Quote:

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency; a trippy mystery that thrusts a reluctant sidekick into the bizarre world of an unconventional detective who believes in the interconnectedness of all things. When washed-up rocker Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood) stumbles upon the murder scene of a millionaire, all hell breaks loose. Eccentric detective, Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett), wholly believes they’re destined to untangle the peculiar events surrounding the mystery together, whether Todd likes it or not! A collection of wild and dangerous characters’ further infiltrate and complicate their world, each episode landing them a few random steps closer to uncovering the truth. Penned by Max Landis (American Ultra, Chronicle), Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is an adaptation of the wildly popular novels by Douglas Adams (A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)

Dat wasn't actually bad. Unfortunately it wasn't funny most of the time but the story was nice and all the little details fell into place perfectly. The ending was pretty good.

The best part of the show was ..Holistic Assassin..Laughing Most of her scenes were really great..

7.5++/10

PS I haven't read the books.

I watched the first 3 episodes and didn't think it was funny so I dropped it.

I've watched 4 episodes so far, I quite like it. The scene on the bridge in episode 2 was great, and a perfect example of the downside of a "holistic investigation". I didn't expect the show to have sci-fi elements in it, that took me by surprise. Overall I'm very interested in watching the rest.

Edit: Finished it, enjoyed it overall.

Best show i've seen since Stranger Things, imo it was just as good..

I don't think it should be seen as a comedy (someone mentioned it wasn't funny enough), it's more grim and more serious than Hitchhiker's Guide, it's a lot about friendship, kind of the main theme. It has comedic parts, like most shows, but the main focus is absolutely not comedy..

Lots of great characters. Elijah is hysterical 90% of the time (..which makes sense) but it was bearable and he does the part really well imo. Most interesting character is the holistic assassin, some really great scenes with that character Very Happy

9/10. Can't wait for S2.

It's a weird show (intentionally) with a few Adams-caramels dropped here and there. It is NOT really Dirk Gently to me (as in the awesome fantastic books). It lacks nearly all of the absurd humor that made the books so great. I enjoy the show nevertheless.

S1 was great but Todd was so hysterical at times that it could get annoying with all the screaming / running around in circles, pulling his hair etc, here its much more tuned down.

Feels a bit too much Harry Potter at times now perhaps, but i still like it.

Without spoiling too much; that episode where they get ""high"" haha, that's the best description of MDMA i've ever seen, including the "after effects" Very Happy

Yeah, Todd screaming is little too much but at least he does it in a way it's not much irritating.

Have not read the books; so no idea how it really is. Very enjoyable show. Smile

Elijah was a good choice i think! I really hate when actors looks almost bored or like nothing really happened when something extraordinary happens, he can look truly flabbergasted, like his eyes are ready to pop out Laughing

Haven't read the books either, usually a good thing when watching TV series, it doesnt leave you wondering what the fuck they did Wink

It has nothing to do with the books, they only took the concept with the whole "everything is connected" and the way Dirk solves things, so when he gets connected to the case he will eventually solve it. Maybe also the fact that everything is kinda possible, since he did meet Thor in the books (which is referenced in the show). The whole CIA thing isn't in the books at all.

Okay! This is my favourite show at the moment. Just caught up with the latest episode and I've thoroughly enjoyed the season 2 just as season 1. Very Happy

I don't know if there is anything I'd change. I don't mind the CIA/Blackwing at all. Friedkin's scenes are silly fun. Only thing I was missing was Bart. I hope she plays a bigger role in last 2 episodes.

I miss stuff like the electric monk (manufactured to believe in things since people were generally too busy spending time on such trivialities) on his horse, Dirk Gently's brilliant way of finding his way by following a car that looks like it knows where it's going, a sofa that got stuck in a stairwell with no physical way of removing it and so on.

In other words, I miss a lot of Douglas Adams in the show.

For those that haven't read the two books (not counting the third book that was never finished due to the unfortunate death of Douglas Adams), they are absolutely awesome.

Quote:
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Characters:

Characters in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Dirk Gently (also known by a number of other names, including Svlad Cjelli), the operator of the eponymous detective agency that operates based on the "fundamental interconnectedness of all things." He specialises in missing cats and messy divorces. At university, Dirk, seemingly deliberately, created rumours about having clairvoyant abilities by vigorously denying that he had any. He concocted a "get-rich scheme" offering a university exam preparation service and was eventually sent to prison when, by sheer coincidence, he accurately duplicated the exam papers for that year without having seen them.

Richard MacDuff, a young software engineer working for WayForward Technologies II, owned by Gordon Way. His Anthem software, which is designed as a spreadsheet, but also has a unique feature to convert corporate accounts into music, was extremely popular, but he is falling behind in his deadlines to create an updated version. Throughout the book, he tries to figure out how a couch became impossibly stuck in the L-shaped stairway to his flat, forcing him and any visitors to climb over it to get to his flat.

Reg (Professor Urban Chronotis, the Regius Professor of Chronology), Richard's old college tutor, a fellow of St. Cedd's College, Cambridge with no apparent duties, who is "on the older side of completely indeterminate". He has a predisposition for childish conjuring tricks and an extremely bad memory.

An Electric Monk from a planet very far from the Earth.
Electric monks are coincidentally humanoid robots designed to practice religion in their owners' stead. This particular monk had accidentally been connected to a video recorder and, in attempting to believe everything on the TV, had malfunctioned and begun to believe "all kinds of things, more or less at random", including things like tables being hermaphrodites and God wanting a lot of money sent to a certain address. Since it was cheaper to replace the Monk than to repair it, the Monk was cast out in the wilderness to believe whatever it liked. The Monk also owns a somewhat cynical horse, which he was allowed to keep because "horses were so cheap to make". Upon his arrival on Earth, the Monk has several humorous misadventures.

I enjoy the CIA stuff as well, especially since i got a bit tired of the main characters whining so much in this season. I guess thats what put me off a bit.

In the books Dirk isn't as camp or exuberant as he is here, he's more sarcastic, if i remember correctly.

S2 wasn't nearly as good as S1 even though the acting and dialogue was better (getting warm in their roles).

There might not be a season 3 though due to low ratings which is a shame because I had hoped Max Landis would come up with a better story line for the next season.

Quote:
[Ratings for Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency have been low but steady. Averaging 248,000 viewers each week with a .07 share, the series is down only slightly from its season 1 average of 287,000 weekly viewers and a .09 share of the key demographic. While these numbers aren't great, they're not that far off the show's BBC America neighbor, Orphan Black, which lasted 5 seasons on the network.

If a Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency season 3 renewal or cancellation is announced, we'll be sure to relay the good or bad news to fans either way.
