Sad Sad Sad times are upon us usenet users, schemes great tool "GrabIt" has gone comercial: http://www.shemes.com/ . This meaning that the wonderful and very helpful search function is now disabled for none paying customers, use freeloaders will have to find our files from the annoying hard slog of updating groups and crawling through each post, it is indeed a sad sad day for usenet Sad!

GrabIt 1.5.3 ßeta released, with commercial features - 22/05/2005 Top
About three weeks ago I made an announcement about making the Search Engine a commercial feature and providing a good stable Usenet service. Today is the day it is going to happen. GrabIt 1.5.3 ßeta is ready and is the first release with a commercial feature that is provided by me. It is still possible to use the search for a limited amount of searches each day, but to use the search more often a Shemes.com account is needed.

Without a Shemes.com account you will have the following limitations:

* Only 4 GrabIt Search actions per 24 hours. This gives you the following possibilities:
1 Search request and 3 Grab requests each day;
2 Search requests and 2 Grab requests each day;
3 Search requests and 1 Grab request each day;
4 Search requests and 0 Grab requests each day;
* Only 500 results will be returned for each search

Registered users will get unlimited GrabIt Search actions and a maximum of 5000 search results per search request.

Other changes in 1.5.3 are:

* GrabIt no longer selects a group to download using a message-id;
* Added a confirmation pop-up between hitting the 'clear history' button and actually clearing the history;
* Removed the double dot in the Incomplete Grab extension;
* Subscribed groups appear bold in the All Groups list;
* GrabIt Search information messages are now displayed in a pop-up instead of the search results;
* While pausing due to lack of disk space, GrabIt now automatically resumes downloading when enough disk space becomes available;
* Fixed the 'Error while downloading article' problem that is also known as the 'gobbledygook bug' in the GrabIt community;
* It is now possible to toggle if '(Incomplete Grab)' should be added to incomplete files (enabled by default);
* Individual parts from an Incomplete Grab will not longer be removed so the binary can be completed using another server.

If only there where other tools?

hahaha, Ill take a look later Smile!

As for NZB leecher, I haven't tried it, but I have heard and read about it, I will certainly give it a try.

This is about more than just "sYn not being able to warez quite as easily" when a once freeware product cuts off its users and begins to charge for services it once provided for free, its going to cause a big ripple. I can of course understand why the service is now a "pay to use" thing, it must have cost a huge amount to keep the search function public for as long as it was, and in all fairness, the price is not so high, infact I will no doubt pay it Razz! Makes you wonder where other "freeware" products will end up if they get popular, DivX is another for example..

What is the internet for if you cant find free, useful and well made applications for free? (none warezed Razz)..

Information superhighway my ass Razz

I use newsleecher and find it the best,
GrabIt search function in my mind as never been that good,
Its slow at updating and lists afew groups that I cannot download from.

I allways update my headers with newsleecher every day and i find it only takes a few mins to update all the groups.. And the super search function for newsleecher is far far better then any other I have seen.. Thats when you find a working key for it Razz

Ive been using GrabIt for years and love its simple interface.
When the search first appeared I thought we would be paying for it sooner or later.
Ive got an account because I find the search usefull however its still got bugs sometimes returns unaccurate results.
It searches shemes server which has many incomplete articles even NTL's free servers are better for completion of articles in the groups that they do carry.
