Because a few devs from notable studios post there on occasions, and also gaming industry insiders.
Also, gaming news websites often steal news from GAF.
Other than that it's a website full of condescending jackasses and SJW.
I browse it for news and laughs whenever a tidbit like this pops up, and ignore everything else, it's the only way to stay sane.

IMO it doesn't seem that surprising at all 
Even if the theme was other than the "wahoo look at this, soe wacky ye-he-hey waoaoaoao" which I personally loathe, it needs some other hook other than that.

Various reasons, number 1 being that most news either originate there or they are the second place (after the source) to have the news.
Meaning all other forums just copy the news they find on gaf, same thing journos do.
The difficulty to get in (account approval could take months or years and you can only register with a non free email) means the trolls have to be more subtle than in other places if they want to stay. GAF is known to ban game developers and journos, people from the very industry they admire, if they don't like them; they certainly wouldn't think twice of banning a non famous person if they don't like him.
Now who they like and who they don't, that's a different matter.
