I've wanted to rebuild my December 1997 pc for some time now. The only thing left from it (found in grandparents house) are seagate 1,7gb hdd and yamaha opl3-sa3 sound card... But I was lucky enough to got my hands on 5 computers with very old hardware. Completely free. Coworker even gave me 17" crt which I gamed on for the whole january this year. 120hz 1024x768 return to castle wolfenstain and Max Payne 2 are a sight to behold.
Spoiler: | |
The computers come from old office. I think it was some auto shop or something like that. Been in storage for years. Last file dates range to 2014 so waaaay to long to use windows 98 machine. One of those even had windows 95 installed. Here is what I've got:
From left to right:
-Socket 7, AMD K6 233mhz, S3 virge 2mb, Some weird addonics sound card which is just yamaha opl3-saX it seems. Maxtor 4gb hdd, 64mb ram.
Could not get it to post and the case would not close. The side panels were not from this case. threw away the case and left everything else. Used ram in one of other computers.
-Toshiba 3100m - 8gb seagate, Celeron 500, intel i810 integrated gpu.
Pc from around may 1999... surprisingly, integrated gpu works great in 2d and decently in 3d mode, integrated audio is fine... It just works. Without anything in it. I am really surprised. It's a simple, complete pc for playing 1997/8 games. Even nfs3 works.
-Socket 7 pentium mx200. Turned out, this is almost exactly like what I had ! I've put that 2mb s3 virge in it, my old yamaha opl3 sound card and it works! It just had 2gb seagate with win95 in it.
It's oldest of them all but also most true to what I had. 32mb of ram but I expanded with 64 from that other pc.
-The black thing is a noname. No psu, sata 80gb hdd... had only 1 good thing in it which is surprisingly S3 Elephand 4mb. With all the chips filled !!! I might put it in that pentium 200 pc above.
-Lastly, the great looking and working desktop IBM 300pl. Socketed cartridge pentium II 350mhz, 40gb maxtor drive and integrated aureal audio and trio3d graphics.
The only computer out of all of these above which does not darken the picture which is apparently known s3 bug. I really like the look of this one. It's also quietest, has a fan that only turns on when it needs too and is very fun to work with. has all the pci and isa slots too if I don't want to use integrated stuff. It is probably my fav. Just some weird stuttering and speeding up in quake1.
So it makes 3 complete computers with either integrated or s3 virge graphics, yamaha or integrated sound cards, at most, 2000-2001 cd-roms and hdds.
After cleaning and restoring (without retrobright yet), These look like that.
Pic of cleaned stuff. It's so hot right now and this takes so much room and handling around, that I have to put it down to the cellar (it's on 0 floor and I am on 3rd-last).
I will get back to it when I will have some time and maybe it's winter. Anyway - I now have 3 retro computers anmd plenty of spare parts and I wanted just one 1998 pc

I had a bit of a Nostalgia delirium today as well.
Auction site had an Atari 1040STE up. First computer we owned in our house. Decent price, so felt like buying it but eventually realism kicked in. Since I can't say I have the finances to indulge myself in just a nostalgia buy.
I did get rid of all my old stuff and some of my console collection when moving to Sweden (Yeah, it still hurts a bit).
But this year I had some old stuff 'donated'. My wife's dad was cleaning out the garage and asked if I wanted any of the old PC's from her brothers. Also came with a PS1 and a load of games.
Some restoring projects for the future.
Any who, enjoy KC. It's always fun diddling around with old stuff. I'd advise going for a Voodoo 2 instead of 1 though. Availability is higher so price is less as well.

I too regret getting rid of my old PCs, but the lack of space at the time coupled with the different mentality made it seem like it was the right thing to do. I still have a few video cards left (not the Voodoo 2 sadly, I sold that one), as well as a glorious Samsung Syncmaster 550s that still works fine despite having gone through hell xD
