For no reason most of the desktop files, along 1GB from my personal folder, has gone missing..
I've tried a demo of EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard and it found the files but the damn app has a limit of use.. I am using the full portable version i've found (yet it's in russian) and it's taking it's sweet time... nearly 3h to find the files and not everything from the desktop , including an art project (personal) , has been shown up in the results yet
I wanted to ask what's the best tool out there to recovery files the fastest way as possible. I'll try to find the full version myself but it's getting me desperate ><;

Recovery, fast.
Just have some patience and maybe set the tool up better so it knows where and what to look for instead of a broad search.

I already marked to check only to Desktop but ofcourse that means a frigging whole system searching even...

dont panic
lemme guess: only shortcuts for programs which were installed with the option "for all users" are on the desktop? then most likely just something wrong with your user profile. windows sometimes has hickups, but nothing is gone. restart your machine and it should be back
there is no other way for files from desktop (WHICH IS NOT THE SPACE TO STORE IMPORTANT DATA!) to disappair temporarily

Only a few videos remained there and a game shortcut too, along my personal folder (Wich somehow lost 1GB of stuff but it's nothing that dramatic since it's random stuff and good thing yesterday i made a backup of it)
Even with an app called Recuva, recovered everything (Music etc but NOT recovering the folder itself)... Except a drawing i've just started today with Sai2 (And yes, i've check the Open Recent with such program and didn't found my file)
IT IS DRIVING ME NUTS because i've spent one hour today with it and NOT ITS GONE...Good thing i made a screenshot of the process window but ofcourse IT'S NOT THE SAME...
And it's funny because using Recuva it recovered a shit ton of files but NOTHING CAN BE OPENED, be it PDF PSD etc...Not even music files
Congratulations, good thing i had a backup but i'm sure nothing will recover my art project... Now i have to sketch it over a simple image i had..."yay"
Somehow i've got 3 desktop.ini files wich similar contents. Where should i put em?..
And where do you suggest me to put the data then?. This is the first time in years that this has ever happened to me

there is no logical reason for files disappearing from the desktop besides windows fucking around with the user profiles (or you did with moving it to another directory) unless there are some serious problems with the harddrive itself
just store it anywhere, but not on the desktop

You store files on the desktop aside from shortcuts?

1. I already tried searching for one of the files i was working on from the start menu. Nothing
2. Probably Windows did something.. The possible time it happened was when i tried out Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
It's funny because such thing never happened before, only when i do WSUS OFFLINE wich makes a 2nd account, but whenever i do that i make sure to not put any personal files on the desktop etc
This never happened on W7 FOR YEARS nor on W10 in the last close to 2 weeks..
I already tried spybot, ccleaner but nothing.. Both recovery apps restored all the files except the project i did but whenever i opened the files they wouldn't open, as they looked corrupted, no matter if i placed the recoveries to another SSD just like the program suggested.. "Such nice tools". NOT..

So i've found the project file but once i recover it with EaseUs to my 2nd SSD it cannot be opened by the program, throws an error. Tried extension change etc.. The good thing is that i can recover the project as many times as i want but is there any program to repair the broken file?...
It's a Paint Tool SAI2 file , .sai2 extension

If something has overwritten part of the data of the rescued file you're basically screwed since there's no way to "repair" that kind of damage unless there's some kind of redundancy in place.

I had kinda a similar issue and after some testing of various softwares, i found the only one that rescued it all. (ok i guess that is if teh files aint overwritten to death)
The Best Tool so far, for me, is TESTDISK and its open source it has a massive documentation, can be easy used via CMD.
Get it here:
https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
Quote: |
TestDisk can
Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
Fix FAT tables
Rebuild NTFS boot sector
Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
Fix MFT using MFT mirror
Locate ext2/ext3/ext4 Backup SuperBlock
Undelete files from FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystem
Copy files from deleted FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 partitions.
TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.
Operating systems
TestDisk can run under
DOS (either real or in a Windows 9x DOS-box),
Windows 10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP, Windows Server 2016/2012/2008/2003
Linux,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD,
SunOS and
MacOS X |
The second one i found pretty good was "Ontrack EasyRecovery".
--> https://www.ontrack.com/products/data-recovery-software/
hope that helps..
Aaaand i hope you get back your Files..

The best recovery software I've ever used is GetDataBack. Not free though and takes hours (if it's a fast SSD that isn't too large) and HOURS (if it's HDD at which point you should set it to run over night and the next day depending on the size). I rescued most of the stuff off of a dead SSD (I guess one of the static RAM chips died; I haven't tried the oven-resurrection trick yet to see if I can get every last bit saved since plenty of recordings from song-writing rehearsals and DAW-projects was lost. Here's to BACKING UP everything.)
