|
 |
Hi there, got 2 questions.
It's time to retire my trusty gtx 560, so i settled for gtx 1060. After looking all kinds of reviews... all the 1060, even the OCed are kinda ... the same anyway in the end. I think i settled for gigabyte WINDFORCE OC 6GB. I have read some nice things about gigabyte G1 gaming too.. but... are the extra buck really worth it ? (all the different 1060s are pretty much all bench marked +/- 1-3 fps no matter the versions)
Also the second reason i chose the WF is that it has a 6 pin power connector while the G1 has 8 pins - my psu has up to 2x 6 pins but no 8 pins... so.. yeah. That leads me to my second question - is it time to retire my PSU and get another one ?
Is there an advantage to get a new PSU if my current one is still doing a fine job ? (aside lacking 8 pins gpu connector and having perma-attached floppy disk connectors that will be never used again xD). I had mine for over 7 years with zero problems - CHIEFTEC GPS-650AB A (http://ru.gecid.com/power/chieftec_gps-650ab_a/?s=all - it is so old i couldnt even get any other link aside that russian one). Will i actually gain anything if i buy something newer or should i stick with a decade old PSU that still works fine ? What advantage would that be compared to an old PSU in good condition ?

simply cause i wouldnt work with adapters -> would buy a new psu
though the 1060 needs less ampere on the 12v rail than the 560 (20vs24) BUT the 560 had 2x6pin connectors right? that fits with the values on the rusky page which says 16A per 12V rail. but using a 1060 with a single 6pin (or 6 to 8 pin adapter) with a 16A rail is shit

Coming from someone with an old failing PSU around that age: yup why not.
No need to fool around with adapters and such. Most lose quite a bit of efficiency over those years.

I can honestly advise on gigabyte g1 1060.
I've been reading on which one to get and got this one and I am super happy.
But I think most are nice except evga which overheats
It's only 60 c when gaming and fans dont spin in desktop mode. And even when they do in stress, its very quiet.
the ONLY problem I have with this card is extremely loud coil whine. It is mostly not there with vsync but without it it shreads brains.
but according to reddit, this is issue with gtx 1xxx cards totally no matter what brands mostly

Age is more than enough reason to switch to a newer PSU, 7 years is a long long time.

why should you replace stuff which works just fine? (ok in that case it needs replaced cause of the rails) yes hardware ages, yes it might not be as perfect as it was when it came out BUT actually proper older psus are much more reliable than any new stuff you can buy today cause every fucking oem outsourced their manufacturing to cheap shit factorys nowadays

But seriously now, I'll bet that that 7yo is most likely using mostly (completely?) old ass electrolytic capacitors as opposed to solid ones. That would be more than enough reason, especially with seven years of capacitor degradation fucking up your shit

I tried a couple 1060`s i think they`re mostly the same, super quiet and never goes over 60C.
I ended up with the Gainward 1060 GS 6GB and it seems of high quality, the zotac seemed like a cheap thing by comparison.
100% happy and no coil whine or anything(Vsync or not) else of notice.

PSU is the only thing where you dont skimp out, i would not use 7 year old PSU even tho it works "just fine". It is also chieftec, a.k.a "takes PC with it when it goes off".

dude just NO! you are wasting a) money and b) electricity cause it wont work in its best spectrum!
you wont go for sli and for everything else a proper 550w psu is more than enough! even with an massive oced i7 + 1080 you wont need much more than a round 400 watt for your complete system. 550w is more than enough!

That 650W chieftec will likely handle less charge than any good 550W PSU out there, even if it was on its first day working
550W/600W is more than enough, go for it

I went with an EVGA Supernova G2. Check some reviews out. Thought it was pretty good for the price.

So far i got my eyes on:
Seasonic SS-620GB 620W - this thing looks ok. - good brand - tier 2 of a certain psu tier list xD
BUT
is not modular (can't find the modular version anywhere)
it is ages old as a model..
but i will take any recommendations..

Even if it's an old-ish model that would still be a top choice, but if you want to go modular then go modular
