PostPosted: Wed, 10th Sep 2014 05:58    Post subject: Time for a Change
I didn't think I would be upgrading PCs as I haven't really taken gaming seriously for a while. After starting my new job this February, I starting acquiring new interests. I did game once in a while but not like I used to back in the day.

I didn't think I would be coming back to gaming after playing that pile of shit Watch Dogs...The biggest disappointment for me. However after E3 and seeing some titles that are planned for release later this year and early next year, I am excited again Smile

I have been using my X58 system since summer 2010. It has served me well but times have changed and the time has come for me to do a completely new build and retire this one. My original plan was just to upgrade mobo, cpu and RAM to X99. But after careful thinking I said fuck it lets go all out!

My final X58 specs:
Motherboard: ASUS Rampage III Black Edition [SOLD]
CPU: Core i7 930 overclocked and running 24/7 at 4.44ghz [SOLD]
RAM: 6GB Corsair Dominator GT 1600 C7 (CMG6GX3M3A1600C7) [SOLD]
GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 780 Hydro Copper [SOLD]
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Recon3d PCIe
Primary HDD: 120GB Corsair Neutron GTX SSD [SOLD]
Secondary HDD: 750GB WD Caviar Black
Power Supply: Corsair HX1050
Case: Corsair 800D
Monitor: Samsung 2233rz 1680x1050 120hz

For the X99 build I want the build to accommodate my gaming until 2018-2019 preferably so lets not go the full budget route

Im currently eyeballing the following parts:
Motherboard: ASUS Rampage V Extreme
CPU: Core i7 5930k
RAM: 16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 (havent decided on which speed and timing)
GPU: [not sure but would love to hear thoughts]
GPU 2: maybe?
Sound: [not sure but would love to hear thoughts]
Primary HDD: [not sure but would love to hear thoughts]
Secondary HDD: 750GB WD Caviar Black
Power Supply: [not sure but would love to hear thoughts]
Case: Corsair 800D
Monitor: Most likely ASUS ROG Swift 27" 144hz 2560x1440 but Im willing to shop around. 120hz or more is an absolute must and Id like to have 2560x1440 res

Again, this build has to last me until 2018 (except for the GPU). I am planning to move into my own place sometime this coming year so I need something to keep me warm on those lonely nights when my lady isnt with me Very Happy Let me hear your input!

PS. I got the cooling covered. Im keeping the same watercooling parts. Except for maybe the pump, the MCP655 is too big.

For the monitor:

http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2558136#2558136 (which in turn links back to http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2556951#2556951).

And if you want something that actually looks good but don't want to wait:
http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=95675&highlight=

This beats the living shit out of that ASUS TN piece of crap, and yet no one drools over it because it doesn't have G-Sync lol wut lol wut

Apparently actually being able to see some colours and having some contrast on your screen isn't as cool as being able to display 118 FPS properly.

Yes, I'm exaggerating, but it's still amazing how people went "HUEHUEHUEHUE TOO EXPENSIVE" about the Eizo but think the $800 for a TN panel is perfectly justified. Retards.

Primary drive: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB (it's more costly than others but it's crazy fast, 10 year warranty and Samsung ssds are super reliable).

GPU: wait for GTX 980 to come out in 10 days and see how it compares.

Sound: nothing wrong with onboard sound nowadays, especially on rampage V extreme with SupremeFX 2014 which is probably the best onboard sound. asus claims it's as good as some of their dedicated sound cards.

PSU: 800-1000W platinum rated from good brand. i prefer corsair.

AXi series for PSU, or if you're sticking with just one card, the current HX should suffice. I'd wait a few more days for the 9XX series from NVIDIA to be announced. I'd also look into an R9295x2, for the lulz, heard they're getting some price cuts, in the US at least.

I also second what rgb said about Samsung 850 series, tho I did not get my hands on any 850 series SSD for now.

I might wait on the monitor and see what else is out. The monitor will be the last thing I purchase so I have some time.

I will check out Samsung SSDs. I think I will sell my GTX 780 now if thats the case with 980. What happened to GTX 880? Confused

SupremeFX sucks balls. I had it on my Rampage III. Its garbage compared to my SB Recon3d. I dont think Il be going from a SB sound card to onboard.

I currently have a Corsair HX1050 gold rated. If I go with a new power supply Id want HXi or an AXi

Take a SSD drive for os and with enough space for some demanding games.

as second choice upgrade the 750 GB Caviar Black to a 2 TB Caviar Black, shouldn't be much more expensive and you won't regret it.

Integrated sound is really fine, I have a similar MB.

GPU, as said, wait some days... GPU2, naaaa i don't recommend it... better have one good. (its expensive to have 2 and performance is better, but not that better...

as for monitor, no less than 27 - 28 inches... Razz

If you are really going for 1440p 144hz monitor, even 2 GPU´s arent going to cut it, you are going to need like 3 cards.

Yea thats how I have been using my SSD. I have OS and a few core programs I use installed on it and maybe 1 game. The rest of the games I keep on my WD caviar.

My Ultrabook has a Samsung SSD and it definitely blows my PC's Corsair one out of the water.

Corsair Neutron SSD from my PC:

Samsung SSD from my laptop:

Ps. what happened to GTX 880? Why 980 and not 880?

Technically, it's still only speculation that it'll be the 980 Wink

But yes, same reason as with the 300 series. They've already rebranded a load of shit to 800 for mobile, so they'd have to name the next series 900 on that and they want to keep it the same on desktop, so they just skip it.

I finally sold the GTX 780 HC as well as the Corsair SSD. I may possibly keep my sound card. Ive been using my Audio-Technica headphones with my ultrabook the past 2 weeks for music, the sound quality comes nowhere near my SB sound card. The SB card made everything sound like studio quality, the clarity and especially the bass were phenomenal.

I know everybody here is saying onboard sound has come a long way but after listening to my SB card the last few months, Im not willing to downgrade to save a few extra dollars when Im going to be dropping thousands on this PC anyways

And Im going to wait a little to see all the reviews of the 980. From the few Ive seen already it seems like its about the same performance as a 780Ti Confused

@dr-nix : I want to stay away from PICe based SSds like revodrive. I only want my GPU and soundcard using my PCIe. There was a time I was interested in revodrives but I want to have the option to add additional cards in the future. Im checking out the Samsung 850 like rgb#000 mentioned

Fair enough. The Samsung 850 Pro sounds like a good alternative.

Some pics I found of the final state of my previous build from a few weeks ago:

And my build at the moment:
Laughing

Anyways I placed an order on a bunch of parts last week from Newegg:

^This stuff^ will be arriving sometime this coming week. I had to purchase a CPU cooler as you can see. I like to do testing before I put together my watercooling loop in the event that something turns out faulty. Also I went with the Samsung 850. After somebody mentioned it here, I looked it up and it looks like a very nice drive.

I picked up the processor from Microcenter last night:

This i7 5930k was $499+tax which came out to $544 which is still cheaper than any other place online. Intel processors seem to be cheapest at Microcenter around here. I purchased my i7 930 from this place back in 2010. The salesman at Microcenter was annoying last night though. I asked for the processor and the guy is trying to sell me a motherboard. When I made it clear that I already have a motherboard coming in the mail, this guy goes "you should have got it from here as a combo it would have been cheaper." Umm no theres a sales tax on everything at Microcenter. I was about to tell this guy to stfu but I was with my gf and decided its just not worth arguing over something pointless. Lately I get annoyed very easily when Im at a place to buy something specific and salespeople try and sell you something else. Maybe Im turning old and grumpy Laughing

I came home and did some research and It would definitely would NOT have been cheaper. Places like Microcenter and Amazon charge me a sales tax. Sales tax is no joke when it comes to expensive items. So something that is $499, comes out to $544 with the tax whereas in Newegg there is no tax. Anyways enough about this Microcenter salesman rant Laughing

I decided to stick to my old power supply for now, which is a Corsair HX1050 (80plus silver version). Also Im sticking to my sound card as well. Ive been using my headphones on my laptop the past few weeks and its just not the same as having a sound card.

I also purchased a few watercooling stuff but they are small miscellaneous things which will make more sense once I complete the build and post final pics. So stay tuned Smile

Call it €560 with shipping; that's €462.81 without VAT, which in turn already is $586.59 (the €560 is $709.77). Stop whining, bitch Laughing

Thanks! So the Newegg package has arrived a few days ago!

They made one fancy looking RAM kit Laughing

For GPU I decided to go with Geforce 9600 GSO. It should be able to handle any modern day game. And the cooler for the CPU I decided to go with Evercool 2011 stock cooler:

So the purpose of the stock cooler is that I like to test my components on air first before I assemble my watercooling loop as I mentioned above. The GPU is probably temporary as well Very Happy

Im coming for an X58 build so Im new to a lot of things here on X99. It seems like a lot has changed and I was a bit overwhelmed and confused by the BIOS settings. First off, a mouse cursor in BIOS? It feels a bit odd, I prefer old fashioned keyboard navigation. The CPU strap is something I have never seen or heard of until now but Im still learning. The BCLK seems to also work differently as well here. The system wont POST until I put BCLK to at least 125 if Im trying to run RAM above 2666mhz.

Im still learning the BIOS, its probably going to take a while. Im also waiting for GPUs to come in stock before I actually put this thing together. After that I will begin to actually overclock. But until then, here are some pics of my setup at the moment! Smile

That "OC panel" thing is good for monitoring temps. I wouldn't actually overclock with it. Once I actually complete this build, I will post some benchies Very Happy

What the hell? Why did you buy a 9600GSO piece of crap on that fine-ass rig? A 9600 won't be anywhere even remotely enough for modern gaming.. it's weaker than the 8800GT, which is SEVEN years old.

I am mightily confused here TC.

Hehe I was just kidding mate Very Happy

Ive had this 9600 GSO lying around my home for years. Because I tend to have watercooled GPUs, I use this one as a traditional air cooled GPU for when things go wrong or when Im just testing new components
