Alcon Entertainment secures rights to 1982 sci-fi classic
"Blade Runner," Ridley Scott's landmark sci-fier, is being reborn.
Alcon Entertainment announced Wednsday it's in final discussions to secure film, TV and ancillary franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to the 1982 thriller.
Alcon toppers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson told Variety they're in the early stages of sorting out how to proceed -- inlcuding whether Scott might be involved.
"We're at a very preliminary stage where we're still formulating strategy as to whether we'll hire a filmmaker or a writer first and whether we'll do a prequel or a sequel," Kosove said in response. "The one thing for sure is that neither Broderick or I will direct."
Alcon's negotiating to secure the rights from producer-director Bud Yorkin, who will serve as producer on "Blade Runner" along with Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will co-produce and Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, the CEOs of Thunderbird Films, will exec produce.
Alcon said its franchise rights would be all-inclusive but exclude rights to remake the original. However, it may produce projects based on situations introduced in the 1982 film, which starred Harrison Ford.
a gritty depressing sci-fi future film? why would anyone say no to this? as long as it features different characters (as in they dont recast Deckard), i can not see a problem with this.
yeah.. if for no other reason than because there is a huge lack of sci-fi movies these days, and i loved the grim noir'ish future in blade runner, i approve of this.
actually theyre talking about a sequel and a prequel, NOT a remake, NOT a reboot. thats why im totally fine with it... so i dont get the mild rage at this. no it doesnt NEED a sequel, but i dont see the harm in MAKING one... i loved the setting of the story as i said (a fucked up grim noir'ish bleak future), so continuing the story, or expanding or even making a new one in that sci-fi setting? again... WHY the rage? and IF ford is up for returning and they decide to continue with the deckard character, even better.
When was the last time Hollywood made a gritty scifi movie? It's all colorful and shit now. I doubt this will lead to anything good. The excessive use of CGI, which is inevitable in a scifi with a big budget these days, will not do this franchise any good.
eh ill give you that these days flash and eye candy is what sells movies, but what about everyones cinematic darling of 2010, inception? was that too bright, cheerful and cgi-happy for your tastes?
clearly i get your point, but i refuse to just automatically write-off every hollywood film i hear is in production, especially sci-fi ones given that its my fav genre. im going to atleast give it a chance to be good, instead of writing it off from the get-go.
i mean i wrote off inception too, and it surprised me in being really quite good...
additionally i look at films like pandorum that came out.. 2 years ago? and i realize that not all hope is lost for the sci-fi films i love.
wait, so you dont think inception qualifies as science fiction? yeah ok then just another one of the many daily examples of me disagreeing with other humpers i guess.. nothing new.
I agree with chiv, remake is better than nothing. Just don't try to compare it to the original and you might enjoy it.
Didn't work for me with Predators.
If they don't want it compared to the original, then put it in a different bloody universe. Period.
In most cases these "remakes" and "sequels" only try to surf in on the waves of success of the originals, and this won't be any different.
Hardly, still a huge name, and it will always remain that way. Just like Star Trek, Star Wars, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Alien, Predator, Terminator, Rocky..need I go on?
To be honest, I'm rather looking forward to some Bladerunner prequels and sequels.... cyberpunk is my absolute favourite genre EVER and I am so starved for it lately It's a dead genre that nobody seems to give a fuck about these days
don't we already have a pseudosequel, in the form of the total recall tv series?
it's officially in the total recall universe but it's clear what it really tries to be
lead cop even had a replicant sidekick
had some fun episodes in there, but the ending was beyond retarded
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
