Which movie intro sets the mood instantly, is the most badass, or just pure genius, as far as you're concerned?
I can be a witty one-liner, or an elaborate mise en scène.
You tell it like you feel it
For me, it's like shooting an ambulance. As far as I'm concerned, this one is obvious:
Spoiler:
"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." ~Berthold Auerbach
+1 to practically everything that's been posted, truly fantastic stuff (and movies)
Imma add:
One of my favourites
Nailing the essence of the movie from the start.
Prime Ritchie :')
Technically and stylistically flawless intro (good movie too).
It nails it, literally xD
Possibly my favourite cartoon ever, the opening blew me away back then (I still got the feels )
Perfectly setting the mood!
Iconic Kubrickian opening (one of the several ones )
There are so many more excellent movies with powerful opening titles (and scenes), such as The Godfather, Full Metal Jacket with sergeant Hartman's epic speech, practically anything from Tarantino, Saving Private Ryan's Omaha Beach scene, The Gladiator's opening battle, Contact's uber-zooming out, almost every Fincher movie (especially the neat openings, a signature), The Good the Bad and the Ugly with the brilliant soundtrack followed by Tuco's escape, the list would be infinite really. All this is making me want to go through a massive vintage rewatching session
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, one of my all time favourite movies.
Very briefly sets the time and mood (with actual footage of the Vietnam war and protests) and then blam, the madness kicks in at 300km/h, and it doesn't really slow down until somewhere half way in. Don't like it? Fuck off (as 99% of the audience also did in the theatres )
Perfect adaptation of a seemingly impossible to film book, with both Depp and Del Toro absolutely brilliant in their roles.
The intro, from the first strings being heard from Don Davis' excellent score over the WB logo up until the "We need a search running." (not seen in the above video) is top film making.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
From above movies I would definitely agree with The Thing and Dawn of the Dead 2004.
The things opens with a myster - "why would they kill a dog?"
And Dawn of the Dead goes for a simple yet effective Hitchcock earth shaking opening.
Fury road does not fuck around:
Also Pitch Black is amazing and starts with a boom too. It's a scifi galore right off the bat:
Commando - It's sill and it know it. Arnold walking with a tree on his shoulders is all You need to know:
Donnie Darko - sets the 80s tone perfectly. Even though I strongly prefer original version, the music in opening scene of directors version fits perfectly:
Oldboy 2003 - get's You hooked up immediately into what is going on. Slow titles and boom! A 2000's music and then transition into drunk guy. Intrigued off the bat by cinematography iteslf. It's always my goto movie recommendation for best cinematography
Other notable ones:
It Follows - The girls is running away sets a mystery and can be kinda schocking
Leon - I am a sucker for 80s New York footage.
Kill the Mockingbird - that music
Blade - Blood is coming down from the showers at this crazy rave party?! what? shock! Great movie.
And same can be said for many hitchcock movies. He knows how to start a movie.
Probably way more but I don't remember right now
