|
 |
So this is why they met with Valve.
http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012/9/24/3383184/platinum-games-on-pc-steam-kickstarter-tgs
Quote: | Inaba told Polygon at Tokyo Game Show that making games for PC and releasing them through Valve's Steam service — and funding its own projects through Kickstarter — is something the developer is "very interested in."
Platinum does not currently have any PC games in development, Inaba explained, adding that the decision on which platforms the company's games are released is primarily up to their publishers.
"We haven't released anything on Steam yet, or any PC games for that matter, so I'm not in a position to encourage other people to do so," Inaba said. "However, I used to belong to a big publisher [Capcom]. And if you're at a big publisher, business gets carried on just seeing your game on console. Many publishers don't view PC as an important platform."
"It would be great if we could do a Kickstarter and gather enough money for a game to be released on Steam"
The Osaka-based developer currently has titles in the works for Wii U, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
"Console game development budgets are really big," he said, "so we need publishing partners to create those games. I was thinking — with our own money — about creating a PC title for Steam. It would give us the possibility to become a publisher, which is very attractive to me."
"If you think about the console market in Japan, and compare it to the world, it's not that big," Inaba said. "So I view the PC as an area with huge potential. It would be great if we could do a Kickstarter and gather enough money for a game to be released on Steam."
Inaba says he recently visited Valve when he attended PAX Prime in Seattle. He says Valve talked about its future goals, where the company was headed, and "things that we can't really talk about, unfortunately."
"We got the impression that they are a very open-minded company," he said. |
It's about time we get on the PC some proper (spiritual) sequels to some of the brilliant franchises the Japanese have created over the years.
And I'm really curious to know what has Valve talked them about, they can't reveal. Secret controller? Kickstarter-like funding on Steam? "Valve funds your games" initiative?
Thank you Platinum Games.
Thank you KickStarter.
Thank you Valve.
Peace.

Mad World, Bayonetta, Vanquish are their most famous.
As Clover Studio while working for Capcom they made Viewtiful Joe, Okami and God Hand.
Kamiya has directed Resident Evil 2 and worked on the original Resident Evil as well, and he also came up with the Devil May Cry series.
Many of the staff that worked on Resident Evil 4, made Vanquish.
They are currently working on Metal Gear Rising.

Yes, I've waited so long to be able to play Japanese (mostly JRPG) games on PC. Maybe my dream will come true in the next few years.

Would be nice if they succeeded but aren't these types of games fairly difficult to sell due to having a smaller market audience?
Still it would be nice if they managed to get Kickstarter funding for a PC project, Steam is a pretty good distribution platform as well.

do they own the rights to the games they made?, they can do a KS for a "Proper" PC port of Bayonetta or Vanquish i am sure money will be flowing as soon as they do that.

All I saw there was Steam Steam Steam..... good idea but the games they are used to making requires a lot of money as he says.
Considering big shots like Inxile and Obsidian are managing with 2-3 million, I don't know...

- Here's an extremely wild thought. After MGR finishes, Valve buys them or Platinum games becomes a partner/Valve China and they become PC exclusive developers.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

They don't. And I think it would be stupid to KickStart a PC port.
They should KickStart an original game. And no it doesn't have to be very expensive.
Eg Amnesia's budget was $360k. Not that Amnesia has much to do with the kind of games PG make, but it shows you how important good game design is. They could easily fund a $2-3M game, partly with their own money and partly with KickStarter.
You won't get the next Bayonetta, but you might get the next old school Resident Evil.

I really don't think it would be in their best interest doing that. They have a devoted console fanbase.
Also I don't see Valve buying them. Perhaps becoming partners.

Serously - I really dislike japanese games (well, most of them anyway) or asian games for that matter...but this is indeed good news for people who like them! |
I was referring to Japanese designed games in general, not just by PG.
Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Deadly Premonition, Metal Gear Solid, Snenmue, the recent D Souls games, there are many great Japanese developed games. They have talented designers just as the rest of the world does.

Japan is so out of touch with PC gaming, Kamiya thinks Steam is a cloud service or something

PlatinumGames would love to release all of its games to the PC, but that’s up to publishers
Quote: | These past few years, we’ve seen a lot of Japanese – as well as previously console-only – titles hitting the PC. And that’s because the PC market is currently huge and, let’s face it, most publishers and developers cannot simply ignore it. The same applies to the developer behind Bayonetta and Vanquish who told PCGamer that it would love to see all of its titles on our platform.
As a spokesperson for PlatinumGames told PCGamer:
“The PC market is huge and can definitely not be ignored. We are absolutely aware of that, and we’ve always felt this way. We’ve always had a positive stance towards porting our titles to PC, but the decisions as to which platforms we release our games on, and which platforms are the main focus for the games we make are largely made by the publishers, so this is not something we can decide on our own.”
Of course this does not surprise us at all. After all, we’ve seen images of Japanese developers testing their games on the PC platformlong before such versions were officially announced. Bayonetta and Metal Gears Solid V come immediately to mind, and we all know that Square Enix has already up and running an experimental PC version of Final Fantasy XV.
As the spokesperson for PlatinumGames concluded, if it was up to them, they would release all of their games to the PC. However, the publishers decide for which platforms their games will be released on.
“If it were up to us, we’d port all of our games to PC, but it all depends on the publishers.
We still feel strongly about putting more consideration into the PC market. If our current efforts prove successful, this will only make PC development more attractive.” |
