Pathfinder is one of the most popular pen-and-paper fantasy roleplaying games. It builds on more than 10 years of system development and had the largest open playtest in the history of tabletop gaming with the goal of creating an unparalleled fantasy roleplaying experience.
Pathfinder puts you in the role of a brave adventurer fighting to survive in a world beset by magic and evil!
Take on the role of a canny fighter hacking through enemies with an enchanted sword, a powerful sorceress blessed with magic by the hint of demon blood in her veins, a wise cleric of gods benevolent or malign, a witty rogue ready to defuse even the deadliest of traps or any of the countless other heroes. The only limit is your imagination!
The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game is an evolution of the 3.5 rules set of the world's oldest fantasy roleplaying game, designed using the feedback of tens of thousands of gamers just like you.

Narrative design by Chris Avellone
«I’m a Paizo fan, and a Pathfinder fan. I like the setting, the art style, the adventure paths, the card game, and the iconic characters. I’ve enjoyed playing Pathfinder with my friends (we used to be part of an Ocean’s-11 style game), and I’ve enjoyed the comics, the world, and the overall setting. I’m excited by the prospect of bringing Pathfinder to the computer RPG world, and hope gamers will enjoy playing in the Pathfinder universe.»

Interesting. Obsidian got the license to make Pathfinder games back in 2014, so while I expected to see a Pathfinder RPG, I didn't think it'd be developed by someone else. But if they're making a cRPG instead of the card-game made by Obsidian, I'm totally for it.
Chris is a senior narrative designer on Pathfinder: Kingmaker. As a veteran of the industry he has worked on titles by Black Isle Studios, including Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2 and the Icewind Dale series. He has also worked on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Fallout: New Vegas. Recently, he has completed work on Beamdog Studios’ Planescape: Torment – Enhanced Edition and Arkane Studios’ Prey.
We have gathered the community’s most burning questions for Chris about his involvement with Pathfinder: Kingmaker and his thoughts about the Pathfinder universe. Enjoy!
I got the impression from the early info that it was going to be fairly short/small scale. 40/80 hours is extremely ambitious given the money they are asking for. Either they expect Avellone to bring in a few million by himself, or they also have money from outside (My.com one would think).
While the "display all equipped items" is pretty cool, it doesn't seem like the wisest investment of their resources. Although I guess the team could work on that side of things while they sorted out stuff like the story.
At least the graphics is completely adorable. Reminds me of Allods Online, which was a mindless grindfest, but the visuals were an improved, modern variant of WoW.
It's not the balancing that made PoE combat boring, it's just questionable design. You can have very good balance while retaining a very fun combat system (for instance, you can have abilities that are situationally-OP but other times very weak, or abilities that require a certain build etc.).
If you don't believe me, look at D3's character classes: on a global scale, the're all very closely balanced between each other, and each even has several viable endgame builds (of course, some builds are better for some situations, and that's fine).
A project like this with so many question marks asks for a prudent approach, though whenever I read the isometric party-based RPG + Avellone combo I can't help but feeling that tingle
I'm not familiar with the franchise, but fingers crossed for an in-game meaningful and inspired world, characters and combat system - without silly generic aftertastes (well, not too many at least!)
The franchise is basically evolved D&D 3.5 edition. It's even called D&D 3.75 sometimes, because it's almost the same ruleset, with some slight adjustments and a different world. It was released by Pazio under Open Game License - a license previous DnD systems used, which allowed other companies to change and re-release the rules for their tabletop games. They did it in reaction to Wizards of the Coast releasing D&D 4th edition in a different, more restrictive law framework (and with rules that were so different, they divided the community). Pazio is also a company with long D&D ties - they published magazines featuring loads of new rules and content. In short: think Neverwinter Nights 2 or Temple of Elemental Evil as far as combat, classes and systems go, with a different, but adequately similar setting. So there's plenty of reasons to be excited
Yeah as Aquma says, Pathfinder is a more balanced version of D&D 3.5 basically.
My favourite thing is how they improved Barbarians, they gave them rage powers which are special feats they get when raging.
There are some really interesting ones like Superstitious, which makes you have to save against all spells (even friendly ones), but gives you a massive save bonus against them. Leads to some hilarious situations on the tabletop.
@Aquma and Steelone: cheers, that does sound promising indeed
Judging from their mission the scope is an ambitious one as well (going for a proper implementation with no apparent compromises), count myself officially aroused.
Really glad for them, this has potential to be a fantastic game (of the genre).
But didn't pledge, I can't afford any quality time for this kind of games anymore
24hrs left and 780K, so they will pretty comfortably unlock the archetypes stretch goal at 800K. Even with slacker backer pledges after the KS finishes though, I think the 900K stretch goal of an Avellone-written goblin companion (sounds a bit like Deekin from NWN) is probably out of reach unless they get a massive influx of pledges today.
