Just read that the "award" winning new Nvidia nforce4 chipset for Intel CPU's isn't such a great chipset after all. Seems like it can't run the D820 properly. Asus had the following statement on their website, wich has been removed:
Quote:
Yes, ASUS P5ND2-SLI Deluxe motherboard does [support Pentium D 820 processor], but the Intel Pentium D 820 processor works only in single-core mode due to chipset limitation.
And this is the quite hilarious statement from the nvidiots:
Quote:
We decided not to support the lowest performance 2.80 GHz dual-core at this point. We expect very limited demand in the enthusiast and gaming segment for this SKU and we decided not to spend engineering resources qualifying it for now… We support 3.0 GHz and above.
Nice try from nvidia, but i'll stick with Intel chipsets
haha.. the intel chipsets are improving a huge amount, but I would suggest looking into Nvidia in the future. Intels new take on "platforms" rather than "products" and Barrets move from CEO is seeing huge changes in the way the chipsets are being developed, I would expect to see a lot more chipsets pushing into media performance capability with good quality 7.1 sound but low end GFX support (no doubt relying on intels own GFX gear to drive the motherboards). Good news is, they will also start looking into the need for low heat, low power solutions..
Intel Chipsets improving? Intel Chipsets always have been the best on the market concerning stability, quality and compatibilty. I'm using Intel chipsets since the 430HX and i was never disappointed, the BX, 850 and 865 were all great chipsets. Our company uses them since i can think and they are much better in stability and compatible to all kinds of hardware.
totally agree, my point is that intel are taking a new direction with its chipsets. In the past it was all about making them work, making the stable, making them right. Not about making them perform for the job. Your machine will run well, but it would not beat a more mainstream mobo in a fight to the death !
I run an 865 at the moment, along with other things, and it runs like a dream! I love intel chipsets, but prepare for them to get better!
