TopWare Interactive unveils Raven's Cry, a pirate game in development at Octane Games for release in Q2 of 2012. The initial announcement is pretty sparse, but they are showing off the game at E3 this week, so we should expect more details shortly. In the meantime, here is the entire press release, which is oddly titled "Raven’s Cry: A pirate world without censorship":
TopWare Interactive and Octane Games will be releasing a game that finally doesn’t paint pirates as the funny and playful ones we have to come to accept in pop-culture, but rather the ruthless and blood thirsty portrayal of historical relevance. With the announcement of the release of TopWare’s next big title, Raven’s Cry, even real pirate fans will be shaking in their buckled boots.
The 17th century Caribbean unfortunately will not be starring a quirky, yet devilishly handsome and incredibly famous actor portraying the pirate life, but a man who fights with his own demons and morals, with only the memory of his butchered family to propel him into his destiny among the seas.
Raven’s Cry will offer players three different styles of gameplay, from 3rd person hack n’ slash, to helming a full-fledged pirate ship into battle, or navigating your way through the harsh waters on the world map.
Platform(s): PC
Genre: Action/Adventure
Publisher: TopWare Interactive
Developer: Octane Games
Release Date: Q2 2012

Yeah that's true for action games , there are some nice exceptions though when it comes to other genres, like Age of Pirates, Sid Meier's Pirates, Risen 2 etc
Raven’s Cry has been delayed since it was first shown to the media last year, and after analysing the game’s development, TopWare made the tough decision to reorganize the project. The core storyline and dark setting of the game will remain untouched, but additional features and a new open world will be implemented by the Polish team. In addition, Topware has kept a close eye on message boards and early feedback, and will be including a few interesting tweaks and features requested by pirate fans.
Alexandra Constandache CEO at TopWare Interactive: "Raven’s Cry has had our entire company excited from day one, and we can’t wait for the finished product. Sadly, production hasn’t moved forward in the way we wanted, so we had to make the tough decision to hand it over to the veterans at Reality Pump. Reality Pump has worked with us for twenty years on several games, including fan-favorite Two Worlds II. The experience the team gained while making the Two Worlds games has proven to be invaluable to their work on Raven’s Cry. We are looking forward to releasing a game that is not only entertaining, but also more than the typical "hero who saves the world" tale. The positive feedback we received at this year’s gamescom proved to us that we have made the right decision with this change, and to put it in Raven’s Cry terms, we are excited to finally reach the port we’ve set sail for."
TopWare Interactive announces release date for Raven`s Cry
In a joint announcement with Reality Pump, the TopWare Interactive AG has announced that the RPG adventure "Raven's Cry" will be released on 7th May 2014.
When you look into the depths of a chasm for long enough, that chasm will surely look into your depths ...
Gloomy yet paradise-like images describe a world full of betrayal, greed and brutality. Accompanied by sinister cutscenes, the thirst for revenge leads the main character into an open, free-roaming world. "Raven's Cry" is the story of Christopher Raven's personal vendetta - and never forgetting that bloody vendetta, he still has to find ways to supply himself and his crew with all the necessary resources and information. Following the cry of the raven, he oversteps every moral boundary, drawing a bloody trail through the Caribbean.
Tadeusz Zuber, Head of the Development Team: "The idea for Raven's Cry gives us the opportunity to create our very own image of the Caribbean and piracy, far removed from all the family idylls. Christopher is tormented by his own demons and external threats - and our goal is to make these realistic enough to be actually ‘felt' by the player. Christopher is a man trapped in the chains of his own demons - and the only way to break these chains, it seems, is the path of violence and revenge which he has chosen."
RPG elements with hook
"Raven's Cry" offers various RPG elements, so there will be a complex game skill system and modifications for all the ships in the game, which can be designed to influence the reputation of the individual sailor with the groups and enemies in the Caribbean. Christopher himself will continue to evolve in the course of the story, unlocking new abilities and weapons. His characteristic hook - as seen in the images - plays a vital role, especially in brutal close combat. Regardless of where Christopher's path leads him to obtain information or money, he will never become a shimmering hero who coincidentally saves the world. For him there's only one way out of his suffering and that is death ... either his own life or the lives of his enemies. The people around him are either for or against him.
"It was important for us to drive Christopher's sinister story on in a way that would enthrall players - but to give them more role-playing elements at the same time. He will constantly develop his character, his ships and his crew throughout the game and adapt it to his own personal style, which is somewhere between "Bad Ass and Bad Guy", says Alexandra Constandache, CEO at TopWare.
Animations and lip syncing looks ridiculously terrible in that video. Granted, it's from 2012, but somehow I doubt they'd fix it until 2014.
iirc that video is from pretty old build and they changed DEV. As for me i dont care about lip sincing too much and evn animations
i guess we will see more soon

I thought you were joking but holy Blackbeard, the resemblance is striking
Don't really like the idea of borrowing so much stuff from AC, what's the point. Just go ahead with your own ideas instead of shamelessly copy-pasting something else (and probably adding more bugs, too, because of the lower production values). Disappointing...but we'll see I guess.

What about the combat interface? Looks quite similar
Goddammit, I know that! Wasn't talking about the formula itself, what I meant was (and if you pay attention to all the details in the gameplay video posted by 7thunders, you'll see why), they literally copy-pasted the camera placement, reproduced the same stances, actions (rope swing, automatic finishing moves), mini-map style and general interface/icons.
The only thing that's different, is the climbing, which isn't fluid/dynamic but relies on pressing the on-screen button that triggers the animations (which is possibly even worse). I'm not trying to judge the game (yet), it's just an obvious observation.

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
