I love the X games apart from a couple of things:
- No newtonian physics (I still love the feeling from I-War, X2/3 and I bet this has ships that feels like they float on water like a soap)
- Horrible character animations and voice acting

agreed, although I don't mind the physics too much as I'm more interested in the whole managing and building aspect of the game and not too much into dogfighting with smaller vessels.
I think it's cool that the developers stayed true to the series with X3, and didn't dumb it down. The X games are definitely for hardcore space sim fans and will scare off any new players without enough determination to actually get into the game and find out how everything works.
They could have also taken the Elder Scrolls route and go from complex to oversimplified.
there's no denying that the character animations and voice acting sucks big time.
it's ridiculously bad, just like the character designs of the alien races.
I hope one day they'll come up with something better.
now boron show how to fight!

I'd prefer they just left the story aspects out and focus on spit and polish as I never play story mode anyway.

That's what killed it for me. The voice acting was just so utterly horrid. It really destroyed the immersion. If only they could inject the scale and grandness of X3 into a game like Freelancer it'd be a masterpiece.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Hmm horrible character voice acting, well it wasnt great but..
Freelancers wasnt much better lol, wooden to say the least. Converstations would just end abrubtly which made it feel even more wooden.

x3 was ok. After a bunch of patches and additional mods. By that time everybody already had moved on to other games tho.
hope this ...version ... comes in a "ready-to-play" state ...

Woofuckinghoo!!!! I can't wait!
Now *this* is a game I'll be buying! I've bought every X game from the very beginning .. and aside from the weak, almost non-existent, story in X2 -- I've loved them all!

Hope they fix the whole mouse-view thing. I hate how, when turning, the ship will suddenly come to a grinding halt once you stop moving the mouse. They should make it smooth like in other space sims.

I could never get into X3, they need a tutorial for it. I was lost for so long trying to figure everything out.

What always stopped me in getting far in X3 was the lack of goals. I mean, it's fun in the beginning, when I have nothing, but by the time I reached the stage where I had a couple of Untiverse Traders and a few complexes running, I always ran out of things to do.
I know, next step is to get a destroyer, carrier, etc, but why bother? They can only be used to take enemy sectors, but there's no real gain in it. I mean, you can't take Khaak sectors, as they're too strong and enemies respawn almost instantly. You can take a Xenon sector, but there's no real reason to do so... there's nothing in them. If only they contained some unique asteroids with ultra yields or something that'd make an offensive worthwile... and I'm more confortable in my small and fast fighter anyway (bigger ships are a pain to fly).
All in all, the big ships were only good as eye candy (with no real reason to own one other than to look cool), and if this doesn't change in X3:TC, then I really don't see myself playing it for more than a couple of hours. But I seriously hope the do change this/add some rewards for or reason to use your fleet.
Another thing: OOS combat sucked big time, as ships that vaporized enemies in-sector got butchered by the same enemies while you were out of sector. It was mainly because while in-sector combat played out normally, OOS (out-of-sector) combat was decided by the numbers, only the shield strength and weapons of a ship mattered. This really limited the usefulness of various ship types, as I could only be in one sector at a time (obviously...), and interceptors, and scouts (M4, M5 classes, that had lower shields, fewer guns, but way better speed, smaller frame, and awesome maneuverability), that murdered enemy heavy fighters in-sector became borderline useless in OOS, where most of the game's battles played out.
So the game really came down to using 2 combat ship types for every task (out of the possible 7) for me. And that's not cool. It's a pity, as there's so much potential in this game...

Even if they do, they'd do a retarded 360 "go from here to there shoot him and her" type of crap, nothing as deep as X3.

I don't know, I thought Privateer 2 was pretty awesome actually. Had a very decent storyline too, if I remember correctly. Flight model was good for a non-newtonian game. I hadn't played the first one when I tried it though, so that probably matters a bit.
Freelancer had great atmosphere and such, but lost alot of points with both the miniature planets and the arcade style it went for.
Elite is great in many ways, but outside of the main quest there's not all that much to do except getting more and more cash( sort of like the X games, but they offer station building and fleet management). It by far has the best realized game world though; it's priceless the way you can fly down planetside, collect gas for fuel, etc. Elite + X's Station/Fleet Management + Good Storyline = Best Space Sim Ever?

Privateer 2 wasn't a bad games. Just it didn't hold me as the first that's all. Maybe Privateer 1 just burned me out and that made me feel less excited about the 2nd part. But if you never played the first I can see why you liked it, it's definatly not a bad game.

i like the features, but the control schemes couldnt play with a mouse properly... i mean, without stand up the mouse again and again to chase a spaceship.
