Black Mesa (formerly Black Mesa: Source) is a Half-Life 2 total conversion remaking VALVe Software's award-winning PC game, Half-Life. Utilizing the Source engine, Black Mesa will reintroduce the player as Doctor Gordon Freeman, along with the original cast of memorable characters and environments seen in Half-Life. Black Mesa was built and founded on the basis that Half-Life: Source was inadequate as the Source engine port of Half-Life, regardless of the intentions of VALVe Software. As such, Black Mesa was founded to fully reconstruct the Half-Life universe utilizing Source to its fullest potential in terms of art detail, level sizes and code features. This total conversion will not require Half-Life: Source to play - only a copy of any Source Engine game installed on Steam.
I've followed this with interest since 2005 and it's been a steady work towards release ever since. It will give people a chance to revisit Black Mesa and the atmosphere and game play of HL1 with up-to-date graphics and effects. Can't wait for this. Valve ought to buy the game from the team for a hefty sum of money. In the very least I'll donate something when it's released, it's being made by people that loved the game.
God, this mod is going to be sweet. However, I want to point out to the thread creator that this isn't called "Black Mesa: Source" anymore. It's just "Black Mesa," now.

Hope it gets released, most TC's doesnt. I still prefer HL1 over HL2, liked the settings in HL1 better..
I think this mod has progressed considerably further than most TCs, which usually don't get past the "greyscale weapons renders" stage.

Ha. It's Valve's intellectual property, they wouldn't have to "buy" it from anyone.
Correcting people since 2007 even if they're not wrong.

They bought Counterstrike and hired the modders, right? As for the IP, Valve doesn't own the work itself including all-new models, coding, audio, new textures etc.. The Black Mesa crew have basically set out to do what Valve didn't do (Half-Life: Source contained the same assets as the originals, they just ported the thing to source without replacing all assets).
Wounder how long it'll be until we see remade games like doom, diablo 1 & 2 etc with updates gfx. Worked for Hollywood remaking old movies, seems like the next natural step.
This mod looks cool though...
Dont mess with God, he can impregnate your girlfriend/wife without taking his pants off!
Trailer does look good , and without putting a downer on things its only a trailer , but if these guys can pull this off AND keep the gameplay/engrossing story line /atmosphere of the original half life ill buy it ,in fact if it turns out to be 1/4 as good as the original ill buy it.

I've been following Black Mesa's progress steadily since 2005. The Devs are renowned for not giving any information on release dates in the past and have never made any kind of promises as far as media releases, etc , that they could not keep. The fact that they have announced 2009 as a release date seems clear to me that after years of hard work this mod will be released soon. Black Mesa is somewhat of a legend in the Mod community having won best Mod at ModDB two or three times. This is something to get excited about, people. And by the way, this mod will be available totally free of charge. Think about that for a moment.

Yeah this might be the mod with the highest production values ever.
All the new models, textures, music, scripted events? It really looks like a full price game.
Whenever people tried to make mods this good before, they eventually gave up and the mods were never released, but this looks like it might actually get released some day.
Very impressive stuff for a mod.
Likot Mosuskekim, Woodcutter cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Elephant.

Yeah, but Counterstrike was an original IP developed by those modders. Black Mesa is not.

It's still infringing on Valve's IP. If Valve issued them a cease-and-desist order, they'd have no choice but to comply. Now of course, Valve is being really benign and has specifically approved of and allowed this project, but that does not mean that it isn't still Valve's wholly-owned IP.
