The third game in the I.G.I. series is in development for release in 2021, developer Toadman Interactive announced.
The game, which is still to be titled, is a tactical stealth first-person shooter and prequel to previous games that will cover the origin story of the I.G.I. organization. Development is currently in the prototyping stage, and one of the original creators is on board.
The original Project I.G.I. launched for PC in 2000, followed by I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike. Both were developed by Innerloop Studios and sold a combined total of over a million units.
“I’m so psyched to announce that the prototyping is going well and we already have a fun base game to play in the studio,” Toadman Interactive CEO Robin Flodin said in a press release. “Today, we are releasing a teaser showing a glimpse of our prototyping and many things will improve as we continue the development. The reason we are sending out this update is so that we can allow enthusiasts to provide ideas and feedback when we are in the early stages of development. We want to hear from you fans to make sure you get to see the most out of this game.”
Man I played these games to death. I hated the second one cause you couldn't walk outside the map boundaries. I loved the engine, it was the same as Sega Extreme Sports and the maps were basically infinite and back then such huge areas were a novelty. In the first game one of the snow levels I once put the mouse on the move key, then went to school. When I came back the dude was still running.
Project IGI
It was such an immersive game back in the day, had simple yet hardcore mechanics while offering complete freedom and some damned satisfying sniping. The maps were a tad too empty and the unpredictable AI/enemy respawns could be infuriating (very!), but those flaws still didn't tarnish the experience for me, good old PC-exclusive times.
There was a recent-ish low-budget attempt to recreate the formula called Beyond Enemy Lines that didn't exactly pull it off, let's hope this 'official' one will manage to do better. I'm just going to set the expectations to very_low settings though, as per usual (similarly to SWAT's spiritual successor Ready or Not, SS3 and..anything really).
The previous games were bastard hard with a non existant checkpoint and save system if I remember correct lol . I never got very far in those games due to me getting so far then cocking up and losing all progress and having to start all over. It wore on my patiance but I somewhat liked the games still.
In this day and age though I bet there'll be checkpoints, saves and hand holding throughout. Surprised they ressurected this franchise in all honesty.

igi 2 had manual saves. But they were kinda hidden in the menu, it wasnt labeled as save game. It was something like upload intel or smth like that
And igi 1 having no saves was a design mistake admited by the developers. Its not hardcore to not have to repeat a half hour mission because you pressed a wrong key at the end and died. Its just retarded

Meh. The tension brought on by having no saves made it fun. The game's pretty short anyway, if you weren't playing levels a few times you'd be done in a few hours.
There was a bunch of games in that year 2000 that launched with no save option. People flooded the devs with emails requesting one. Giants Kabuto, IGI, Vampire Redemption, Hitman.
Redemption received a patch that added a save option because of the pressure from the customers. They didnt like this. Giants developers promised a save game patch also at customer request that never materialized.
IGI devs also got negative feedback because of this and said no save was a mistake because the original design had shorter and more intense levels, but by the end of the development the levels got larger than what they wanted initially. They promised a patch to add save option, but they also didnt deliver one. But IGI 2 had a save game option.
Hitman 1 also got emails requesting a save game option and they said its too late at the time for Hitman 1 but future games will have save option. And they did implement it in the sequels.
Personally, I'd like the player to be able to choose difficulty when starting a new game. Hard difficulty doesn't have save-anywhere, medium does. So everyone is satisfied.
I remember Operation Flashpoint had checkpoints but also a limited save (1?). I used to alt-tab out of the game, move the save folder elsewhere and the game would allow me to save again
so someone bought the trademark and or license cheap and now trying to cash in on it ? He gonna have a hard time, very very few people will remember the originals
The prequel to 2000's Project I.G.I.: Experience a high octane thrill ride through a spy fantasy world of gadgets and guns against the vivid, sumptuous backdrop of the 1980s. Unravel a mystery that threatens to plunge the world into a new era of nuclear annihilation. You're going in.
I hope that with "high octane thrill ride" they don't mean cinematic Cowadoodly-esque scripts, the beauty of IGI is/was the actual freedom to approach the maps with no constraints. *Fingers crossed*
