Kodansha and Production I.G announced on Friday that a new anime based on Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell manga has been green-lit. Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) are co-directing the anime. The format and release date have not yet been announced.
Kamiyama had teased in September that he wanted "to report" on new information about Ghost in the Shell "in the near future" in response to a fan inquiring about a possible third season of the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime series.
Since they say the "format" is unknown, does that mean it's unknown if it's a series or a film, or series of films? Theoretically it might even be SAC Season 3, no?
Now, let's hope the presence of the SAC dude will mean it will be better than the Arise disappointment.

Now titled Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 and targeting a 2020 release, it is all but confirmed to take place in the SAC universe.
SAC was taking place in 2030, and the second season ended in 2005.
Add another 15 years for the 2020 release of this, and it makes perfect sense the new one is taking place in 2045.
In Western markets Netflix will release it, and no, we still don't know if it's an OVA or series (I've seen a reference to it being a film, though: '"It is a next-generation animation film and the first "GHOST IN THE SHELL" made by double directors," Netflix touts in a statement.')

Just a small update (from August last year). It's going to be a series of 2 seasons, with season one being directed by one of the directors, and the other by the other dude.

This one doesn't light my fire. I watched quite a lot of SAC and it was fairly tedious. This looks like shit though compared to the style of the original SAC-series'.
In my two years of subscription I've watched many great things on Netflix
It would be best if they reduced the amount of shows they poop out, but it's the business model (MOREMOREMOREMORE). That's what investors want.
Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Ohtsuka, Kōichi Yamadera, Yutaka Nakano, Toru Ohkawa, Takashi Onozuka, Tarô Yamaguchi, and Sakiko Tamagawa all reprise their respective roles as Motoko Kusanagi, Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Saito, Paz, Borma, and the Tachikoma from previous anime installments in the franchise (only Ghost in the Shell Arise had different cast members voicing the characters). Osamu Saka returns from the various Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime as Daisuke Aramaki.
