Unifying the classic, time-tested action iconic to the Warriors series with a variety of new features, characters and content in an expansive open world environment, Dynasty Warriors 9 aims to deliver the most immersive and ambitious Dynasty Warriors experience to date.
Augmenting the series’ first true open world is another immersive innovation introduced in Dynasty Warriors 9: the Interactive Action system. Players will be able to fully utilize their surroundings for the first time in the Warriors franchise with the ability to climb buildings and mountains, wield grappling hooks to traverse walls, and make use of objects like oil barrels in battle. These new actions offer a breadth of new possibilities for players to take advantage of while traveling around third-century China, or when caught in the heat of battle!
Dynasty Warriors 9 introduces exhilarating new combat mechanics to the series’ signature “one versus thousands” style gameplay with the State Combo System. This new system allows players to perform 3 different attack styles – Trigger Attacks, Flow Attacks and Finish Attacks – each dealing progressively more damage. Trigger Attacks allow players to create the start of an explosive combo, leading to Flow Attacks, which adapt to the enemy’s current state. Successful combos allow for a Finish Attack to be performed, delivering a final blow that eradicates any foes caught in its path. These new enhancements aim to create a thrilling and fluid experience unlike any previous entry in the franchise.
Unifying the classic, time-tested action iconic to the Warriors series with a variety of new features, characters and content in an expansive open world environment, Dynasty Warriors 9 aims to deliver the most immersive and ambitious DYNASTY WARRIORS experience to date. Platforms, release timing, and more information on the game’s new features, characters, and narrative will be unveiled in the coming months.

Koei Tecmo recently detailed how it will tackle Dynasty Warriors 9’s story, which spans 10 eras of The Three Kingdoms and features the entire roster of Dynasty Warriors 8 alongside a few new characters.
Speaking to Famitsu (translated by Kite Stenbuck) at ChinaJoy 2017, Producer Suzuki Akihiro said each era has a predetermined final objective, completion of which transitions the story to the next era. Alongside the main objectives, Dynasty Warriors 9 has various interconnected missions that make the final objective much easier. While players can rush towards the final objective, Suzuki says players will face a difficult battle as the main enemy warlord will be heavily protected.
The longer a character lives in The Three Kingdoms story, the longer they are playable in the game. Characters are unlocked by progressing through the story, and playing each faction offers a different story experience and perspective. However, Dynasty Warriors 9 lacks a Free Mode and “what if” scenarios present in previous entries, though Suzuki says the team is planning to implement something similar to Free Mode.
At present, the open-world game has no traditional difficulty options but developer Koei Tecmo is considering its implementation to satisfy the game’s broad fan base. Currently in place are action RPG elements such as player leveling and weapon collecting. Weapons can be unlocked from mission rewards or by completing weapon blueprints. The game also has obtainable elemental attachments for weapons.
Combat still looks like shit. How many games does it take for them to actually innovate...
There must be some people out there that don't care about basically the same graphics and gameplay since years. Else i can't explain why don't try to innovate more.
I'm not one of them though.

its the same as CoD
also from what i read this one should have some bigger changes aka openworld, new engine ... bu i guess the base gameplay will be the same as the people who love it will still buy it
I've been playing Warriors games and its other counterpart Basara since PS2. Basara have been innovating its combat each game, while Warriors is still stuck with the mindless spammy control scheme. I guess that's really all my problem with it. Because otherwise I still am a fan of them. Just recently I've been playing Empires for example.
I guess I'm just annoyed they don't even bother improving their repetitive combat in larger increments per game. And I'm skeptical as to just what exactly is the point of Open-world in a Warriors game.
We are pleased to finally announce that open-world epic DYNASTY WARRIORS 9 will be released across Europe on the 13th February 2018 for the PlayStation®4, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam®.
Doesn't look all that interesting, what is really the point of open world for a DW game, when the strategy or outside of combat part of the games are always really shallow. Well, combat is pretty shallow too.
However, the potential of what they can do in Empires... Now that I'm really interested in.
this is fascinating ... all the impressions i read about the new combat were that its much better than ever before and the openworld is fine , meanwhile jim deprling trashes it to oblivion
Tried it briefly since I do like the DW games. This is probably the most different entry in the series in forever, but boy does it run awful... it doesn't even look better than 8, kind of looks worse in fact. I have absolutely no idea how one is supposed to play this, the framerate is so bad that it's in unplayable territory. Difference between maximum and minimum settings is barely of around 10 fps.

Got around to watching this, damn Koei has been mastering the art of Autoerotic Assetflipping (As it was called in the video.) for quite a while longer than I had any idea about, something like 40+ games and dozens of DLC, there was a whole part before the actual Dynasty Warriors 9 bit just for that bit which was fascinating to hear about.
Koei is going all out with this I suppose, sounds like the game is quite a mess on most platforms too though I guess the inevitable Extreme version will try to change a few things heh.
I don't really watch too many of Jim's videos but it was entertaining and pretty interesting not just for the game itself and what it changed or streamlined or removed but the "Warriors" games overall and the sheer amount of them.
EDIT: Or so I thought I had but that was another video entirely it seems and there's a number of them now, game must have hit some really low bar for him to focus so much on it.
