Not trying to be poetic here. My Windows 10 start menu search finds files that no longer exist and no new files. Hence, it seems to be frozen in time.

An example is that I find Cheat Engine 6.4, but only 6.7 is installed by now, hence I cannot start this program via start menu search. If I navigate through the menu only 6.7 shows up, which is correct. This tool is only used for research purposes of course Cool Face

Generally I am only interested in files in the start menu to start programs quickly and as such my search index locations were set up.

I tried:
Rebuilding search index
Deleting search index
Moving and deleting search index
All of the above with some restarts in between
Turn off search service
Tell search service to index nothing
Tell search service that it still needs to be setup via regedit
Windows troubleshooting of Windows Search (finds nothing)

None of the above appear to have any effect on my search results. So the search index and start menu search don't appear to be connected.

Additional notes:
Cortana is turned off as much as I could I think.
sfc /scannow finds nothing
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth finds nothing
reregistered all packages to no avail (found this tip on the interwebz) with Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Anyone got any ideas or perhaps a solution to restore windows start menu search? Confused

Wait for Timeline (Spring 2018 Creators Update) which is coming in a few more days.. that usually fixes it since its like receiving completely new OS.

Back in Nov last year I had utter shiet occur after it failed to update the Fall Creators 2017 (ie. no text below any icons, everywhere) and I lost my ability to restore/back out to last version. So I managed to finally get the Fall Creators Update to go and that basically fixed 99% of all my issues. So maybe wait a few days, force Timeline down and I bet it will restore your Search facility. It certainly did that AND much more back in Nov. Refreshed everything so it was basically all cleaned out and new again.

Seems to work again for now. Not sure what fixed it. The last thing I did was set the taskbar entries to large again and enable the search box, but I doubt that fixed it.

A bit earlier and a few restarts I however followed this advice to allow apps to run in the background while disallowing every specific app.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_cortana/windows-10-creators-update-search-not-finding-apps/eaf70556-2344-474d-b633-e00140b0466d

I deleted some entries and indeed they dissappeared, although for one it took a few seconds, which I find pathetic already. The program "Everything" is faster while monitoring indeed everything than this was and this only has an index of <700 files, if my search index even has anything to do with this start menu search.

Thanks for reading Very Happy

@ thudo
Oh a reply, thx Very Happy
That would have been my remaining hope. Not exactly a good solution though. Wink

https://superuser.com/questions/98958/clear-search-cache-on-windows-7

Does it have to do with a misbehaving indexing service? Maybe if it happens again you can try rebuilding the cache

I tried that and already mentioned it in the OP. In fact I will say again, that it didn't even seem like this index and the actual search were connected at all. Even no index produced the same (faulty) search results.
