Project IGI Developers Buy Back IP
Quote:

GamesIndustry.biz reports that Norwegian studio Artplant has purchased the intellectual property for Project IGI from Square Enix. Artplant is a studio formed by former members of Innerloop, designers of the first Project IGI in 2000 and the 2003 sequel to the first-person shooter. The company is not announcing a new game in the series yet, but that seems to be the intent, since Square Enix still holds publishing rights to the first two games, so this will probably not lead to any remastered rereleases.

Best known for Battlestar Galactica Online, Artplant says this deal moves them away from projects like that, as they quote CEO Jack Wulff saying it "marks the shift in strategy from making games for publishers to producing and owning our own games." He says they look forward to "creating new experiences for fans of the old game and introducing the IP to a new audience."

Tbh the original game was never really good.
The thing that made the game interesting for ppl was
that it had a gfx engine that was meant for a flight sim soyou had a high view distance and AI that could hea shot you from 3000000000000000000kms with an Ak 47.

fun times (GRANAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADA)

*gets semi-excited and googles Artplant*
Their games are cartoonish simplistic pseudo-Moba's

As an appreciator of both the original game and sequel (not masterpieces, but still impressive technologically and and entertainment-wise), I'll be incredibly happy if the potential attempt will end up being a gratifying one, but I'm just going to assume that it won't. Razz

I remember IGI, I had played it quite a lot. I remember barracks that spammed out soldiers infinitely and you had to disable the alarm. I also remember having some coll guns, a Dragunov, right? And it had a cool story, James Bond esque kinda. With a female coordinator.

I remember it required some strategy, for example a mission in an airport was tough if you just ran around.

It had good gfx and ran good on my Pentium 3 450mhz and Voodoo 3 2000. Although on a map that had snow the framerate was less. Never really played the sequel.

One of the few games I have finished (the original one, that is).

I don't remember it to be memorable, but I still enjoyed it.

I remember liking SoF more though.

Project IGI: We're Going In is in development
Norwegian studio Artplant confirmed that a new IGI game is happening

Quote:
We may soon be hearing more about it, however, as a report on Norwegian site Pressfire has revealed that a new IGI game is on the way.

The translation comes via Google and is thus a little rough, but the article subtitled "Project IGI resumes" states that the bulk of funding in the most recent round of NFI grants will go to "a kind of comeback for the Norwegian classic from 2000, Project IGI." The new game is being developed by Norwegian studio Artplant, which was founded by members of original IGI developer Innerloop Studios, and will feature "the freedom the series has become known for." (There was a sequel released in 2003 called IGI 2: Covert Strike.)

Artplant chief Jack K. Wulff confirmed that the new IGI is in development, but said, "We don't have much to announce at this point, other than that the game will be called IGI - We're Going In," a play on the original title that suggests a focus on (or at least inclusion of) co-op multiplayer. Artplant had previously hinted on Twitter that David Jones, the hero of the first two games, will be back for round three.

NFI (Norwegian film institute) are giving out 7 million NOK to 8 new Norwegian games. Artplant/IGI gets 2 of those millions! Maybe not that strange, the rest of the games seems to be indie games. Then again Owlboy was great, so could be worth the money Smile

I don't mind that its our tax money, we spend way more on books, opera and other cultural stuff I don't give a shit about.

Hmmm - at the time, they weren't bad games (although heavily flawed in areas) but we've come a long way since then. We now got quite a few open world games like Arma 3 so it surely can no longer wow people with vast distances. Games based on technological gimmicks as selling point tend to age pretty badly and Project IGI is no different.
