Ok, so further to my mini-conversation with AnimalMother earlier, I decided to check out what was still being done in the "Thief" scene - and came across something I *started* following a couple years back, but kinda gave it up for lost after a while --- well now it seems like it's almost here!
Info:
THE DARK MOD is a total conversion for Doom 3, turning it into a dark and moody stealth game inspired by the Thief series by Looking Glass Studios. We have a talented development team of about 15 regulars, including concept artists, modelers, texture artists and programmers. Our plan is to completely revamp the gameplay, AI, graphics, HUD and weapon set to fit our best view of a gothic steampunk universe as conceived by fans of the Thief genre. Our project has two main stages: first, to release a complete series of tools allowing fans to make their own stealth missions, and second, to create a unique campaign using those tools.

Progress continues towards getting TDM ready for a 2009 beta release. Fidcal has been working to set up movable/droppable objects so that the noise alerts AI; while you can quietly set things down, if you drop a vase on a stone floor AI will certainly notice.
Angua has implemented blood decals that alert AI and can be washed away with water arrows. Ishtvan continues to fine tune combat and has also added the ability to "moss" glass with moss arrows so that it can be broken quietly.
We also had an internal map contest, to see what mappers could produce in about a month. The result has been four or five very cool little missions, including a very Thiefy sequel to 'Thief's Den' by Fidcal. These missions (plus a few others, hopefully) will provide players with lots of stealth fun when the mod is released. Flanders has also been working on a beautiful training map, where players can learn all the new features TDM offers.
There are a few new screenshots of various maps for you to see on the screenshots page. As well, we have a new video. It is an example from a map in progress, by Mortem Desino, that demonstrates a few TDM features in action, including a (strange) example of custom conversations.

be warned; it's a chunky download! My updater has been running for ages now, averaging a measly 250-350KB/s. 1GB DLed so far and still going.
=Update=
1.4GB, finished.
=2nd Update=
Well that was a fat waste of time. Game loads, I install a mission, go to play; game hangs on the loading screen. After about 2 minutes, I see the Windows mouse cursor and a box appears saying that the game has crashed >_> I checked details and it reports atioglxx.dll has crashed, blegh.
... oh and before the nVidia buttfucks jump in and blame ATi; Don't. This has nothing to do with ATi as Doom3/RoE/CDoom and pretty much any other mod I have installed *for* Doom 3 -- all work perfectly, flawlessly. It's just TDM that crashes.
Open Doom 3 and hit Ctrl+Alt+~ (tilde, ^ on German keyboards) to open the console. You'll see the version printed in the lower left corner of the console. It should read 1.3.1.1304. If your version is ending on 1302, you've got the wrong patch installed.
If you have the correct version, then I've no idea what's going on... Tho I'm not seeing any bitching about the beta crashing on the TDM forums so it should be working ok.
I can't get it to run i've downloaded the latest patch for doom 3 1.3.1.1304 when i run tdmluncher the screen on my mointer just flickers for no more than a second i've tried running it in compatibility mode in Windows 7 still won't do anything. Can anyone think of something that might help? Thanks

I can start the training mission just fine and it does enter the game - still trying to set the graphics properly tho. It won't change from the default 1024x768 resolution for some reason (and if I put Bloom on, it turns the game upside down ).
Got the game to work now on Windows 7-x64 first download must have been corrupted
sabin1981 have you tried copying and replacing your Doom 3 DoomConfig.cfg file in the darkmod folder this file is getting corrupted on the first run of the game for some reason on some systems this might be your problem.
Thanks inz for your help

Nope, tried that - I just get a black screen on load, no graphics at all, though the game is still loaded. I checked again on my other Doom 3 stuff and yup... all work fine. It's just this mod
Got it working properly now - had to start and restart a few times for the resolution to stick. Also disabling Catalyst AI fixed the bloom and skybox issues for me.
Sneaking, object manipulation and picking the locks is well done. Melee combat is terribad and archery is a bit difficult since there's no crosshair or any other form of aiming help, and the arrows don't quite fly where it feels they should (rope arrows are sexy tho).
And from what I could tell in the tutorial level, you have to hit torches directly - no more splash effect to snuff them out.
Flash bombs also work for like a second now, that was kinda meh.
Overall very promising tho, the issues with the combat aren't a major downer for me since I prefer ghosting the levels if at all possible... Downloading the real missions from the site now.
