Posted: Mon, 27th Jan 2020 14:39 Post subject: Need a new recommendation on 4k HDR streaming to my TV |
|
 |
So, long story short, last time Sin recommended an AppleTV to stream 4k HDR content from my pc to my TV. After further reading on the subject and the fact that i no longer had anything to play at that time, i left it like that. But now.. doom eternal is soon here and with HDR support... so they say.
Problem is, i read that 4k HDR wont work via steamlink on appleTV unless my monitor matches that (as in no HDR monitor, no streaming in HDR).
Only solution that actually works (but not even that is clear if it works 100%) would be NVIDIA shield, using GAMESTREAM to stream 4k HDR (also this is unclear since it seems not all games will work with HDR, those that have ingame HDR will, those that need windows HDR enabled first to have the option won't.. or something like that.)
Now on to my actual question.
Would making a weak pc and connecting it to my TV work? Like... a 1050 and would GAMESTREAM work from my main pc (connected to a GSYNC non HDR monitor) to "stream 4k hdr" to my shitpc? They'd all be connected via ethernet, just like with an nvidia shield.
JFC i so regret not taking into consideration a long hdmi cable through the wall right now... had no idea it would be close to impossible to stream 4k HDR games from my pc to my tv... I tried witcher 3 on ps4pro and that fucking sub30fps made me dizzy + nausea... then going on pc with 144fps @ 1440p -_-

I have a "old" Laptop, a HP Pavilion dm4 beatz edition, with an i3 or i5 2xxxm something and its onboard gpu (it has an amd card aswell, but that seems to be broken or at least faulty, so I disabled it) and with steam installed, hoked to gbit ethernet + hdmi to tv, I could stream 4k from my main pc via it.
Couldn't tell you about the HDR tho, never checked that. But purely from the 4k aspect, it's no issue at all, since it's purely throughput. The laptop is essentially an extension cord, lol.
PS: and FYI, that was with a 1080p screen on my main (now 1440p, but I can still stream at 4k or whatever resolution I want)

Yeah but that's the main issue, the HDR. Otherwise id just get the appleTV.
Can't find any clear answers, would just buy a shield but like i mentioned in the other thread ages ago, would have to buy on amazon and not a fan of that, rather buy locally to easily return in case im not satisfied for whatever reason.

I wouldn’t connect anything Intel or Windows in general to an HDR TV. Things are dire. The streamers have the super upper hand here. Even finding HDMI 2.0 is hard with PCs. In 2020.
Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with your requirements for gaming streaming. You cannot connect the PC to the TV?

I don't think the HDR is a real issue. I just launched a few games, with or without in-game HDR support and even when OFF, the TV still natively has HDR, so it still is clearly used. Maybe differently, but it IS there.

Nope, would have to use a fatass 4k hdmi cable through the living room. Renovated last year and all cables are hidden, so this would just look shitty. The PC is at my desk, connected to my monitor, mostly for work and some PC games where i want HFR. I could connect if i really wanted to play a game like this but wanted a long-term solution that wouldn't need me to always connect/disconnect cables if i want to play something.

Not sure i understand.
Everything i read says you can't have 4k and HDR in games while streaming from your pc to your tv with anything other than GAMESTREAM (Nvidia). Unless your monitor is also HDR so you can enable HDR on the main pc, then steamlink can also do 4k HDR. So only solution would be NVIDIA Shield , and was wondering if another PC could act as a "gamestream device" via GEFORCE EXPERIENCE.

What I said, was, that the TV takes the signal and enhances it none the less. At least that's how it looks to me when I watch the games on my TV...

You are asking for trouble if you want to stream 4K60 HDR, since games with HDR need to be individually supported by GeForce Experience to support HDR via gameStream, in other words this combined with absolutely shit Windows HDR implementation... I dont have any straight answer for this, i would just drill hole to the wall and use high quality active HDMI cable that supports your needs.
