|
 |
Wow, Arkane studios are in the same league as ID Software and Volition now.
Good job releasing the source code, now we can create a Linux port and remake Ultima Underworld 1+2.
Not to mention implementation of shaders and hdr lightning
Whats interesting to note is that It's ZeniMax Mediagroup who owns the studio now and must've approved this.
Zenimax are obviously known for owning Bethesda Softworks and ID Software.
Zenimax is whats left of the old Microprose publisher as well.
Following the source release theres also a new patch.

Arx Fatalis patches always include all fixes from previous updates.
Arx Fatalis English v1.21
-------------------------
- Improved overall game stability under Microsoft© Windows Vista© & Windows 7©.
- Fixed blinking effect that may happen when starting a new game.
- Fixed HUD scaling when display resolution is higher than 1024x960.
- Fixed EAX option: value is now saved when leaving the option menu.
- Fixed an issue with the game locking-up when opening player inventory.
- Fixed length of cinemascope bars displayed during cinematics.
- Fixed some performance issues with a few Nvidia GPU (see Notes).
Notes:
- If you experience in game framerate drops or stuttering, please give a try to the "Enable Rendering Fix" option in the Video settings.
- This patch will remain the very last Arx Fatalis update released by Arkane Studios. However, the whole source code of the game is now available for download, which means that numerous fan made updates/mods may be found around the Internet. Arkane Studios won't provide any kind of answer or support regarding community developed content.
Arx Fatalis English v1.20

That's a nice gesture indeed.
It is also interesting to see if Carmack will actually shoot himself in the leg and release the id Tech 4 source, or be exposed as a money seeking hypocrite. Lose-lose for him in any case.

Ok. Time for our fellow programmers to study the code and create a proper, quality and 100% nonderp RPG branded NFOHUmp™

Yeah, pretty decent of them. Hope there'll be some good modifications. Still though, I think there's often a tendency to concentrate on graphical effects more than actual gameplay mechanics and features when the source code for 3D games are released, and often without even updating textures and models which is what really makes a game's graphics. Let's hope they concentrate on gameplay instead.

Haha, no there is nothing fishy about id Tech 4. It is a fantastic piece of software, from the days where Carmack was not just another corporate money seeking whore. But if you look at id Tech 5 and id Tech 4, the differences are nothing serious, at least from current showcases. At the hands of a group of talented developers, it will become way more impressive than id Tech 5's initial offerings. So if he releases it, he shoots himself, id and Zenimax in the foot (in the PC market at least).
Now, in the past, Carmack has stated that he would release previous engines' source codes with subsequent engine versions, at no cost, and no matter the cost it took to develop these engines. If this doesn't happen, now especially with the Zenimax corporation doing him from behind, he is a hypocrite.
Lose lose situation.

Great game. I had it reinstalled a about 2 months ago. Had do to some work to get it working on Win7. But never got the mouse gestures for casting magic to work properly, they had to be drawn very small to work.
Source code looks pretty small. Extremely small actually...Should be easy to pick up by modders.

This really is a HUGE thing, as the source is released under the GPL.
This basically means that anybody can make his or her own modification of it and redistribute it as long as he provides the source of his modifications.
One of the first things that needs to be done from a open source developer perspective is to remove EAX as it's license doesn't allow redistribution, although I may be wrong as it's EAX 2.0.
But implementing openal should be a priority.

Aye, exactly. Though in all honesty, it's been a while since I played so I'll more than likely start afresh anyhow.
.... once I've cleared the backlog of all the other games I want to play.

Very interesting source code, much better then Thief leaked crap you couldn't make heads or tails with that one, here you can see how movement, spells, physics work.

I just realized how sick (literally) the gesture-spells can be.
Can you say, "Cock and Balls"?

I cant get the spells to work, "light the torches in the hallways with your fire spell" I make the gesture it appears top right and yet nothing happens..
it also mentioned something about having them preloaded and useable with shift key but that dont do anything either, its probably just me but if there is a particular way to do this let me know

I can't believe that are so many around here that didn't even try Arx Fatalis until now. How could you guys? It's one of the pc gaming's gems. When it was released it was amazing and it still hasn't lost that even in this day. I tried the game some time ago. The game has some problems in some areas on Win7 only I think, but other than that, it worked just fine for me. Triple buffering needs to be disabled for the game to work well I think (or was it other option, I don't know).
