Last one was at least to some degree still an adventure game, but with every new one that comes out i fear any challenge will be gone and will end up with a Telltale cinematic experience, where you basically just click and the story goes on.

You mean The Testament of Sherlock Holmes? That was a good as fuck game, dude. Trying to piece the truth together .... not knowing if you are right or not .... fucking awesome!

The last one was Crimes and Punishments. I can't remember how it exactly worked in Testament but Crimes & Punishments did the investigative mechanics really well. I really enjoyed how each of the cases had multiple conclusions and how you couldn't be sure if you reached the correct one and that it really made you feel like you are interpreting the evidence and not just going through the motions.
The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is the first in this sub-series of third person Sherlock games, so that I guess. But if you don't mind it being first person and older start with Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper. I think that's where the game series started getting really cool.
Aw yiss, more Sherlock Holmes is always good. It's still developed by Frogwares, so that's positive as well. I don't think they'll ever go back to the old style, but as long as it stays Crimes and Punishment-y with the right balance between adventure and "modern cinematicness", it's fine.
@AkofC: What DarkRohirrim said! The order isn't important really, but they're all good games, with their differences
I pretty much liked all of them starting with The Awakened. Mystery of the Mummy was terrible and Silver Earring was decent at best but with Awakened the series started to lift off.
Looks great (especially like the improvement in the character profiling), but I'm not sure about the redesign of Watson and Holmes (especially the former )

Sounds like they got new voice actors too. They look younger here, maybe that's the case.
Stand-alone, for the most part as far as I know at least.
EDIT: I've only really played the two most recent ones though and a bit of one of the earlier games involving (parts of?) the Chuthulhu mythos of all things.

Yeah Holmes is like.. a Brit Jon Hamm now xD (whereas Watson, he's a hipster )
The gameplay seems to be the same as Crimes and Punishments (sort of), as long as it hasn't been streamlined even further, I'm ok with that.
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
