For a week or two now I've noticed that every time I pause a Youtube video, either embedded or on Youtube itself, a bottom "recommendations bar" pops up. I can close it, but it's always back the next time I hit pause.

Two questions:

1. What is this fucking abomination called? Obviously NOT a recommendations bar according to Google.

2. How do I purge this fucking thing with holy hellfire so that I never have to lay eyes on it again?

Try adding an extension to Chrome (assuming you care to use Chrome as your browser) called:

uBlock Origin

As an alternative you can consider:

uBlock Adblock Plus

Already using uBlock Origin and NoScript on Firefox.

uBlock has a element picker you can use, right click and select block element and then you should just be able to click on the bottom bar and a couple of cosmetic filters should appear for you to select from.

Use those and the preview button to remove what you want from the site in question whether it's some advert or some other element you want to be rid of, it's very useful. Smile

EDIT: Ah I see that they're in the HTML5 video itself, perhaps it's part of the annotations system then? That can be toggled in the Youtube settings though for whatever reason it occasionally toggles back on again after a while.

Might be something else too, I've never seen that bar before myself so it's new to me.
(Could still work with UBlock though, it's pretty flexible.)

EDIT: As for UBlock's filter list I prefer to toggle on everything besides the alternative EasyList without element hiding rules and the Fanboy+Easylist merge option.

Country specific choices can be set how you want, I block Swedish, German and Chinese.
(Chinese being the 3DM and Ali213 websites mostly. Razz )

It most definitely IS new - or I'm the most oblivious person on the planet - because I haven't noticed it until the last two weeks or so.

I'm aware of uBlock Origin's nifty little "element picker" feature - I use it quite often and love it!

Annotations are off as I use another add-on called YouTube High Definition to toggle those off as well as always auto-play at 1080p and a few other settings with one click. I've scoured that one and it's not the cause / doesn't offer a solution.

I've never really messed with uBlock's filter list (never had a need to - haven't seen an ad on sites/youtube/twitch for decades) apart from a time or two when I was trying to bypass those anti-adblocker scripts a few sites use. Never met any success there, as the one solution that MIGHT have worked required me to allow Javascript to run, which is a no no.

Back to the drawing board I suppose. And damn whoever implemented this fucking bar! Crying or Very sad

I'm curious. Does it appear if you browse YouTube in Incognito mode, even with your Ad blocker extension of choice activated?

Yes it does. Neither incognito mode in Chrome or private mode in Firefox seems to have any impact on it.

It pisses me off as well. I use the entire surface to click for play/pause. Ever since that fucking bar appeared I keep getting redirected because I accidentally click something. I guess that was intentional by design. It's not there for me when watching videos on youtube though, only when they are embedded on other pages.

Just curious again.

Did you happen to receive, and install the recent much-debated Windows 10 "Creator update"? If so, can you remember experiencing this before that update?

and...

Is this issue isolated to YouTube, the desktop version - and you've not seen it occur elsewhere at all (IE other sites not associated with YouTube)?

One way to gather data on this for us. If you force the YouTube dekstop version of the site and service into flash player mode, for example by disabling your preferred browser's (IE Chrome) HTML5 using a browser extension, say, for example something like the "Disable Youtube™ HTML5 Player" (Chrome), after adding the extension, do a full restart of the browser re-visit YouTube like you normally would ::

If you managed to reject HTML5:
Is the bar still appearing for you in a way an Ad block extension is unable to deny it?

I have this too, cursing each time I hit one of the thumbnails.. Also - since about 2-3 weeks, both prior to Creators update and after. Weird thing is - it only shows on embedded players, not on YT itself.

It also shows up during the last seconds of playback, super retarded, especially on videos which are really short. It just hides shit.

Is it? It keeps you watching you tube. It recommends you what you could watch next.

If anyone's still struggling with that: add
Code:
##.ytp-pause-overlay

to your filters in ublock / adblock. Seems to work

What what? I didn't block the bar by other means (additional extensions etc.) and finally found a solution based on adblocks So I thought I'd share.
