and allows the player to feel. This is a game for grown-ups or anyone who wants to feel like one."

IGN.com - 'Outstanding' 9/10
"It'll take you a couple hours to get into the meat of the experience and for things to really pick up, but once it does, you'll be on the edge of your seat until the end and you won't want to put the controller down. In other words, if you stick with it, Heavy Rain will give you a ride like you rarely see in games"

Yes, but that was from the 2006 E3 I believe, it was more of a technology demo if I'm not mistaken.

indeed. Back then it was really just a tech demo and not even an announced game or anything.
Noone knew if the tech demo would eventually turn into a game and if it would be called heavy rain and if the tech demo would have anything to do with the game.

I've not heard any announcement regarding a PC release, as far as I'm aware this is still very much a PS3 exclusive. And regarding these being gameplay shots, if you've ever played MGS4 on the PS3 and remember Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy it's really no great leap.

They are going to show footage of the game running at the conference. Can't wait. Hopefully it's not a big disappointment, could do with something other than Little Big Planet to look forward to - especially with Team ICO's project so fucking far away.

It's games, and developers, like this that make me want a PS3. I freaking LOVED Omikron and Fahrenheit and it's a damned shame Quantic Dream are now a "PS3 only" company - but fair play to them. I hope, for PS3 owners, that this game lives up the company reputation for greatness.

Indeed, the graphics are amazing. In truth as a 'gameplay' shot it was merely a quick-time-event, I was hoping to see more walking around and other elements of gameplay featured in Fahrenheit. I especially liked the dialogue from the previous game, and the fact it was time limited (wasn't enough of that in my opinion, and too much QTE stuff).

...in fact, if anything it was a more revolutionary design approach to dialogue in games than mass effects oft-praised (badly) re-wording and arranging everything on a circle deal.

"Yes, of course, there will be a demo," he said, adding that it will likely not contain any elements of the main storyline. "We've spent a lot of time working on the story this time ... And I think it's a very unusual story for a videogame, so I think people will be quite surprised." Cage also noted that what we've seen so far is a separate episode and not related to the main storyline.

Cage also hinted that Heavy Rain DLC could be trickling out in the near future. "This is something it's really too early to talk about, but it's definitely a possibility," he said, adding, "You can tell any story with this interface, because it's entirely contextual."

If there's one place his speech seems to differ, it's when he mentions wanting the game to be "accessible to a broad audience." In some circles, that's code for wanting to sell more copies, but for Cage it seems to come from the desire to simplify the interface and reduce confusion. Case in point: Movement in Heavy Rain doesn't come from the analog stick; it comes from holding down the right trigger (R2), "like in a racing game," says Cage. "Simple. You never get lost. Pressing the button always makes you move forward." The newly freed left analog stick, then, controls your character's head -- and serves as the steering wheel, essentially.

While button-movement seems strange at first, it solves one of Indigo Prophecy's key control issues. Because that game relied so heavily on cinematic camera angles, as the view changed players often found themselves turning around unintentionally; the camera would shift before they could orientate themselves to the new perspective. With button-movement, that problem disappears

You still interact with the world around you using the right analog stick (to knock on a door, for instance), but now you make many choices with the Sixaxis' tilt sensor. Walk up to a door and the game will give you three dialogue choices, which you select by physically moving your controller toward them. "What is interesting in this interface is the fact that you are not stuck when you want to talk," says Cage. "In most games, when you want to talk, you enter a cut-scene with fixed cameras, and there's nothing you can do. But here we can move and talk and interact at the same time, like in real life." Using a similar interface, you can pull up a short list of your character's thoughts at any time by holding down L1 and moving the controller to select between them, the idea being that you can ask your character what they are thinking as a way to gain clues or extra information about what's occurring around them.

Was there ever a PC version announced? All I've ever seen is that it was PS3 exclusive right from the start :-\

I think you might be misreading it, mate. I just checked Wiki and it says "ORIGINALLY planned as a PC title" and then mentions the two versions (with and without PhysX hardware) - but then says how it was made PS3 exclusive.

We already knew that, it was part of the info Sony poster about ages ago. Such a goddamn shame too, as Omikron and Fahrenheit are two of my fave games and I was hoping for a 360 or PC version Sad

Same, mate! Fahrenheit is an absolute work of art and when I heard that Quantic Dream's newest game as a "PS3 Only" title (just like the upcoming Infamous) --- I nearly cried. If there's any game that would prompt me to buy a PS3, it was either Heavy Rain or - surprisingly - Eye of Judgement Very Happy

I wouldn't say it's a work of art, the story turns to shit 2/3 of the way through.

Actually I love it and on other hand I hate it ...

Love for everything had to offer but when just as you said when the story took 90 degrees change somewhere around 2/3 way through I went on rage ...

Srsly.... The game itself is so fucking perfect work of art but the scenes like the one in the museum (running away from that black puma or whatever and generally involving sth like aztecs into it issss wayyy too much for this game) or even with yellow glowing "Guy from the universe" kinda ruined that game. But still I beat it atleast 5 times Smile

I never managed to see Farhenheit as a real game. When i first heard about it, i was very enthousiastic because I loved The Nomad Soul, but this one was very disapointing. Press the correct button at the correc ttime? Please, that's not a game. If i want to do that, i play some guitar hero.

Quantic Dreams real masterpiece will always be Omikron: The Nomad Soul for me. It had real gameplay (fps, 3rd person adventure, roaming city, fighting) that didn't consist of pressing a button once in a while and it also had a great story. I loved it.

I stil managed to play farhenheit because i liked the story, but as stated above, it took a wrong turn at 2/3 of the game.

I'm looking forward to Heavy Rain because i like the atmosphere and the mystery that hangs around it, but i really hope there will be more to the game than just QTE.

Just bring us a sequel to the nomad soul (there are rumors that omikron 2 will be quantic dreams game after heavy rain)

What I would say to breaking down a games mechanics like that is it's a pretty disingenuous way of describing it as a whole. Fallout wasn't this hugely complex game if you think about it in the strictest terms - it's just a series of scripts and paths you can walk down but as a whole the illusion works because of great writing and variety.

The method used in Fahrenheit wasn't the problem. When we played the demo we had aspirations of each and every action having a tangible consequence, thinking we were now playing a quirky, original, cat and mouse chase where you play both the cat and the mouse. In reality it didn't work like that, and the choices were arbitrary - rarely having much if at all long or short term impact. That was the problem, not the method in which you controlled your character or interacted with others. If you had a more tangible input into the world and the unfolding plot then the way in which you interacted would not be the focal point.

Maybe I'm alone in this but I'm secretly hoping these sorts of games take off in a big way - but I'm a huge fan of those 'choose your own adventure' type novels so maybe I'm in the minority.

imho this is just Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy 2.0 which was a great game.
here are some tidbits:
the game will feature 4 characters if one of them dies you can still complete it with the rest of the three.
sony will announce the release date on E3

as for a 360 version I really don't think there will be one or maybe 1/2-1 year later

Don't expect it because this one of the sony's ace cards. They have invested money in a lot of exclusives titles to sell more ps3.
