Cultist Simulator is a game of apocalypse and yearning from Alexis Kennedy, creator of Fallen London and Sunless Sea. Play as a seeker after unholy mysteries, in a 1920s-themed setting of hidden gods and secret histories. Perhaps you're looking for knowledge, or power, or beauty, or revenge. Perhaps you just want the colours beneath the skin of the world.

In this roguelike narrative card game, what you find may transform you forever. Every choice you make, from moment to moment, doesn't just advance the narrative - it also shapes it.

Become a scholar of the unseen arts. Search your dreams for sanity-twisting rituals. Craft tools and summon spirits. Indoctrinate innocents. Seize your place as the herald of a new age.

In this 20-40 hour game, you'll:

  • Combine cards to tell your own story in a rich, Lovecraftian world of ambition, appetite and abomination. Corrupt your friends. Consume your enemies. There is never only one history.

  • Found a cult, dedicated to the Red Grail, or the Witch-and-Sister, or the Forge of Days. Recruit Believers and promote them to Disciples to serve as burglars, researchers, cat's-paws. Use your disciples to keep you fed - or feed on your disciples.

  • Unravel arcane, unacknowledged mysteries. Translate grimoires and glean their lore. Locate and pillage the Star Shattered Fane. Penetrate the realm of the Hours, and win a place in their service. Perhaps - if you are very cunning - you may even glimpse the Mansus.

  • Outwit rivals, investigators and the increasingly suspicious Authorities. Your own altered Appetites may force you to act abominably, but your Cause must not be stopped.

  • Transcend death with a story-driven legacy system. Perhaps your inheritors will complete the Rite of the Crucible Soul. Perhaps they'll find peace in a pleasing career. Perhaps they'll bring the Dawn.

A 20 hour single player CARD game where you're waiting for arbitrary timers to tick down? Oh boy...

This released today in case anyone's interested (nothing on the yarr front quite yet however). Lately we've been kinda slacking in bumping threads of the smaller indie games when they release so I thought I'd do my part. Very Happy

Never in my years have I played something so stupidly abstract and aloof. If autism was a game - this would be it. Very Happy

Seriously, this is some mind bending hipster trash. Put 4 hours into this thing and am no closer to understanding the goings on and mechanics then when I first started. Of course, there's absolutely no tutorial, the interface is a mess (with 90% of your time spent trying to organize the board - only to have cards not pop back to their original position once they're returned to you), and the entire thing makes about as much sense as trying to read something while you're asleep.

In a major free update coming to Cultist Simulator on January 22nd, victory through immortality will be just the beginning. Developers Weather Factory call this second story ‘advanced mode’, and it lets players resume a completed game in a very clever way. Taking control of an apostle of your now-immortal past self, your new goal is to help your old character ascend to godhood, possibly ending the world in the process. An easy job, then, except for a cadre of rival immortals seeking to throw some eldritch spanners into your machinations.

It sounds like this new mode will be a challenge. “Basically unfair” say Weather Factory, which sounds about right. It was tough enough when it was just you and your cult dodging the attention of the authorities, but having rival eldritch demi-gods gunning for you and your patron? That sounds fun. The new update promises more lore, multiple routes to godhood, and on each attempt at ascendance, one of four opposing immortals to lock horns with. Weather Factory say they “make Detectives and Rivals look like playground bullies”, and will go to great lengths to stop you.

I’ve got a bit of a thing for creative New Game Plus or Hard modes that remix old challenges in thematically coherent ways. Advanced mode sounds like an especially smart way of retaining the plate-spinning tension of Cultist Sim while raising the stakes. As you’re playing as a mere apostle, you’ll have to deal with the same financial, health and notoriety concerns as before, but the new end goals and additional story gives it exciting new context. Better still, it builds on the game’s existing idea that even a failed run leads to new possible starting points. Soon, you can end it all.

The update goes live at 7pm GMT/11am PST on January 22nd, and will be a free update for everyone with the game on Steam, GOG and Itch.
