Used to play it when it was the only f2p game out there. Everything was 2d sprites (except for the game world itself), everything was very simple, etc. Stopped around the time the first area addition was introduced and started doing the premium memberships.

Best MMO ever. Played it quite a lot back in a day. A coworker that I showed it to five years ago, still chops wood daily in the free world.

I thought the appeal of Runescape is that any shitty PC could run it. Many people with PC's capable of playing this new engine have probably moved on to better games.

I never saw the appeal of it, I always thought it was big with the kids because they couldn't afford the subscription games at that time. Their target audience was probably ten years younger than I am.
The new engine is nice for the nostalgia people and the ones that stuck around I guess. Bit like the new AO engine.

Just started this again, after maybe 12 years. I think I played it back in grade school. Actually not a bad game, if you're into isometric RPGs with semi turn based combat.
It's still grindy but there are a lot more ways to go about with leveling now, and figuring out various tactics and how to meta-game is a big part of the enjoyment. A bunch of new skills were added and old ones improved, as well as tons of other features. The game looks good with the new engine, and the art style is really good (the wizards tower especially looks sweet). I like the quests especially, they all feel unique and had work put into them, not just fetch quests, but usually have separate areas, fully voiced characters, custom animations, puzzles, etc. New Dungeoneering skill is pretty fun too, plays like a dungeon crawler game where you start with nothing and need to find/craft equipment to progress through the floors of the dungeon, which is pretty great on its own. I've barely scratched the surface, they certainly added a lot of stuff in the last 15 years.
And this is all based on the free version of the game. Members get 4x the world size and other skills and features, which I haven't even gotten into.
Anyway, having a lot of fun so far. Check it out, it's like a 5MB download.
