Well it went through so many development iterations hahah (not unlike DNF). Doubt it though. What was the last "modern" game, other than DNF, that you heard or expect to be in development for 5-10 years? Nowadays it's all about spewing franchises and sequels and prequels and reboots and spin-offs and DLC as fast possible so the consoles throw cash.

Heh, true, and the fact that we are somewhat hyped for it speaks volumes, doesn't it?

As much as I piss and moan about long development times, it's really only BECAUSE I want the game. The yearly reboot bullshit like EA sports and the CoD series are just fleeting things, it's the games that the developers really take the time to create ... those are the ones I often want the most.

From 2006: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/152092/interviews/looking-back-prey/
Quote: | Rhinehart: We're discussing a lot of cool new ideas for Prey 2, but we can't really talk about them. There's the simple dynamic stuff, developing the Portal system and the improving the way the alien AI uses the portals. Plus, there's already a mod out there that gives you a portal wrench, just the same as in Portal. We don't want to give away some of the cooler new stuff at this stage. We have some ideas that are way beyond how far we went in the first game that we want to explore pretty extensively - we'll definitely be taking things in a different direction next time. |
And 2008: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/860/860110p1.html
Quote: | Miller: Absolutely! While Prey pioneered the portal concept, Valve's Portal took it to an all-new level. It really shows what you can do when you focus on a single core cool gameplay concept. So, while Portal impressed the heck out of us, it has also inspired us to return the favor to Valve and hopefully leap frog them as they did us. We believe we have new ideas for portals that will keep the portal race interesting. |
Quote: | Miller: In the original Prey, the lead character, Tommy, was too reluctant, and didn't realize his hero status until late in the game. So, in the new game we're making him a hardened, take-charge character who's learned fast from his previous experience, and ready to accept his status as a galactic savior. We're definitely beefing up the combat—expect more enemies onscreen simultaneously versus 3-4 in the original—as well as the spirit powers. And while the original was too much of a corridor shooter, Prey 2 will have much more variety and wide-open areas: think CoD4 to get a good idea of what we're shooting for in terms of open-world look and feel. |

So it will have almost nothing to do with the previous game...well it's definitely too early to jump conclusions though, let's wait for some concrete infos

Fuck yeah! Derp of War: Prey Edition!
Portals will now only open in scripted sequences or only when the obligatory "go here, follow me, do that so the console retards don't lose focus" team-mate tells you to click a button.

Also, the game is very, VERY different than what you think it is. I'll be curious to hear your reactions when you read our feature story. |

I don't understand how it suddenly is 1000 times more important to make 5000 billion dollars/euro whatever on a title where it didn't seem like it was that important 10 +/- years ago.

That's because there are very few "independent" developers these days. It's just fucking corporations now.
Also, there are many millions more retards willing to pay for these shits these days.

That's correct but let's not forget how much expensive games are today. In 1999 you could develop System Shock 2 for $1.7M only, and in 2009, 10 years later, with $1.7M what you get is Darkest of Days.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/4201/postmortem_8monkeys_darkest_of_.php?page=4
Budgets have been increased, prices have remained the same ($50), how else are you going to be as profitable as before unless you sell more copies?

Well of course, nowadays if you don't have bloooooooom graphics, the console tardos will not buy the games.
I also like good graphics, but if a small studio does something interesting, I'm all for them.

Get more/better employees -> have better level design?
