I currently have 6 drives in my PC and another one connected via USB 3:

2x 1TB SSD
2x 6TB WD Black
2x 3TB WD Blue (before green was renamed to blue)
1x 6TB external Seagate

In total I have 26TB of space of which 2TB is meant for games & software, the rest for storage or media files. Now, I have NO redundancy, no RAID, no nothing so you can imagine I'm not very happy with this system.

The problem is that I fear using NAS over ethernet will seriously impact read/write performance. So I come here and ask:

What would be a good solution that is also not overly expensive that gives me 12TB of space with redudency of at least one drive and preferably 2 (RAID 6?) without severely impacting the speed (4 drive minimum obviously). 50MB/sec read speed I consider a minimum.

red, when is the last time u accessed all those drives, why reduce their life cycle by booting them up everytime u start the computer ?

just unplug and plug in when u really need acces ? , are your bluray rips that important to have redundant storage ? Razz

noone of my drives ( 8 160-320gig drives ) sitting on my shelves behind me from 2000-2005 failed sofar , they get booted up once a year maybe when the internet fails or im really bored and honestly noone of the data on them is important to be as i can find anything instantly on free streaming sites, just not 4k full hd quality

im to lazy to put them all onto one 4 tb drive lol

I've thought of a much cheaper solution: I see prices have dropped quite a bit on hard drives lately and you can have a 12TB drive for a mere €210 on Amazon.

If I shuffle some data around, set Dropbox to Online only and move some more stuff to my 2TB pCloud account (+ clean up a bit) I can easily cut down all my data to 12TB + not all my stuff is a "must-be-backed up" case.

Maybe you already thought of this but think about a backup at the same time. I personally use a small external 2TB drive attached to the NAS just as a daily backup of my personal files/personal cloud and pictures. In case you go on vacation for a longer period, you can just remove the drive and put it somewhere safe. You never know. If the NAS gets damaged from whatever may happen you still have a copy of your most important stuff.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

There are also DAS (direct-attached storage) devices. Those connect using much faster IO, while sometimes allowing similar capabilities as NAS devices. Consider those too.

For NAS, using 4x10TB, you will get ~26.2TB of accessible redundant storage. So if this is enough for you, get a 4 bay DAS/NAS device. Otherwise, look at 8 bays devices. Higher-end NAS devices have PCIe expansion slots, so you can add a 10GBe network adapter. If you upgrade your hardware later (your router and PC network adapter), you will benefit from much faster data access.

No need to do so either, hell I bought a second hand Qnap NAS for 50€. While I can't do the fancy stuffs with it... (docker, virtual machine,... kinda things) it does the storage, streaming just fine. Hell, I sometimes even use it as a seedbox if I need some ratio boosting. Still gets updates every few months as well. Qnap is really great on supporting their devices for a long period of time.

Also comes with all the tools for backups linking cloud servers and what not.

They make great NAS devices, and cheap as chips too. I'd get the 4Gb version though. Mine shares media & files to all devices in house, tablets, TV's, laptops, workshop station etc. Runs 24/7 without error Smile I use another Pi 4 as a Pi-hole, and another for projects. Great little devices.
