There are plenty of ways for them to fuck up the execution of this, but for now I'm going to stay positive. I'm expecting a 1.5 version of what we had in singleplayer.

Coming to Xbox One and Windows 10 as an Xbox Play Anywhere game.
Features
Play as a Community of Individuals in an Open-World Adventure

• Use your community’s unique array of individuals to forge a path through the game that is personal to you. Your choices shape the identity of your community, ensuring that no two stories are alike.
• Explore an open, simulated world filled with dynamic zombie and human enemies, friendly survivors to recruit into your community, and valuable resources and gear necessary to keep your people alive.
RPG Progression Systems for Individuals, Base, and Community
• Develop each survivor’s traits and skills to improve their capabilities and strengthen your community.
• Collect resources to build and fortify your base, unlocking crucial new facilities and valuable community options along the way.
• Elevate your favorite survivors to leadership roles in your community by heeding their advice and completing their goals, and unlock new community benefits and objectives that suit your leader’s ideals.
• Manage the relationships and goals of your survivors to build a strong community that has a lasting impact on the future of your world.
Four-player Co-op Multiplayer
• Play solo, or for the first time ever in the “State of Decay” franchise, with up to three of your friends.
• Invite friends to join your game, or drop into theirs. Work together as you explore the deadly post-apocalyptic environment, watching each other’s backs and sharing the rewards of your accomplishments.
• Each player maintains command of their own personal community and roster of characters.

Yes, but only if you don't own the original, or if you're a pirate, or if you have more money than sense to just throw money at an obvious patch.

I played the first one many times (not the military base dlc thing). When you escape, it starts over but it gets more difficult every time, less resources and cars for example.
Miss the option to start on like ng+6 instead of having to grind playthroughs because it wasn't fun, as the playthroughs very gradually amp up difficulty it is not very apparent.

There's simply no escape for us, the WinStore beast will keep haunting us even in our sleep. And we thought that our arch-enemy was the silly D...fools.
This is the real enemy, the permanent anti-consumer Sword of Damocles, and there's no way to avoid it without avoiding the games altogether

Hopefully like Prudi and Lolo said, the situation in their store will be so desperate that compromises will be made, although, they're so stubborn that I'm not sure it will actually happen xD

Playing State of Decay Breakdown again, sure enough its still clunky af; SoD2 is going to be a lot of fun. Expanding on the RPG elements of the characters and adding more ways to customize and improve home bases and outposts will be essential. I won't complain if there's a character creation process for the survivor you control initially.
What I didn't like though is that in multiplayer it seems that each player is in control of their own group of survivors. I'm not quite sure whether that means you'll have to stay in different home bases or not, but it'd make sense to build 1 big base, so I hope that's possible.
In terms of vehicles I hope we get to see tanks, buses, bikes; and that we get to customize vehicles, refitting them for the zombie apoc, with regards to armor padding, spikes and such.

@EternalBlueScreen
I extremely enjoyed the base game of SoD.
The one DLC were you played as army was not bad.
The other DLC where you have to survive as long as possible i only played for a bit, as i don't really like such a time consuming mode.
There "Definitve Edition" was pure shit though.
So my expectation for SoD2 are rather low already.
But the hope never dies, and i really wish that it turns out good anyways.

YOSE after a few updates is a better experience for me than the base game was, absolutely. Sure it has performance issues and graphical bugs; and sometimes characters and zombies clip into the ground or stairs leading up to a house for example.
I've played a few rounds of the 'survival' round based mode, where you start at level 1 and you're supposed to fix the RV and leave the map; only for it to reset (you do get to keep some heroes and gear) and it plops you back into the map with increased difficulty, less cars, less resources, more zombies etc.
The highest I've seen someone get to is level 87 and that's crazy; it must have taken a lot of time to get there. I'm just at level 3 now as I reinstalled.
I have one plan, that's getting to the largest base as quickly as possible. I could have escaped long ago at 3, but I just wanted to see if what I did in the base game still worked, and it does.
I notice more zombies and special zombies now than in the base game even on this early stage.
I think SoD 2 will be very similar to SoD in how it feels to play and I'm not expecting a huge difference in AI or a lot more and unique special zeds, but who knows. If you didn't enjoy more than the story I wonder if you'll like co-op, but in my opinion when co-op is introduced to this the fun-level will be a lot higher. Mainly because you get tired if being the only one actually doing important stuff while the AI sits at the base, or gets teleported into trouble so that you'll get a mission to save them.

They can keep trying all they want. At least Microsoft knows when to give up on a "system". They tried that games for Windows live and they took it down since it was such a failure. If people keep resisting this they'll finally see it's costing them money

Quote: | Undead CEO Jeff Strain said that the studio is well aware of the fan’s desire for a bigger and better world in the sequel and confirmed that the world is substantially large but did not share any specifics.
I know SoD fans are hungry for details on number and size of maps, regions, kilometers of playable area, etc, but we’re not quite ready for that. For now, suffice it to say that the playable area is substantially larger than State of Decay.
When asked about if player’s friends in the multiplayer decide to be unfriendly what kind of consequences the players will face. To this design director Richard Foge responded that State Of Decay is built around the consequences of player’s actions and players just can’t simply just attack other players.
He further added that there are different ways in which other players can be hostile to you as they can directly affect the simulation.
Strain further added that devs want to game to be fun and the core gameplay is built around “teamwork and cooperation”. Also, players will not be forced to stick together, they can get in a car and go anywhere they like.
We want it to be fun to play with your friends, so the design mechanics encourage teamwork and cooperation,” he told us. “That said, ‘encouraging’ is not the same as ‘forcing.’ You will be free to get in a car and go anywhere you like, just as you would if you were playing by yourself. |

State Of Decay 2 Dev Talks Larger World, Co-Op, Griefing, And More
Quote: | [...]
GameSpot: Are there any particular lessons that you took away from the first State of Decay that you were looking to improve upon?
Jeff Strain: Oh yeah... When we started working on State of Decay 2, we sat down and put everything into three buckets. We had [to think about] what are things that work well the players loved that we're gonna double down on, what are things that we want to innovate on and bring new things to it, and then what are things that didn't work well that we either need to completely overhaul or ax? Of those, the offline progression system was by far the most...the feature that players were most ready to see go, because the thing about State of Decay is, it's permanent.
The way that works is we have a contract with players, and that contract is: "If you die, it's your fault." It's not the game throwing some random thing at you. You have all the tools at your disposal to see the threat, to make your own decisions, and if you die, we want you coming away from it thinking, "Ah, if only I'd done X or Y!" Or, "Here's where I made the mistake or stayed out too long." The offline progression system kind of broke that, because that stuff could happen while you were logged out of the game. It violated the contract, and it didn't work well. That was probably the biggest area that we had to address.
[...]
I remember hearing previously that, if you wanted to screw with your friends, you could try to attract zombies or things like that. You could, in a way, grief your friends.
You can playfully grief each other yes. Can you line up and make a headshot on your friends? No, it's just not that kind of game. There are some great games out there that really focus on that hardcore PVP experience, but that's not what State of Decay's about.
[...]
Is it still coming to PC in addition to Xbox?
Yeah, it'll be on Windows 10 and Xbox One. That's what we're talking about today. It will support the Play Anywhere initiative: buy once, play on either platform, and players on both platforms can play with each other. |

I only read the quote because I don't want to give gamespot/ign any easy clicks. I definitely wouldn't mind full quotes of articles, one of us taking the plunge in order to copy/paste so the rest here don't have to get dirty.
No offline progression:
Good news.
No focus on hardcore pvp:
I still believe it should be possible to PvP. In zombie apoc there are humans versus humans as well, stealing supplies and such. I can rally behind that the focus has to be versus zombies though.
Cross platform:
Good, objectively speaking we should all play on the same platform: The PC.

Let’s talk about maps
Quote: | Hey, all, I’ve seen a lot of chatter about what everyone is hoping to see with a map. We’re finally far enough along that I can safely tell you: We are launching with THREE maps. Each roughly the size of the original. You should expect to see slightly different environments, definitely different landmarks and locations, different layouts lending themselves to different strategies, unique home sites, and even different mission types.
Why’d we do it that way? Well, primarily, because it makes the game more fun. It really feels like you’re moving from one small town to another, and creates a tremendous sense of immersion. And perhaps counter-intuitively, it makes the world feel even bigger. You know how on one map (even one three times the size as the original game’s) the longer you play, the more you start feeling deju vu with every mission? That’s less of an issue with separate maps. And see above about strategies and missions. Oh, and one more detail – the multiple map set up makes it easy to expand the world down the line, if you know what I mean.
Speaking of specifics, I KNOW you all are going to ask “but what can we take with us between maps?” About half of you skipped the previous paragraph just to see if I was going to tell you. Foge (for new survivors, that’s Richard Foge, the Design Director here at the Lab) says that the intent is for us to be able to take all of our people, and everything in our supply lockers and rucks. We’ll have all the vehicles parked in our home site parking spaces, along with whatever’s stored in the trunks. We’re also going to get at least a partial refund on what we sunk into building our facilities. That’s the intention, anyway. As always, specifics may change a bit as we get deeper into testing, so cover me later if I’ve got to make edits, will you? |
