Given this progress, and in collaboration with several of our technology partners – including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla – Adobe is planning to end-of-life Flash. Specifically, we will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020 and encourage content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to these new open formats.

Flash under Adobe was a disaster. Macromedia did a really nice job, but when it was bought by Adobe, all the Macromedia products went down in quality.

I guess the question needs to be asked then - what is wrong with Flash?

How about resource hog and abysmal security for the starters?

In the early 2000 many sites were made with flash with no exact point. The navigation was a mess and pretty much every media site was rather annoying to use with the music, loading screens and other bullshit. It was done because it was fun for the creators.

Flash had it's chance and it failed really bad. So did Real Player, Quick Time, Java Runtime and many others.

How did it fail if it's been alive for the past ~25 years and is still kicking?

Is it? Smile

25 years or less it had its chance and it died for a reason. People do not care is it a bad format or the application itself. Either it works or it doesnt. Bad implementation has killed many promising technologies and whatever the reason might be no one wants unecessary fustration (with security included) while using their web. I might be wrong but I would still say that it wont be missed except by some media creators people in general couldnt care less about.

Officially not but in general it's next to dead.

That is because they are stupid.

Same could be said about eg. Windows 8? Microsoft did something no one asked for and people couldnt care less due it's annoyances. Same can be said about flash. Dont expect masses to read instructions how to use a damn web API.

But escalibur, those security flaws aren't inherent to Flash itself, they're inherent in Adobes implementation with Flash Player which it clearly states on the chart you linked to: "Adobe Flash Player : Vulnerability Statistics ". I tend to agree that Flash is probably a goner anyway due to all the security flaws in the software that use Flash (Apple dropped Flash in 2012). HTML5 is the only known replacement I know of.

As for "the intended purpose" argument, clearly the increasing popularity shifted the intended purpose to become browser focused.

Yeah. I should've been more specific. Flash had it shitty players and that's why the world has moved on. As for animation tool it can be good but that's another topic.

Don't some AAA games use Flash for their UI? World of Tanks, Assassin's Creed games, The Witcher 2... Or am I way off?

That doesn't make sense, as it's intended purpose has always been animation. And they now have tools that export those animations in other browser based formats (not to mention video). I don't see how it can 'go' or 'die' because Flash player is disappearing from browsers, that is a very specific use that died a while ago already. The only reason it'll die as an application is if a better alternative comes along or if people stop using / buying it.

As I said, I have been using it for near 20 years, nothing else I've tried comes close to being as robust for animation.
