Not to sound pessimistic, but am I missing the appeal of the game other than the graphics?
Granted I haven't looked into it beyond the videos here, but it feels like 3d farmville using fish:
Harvest stuff, to get upgrades to harvest more stuff, to afford bigger things to harvest stuff all based around the same-same gameplay just with new widgets attached to your farm (ship).
Like if cookie clicker made you navigate a map to produce more cookies.
Am I missing something on the game mechanics the demo and videos dont show? Not shitting on it curious if it was something I might like (as I like progress games with that theme like factorio, satisfactory, etc), and just missing the angle of what its 'draw you in appeal' of expanding gameplay vs managing evolving complexity is, from my lack of info on it.

The game has an intense atmosphere and some compelling mysteries that can capture you with ease.
I loved the demo and I pre-ordered this without hesitation.
Ah ok. I was focusing on the mechanics of the game. Look interesting for those that are into it and like the game style where progress that you get stronger/better as story moves forward.
Story/Atmosphere/and so on don't 'do' it for me it video games. So not my type of game.
Which is odd, since i LOVE pen and paper tabletop RPG like D&D, Pathfinder, Rifts, GURPS, etc (play it nearly every weekend since the 90s). I guess its the knowledge that in one we are literally making the story as we go with no limits, we are the writers of it. The other is just experiencing a premade unchangeable one.
Thinking about it I see video game stories as: Its like a movie, that I have to do work to make play. Can just watch a movie. I play games for the game mechanics, the story just gets in my way (I'm the guy that spams space, then esc, then flail all the keys going "AHH unskippable exposition cut scene!..damnit!"
Played all of Far Cry 5 with a friend in coop...not a CLUE what the story is about. Some crazy dude that yells at us, then later gets real close and cries angry at the camera like 1/2 way in, then we kill his sister or mom, or wife..something...and then dies near the big jesus statue...the middle parts of that. Cant tell you
RDR2? Story I know playing it a lot: I shot a lot of people on horses, and a lot not on horses. And some weird ghost teleporting guy in a swamp.
Well I also love reading books, they are unchanging too.... But it would be like a book, that requires me to do 20 jumping jacks and remove a stripped screw out of a engine block to go to the next chapter every time...I wouldn't read it

Since I was quite ahead at work, I spent some sweet company time playing this
*Disclaimer, I played 3-4h so far*
"Lovecraftian" tends to be thrown a lot around these days, and this one overplays, so far, the name. Lovecraft, you said? Here, fish-related robed cultists.
Yet eh, what can I say? If well done, I'm a sucker for those type of settings.
That being said, I'm having fun seeing a pretty intreaguing story revolving around a simple yet not constraining gameplay.
You quickly can get your ship to do stuff without too much time passing by, and you never really need/feel like grinding is a necessity at all.
Quickly, you're able to go around and discover the world without too much hurlde. Fear the fog, though
Game doesn't seem that lenghty, and might lose it's appeal fast, if the patterns stay similar (going around collecting boards and shit isn't that great after the 20+th time, imo).
Will stick to it for the developping story. Might drop it if it stays "chill-ish"/red key-red lock.
They integrated the gameplay perfectly with the story which made for a great pacing. I never felt like I needed to grind and the fishing can be quite relaxing. The story is compelling and takes full advantage of the atmosphere. They did a wonderful job in shifting between serene to terrifying.
My biggest gripes are that I wanted more story, more terror and actual storms.
