Am I the only one that absolutely HATES app dependent devices that are useless without the app?
At work, we looked far and wide for temperature and humidity loggers that fit our need. We needed a device that could either be calibrated with ease, or could have its sensor replaced with ease. We found a device called the EL-MOTE-TH. It's a wifi based logger which sends all data online to a database. I'm not fond of that either since, once the database goes down, the devices are useless as well but this is a paid subscription so LASCAR has incentive to keep it up and running.
The problem is that the devices can ONLY be configured using an app. An app that is no longer in the app store. So I'm sitting here with 4 expensive devices (worth over €500) that I can't do jack shit with.
This thing has pissed me off for a long time. Friends of mine bought a system that was app based that controls the lights in their house. The app can't be installed on newer phones (it's an old app) so ... they had to replace the entire system. They paid a small fortune for it back in the day too!
And then there's stuff like electronic locks and doorbells using apps that suddenly disappear from the PLAY store due to "infractions" (read: breaking PLAY rules or abusing permissions). Great, another device for the trash can.
Seriously, the EU can bitch about pollution but apparently the manufacturing of devices that is bound to become useless at the drop of a hit is A-OK ? There really needs to become a law that has to offer a backup solution to prevent actual hardware having to be thrown out just because of software issues.

Agree completely, but you kind of walk into this shit by buying it in the first place. You know anything can happen in the futute and you device can become a worthless piece of junk. Im old fashioned in these things too.
there are plenty of failed kickstarters like 3d printers that were developed with an app in mind, the delivered hardware was a complete brick without the delivered apps ... now u even see 3000 usd telescopes that need an app lol that just have 150usd worth of lenses inside them with some cheap electrnics
anyone who mentions app as sales pitch, 50/50 its some snake oil cunt
can't you find the app installer, and install it as a 3-rd party app?
Sadly no. I tried googling for the APK but no luck. The website itself doesn't even mention you require the app. They MENTION the app but also mention a website showing a PC so I thought the app was just a bonus. It's pretty damn ridiculous because I bought it straight from the manufacturer so they should know their app is gone and they shouldn't sell it anymore.
A $400 juicer ... that needs an app to work ...... that needs custom "juice bags" that you can only buy from them ... which costs a fortune ... and basically just squeezes the juice out of the bag. What moron thought this was a good idea? And why did so many people back it?
